Basketball Reality

Just look at the fact guys.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Clemson_Tigers_men's_basketball_seasons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Coast_Conference_men's_basketball
*Clemson is .500 all time *Clemson is .373 in conference play (aka DEAD LAST)
Our Conference
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_teams_with_the_most_victories_in_NCAA_Division_I_men's_college_basketball http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/leaders/wins-coach-career.html
*the ACC has 5 of the top 11 ALL TIME winningest programs (remember this is a list of Division 1, not just power 5) *the ACC has 5 of the top 12 ALL TIME winningest coaches. All of which are STILL COACHING. *In over 100 years of basketball Clemson only has 201 more wins than Coach K
Let that soak in.
Coach K (#1 coach) from Duke (#4 school) only beat us by 7 today. In reality 7 points isn't a bad loss. So who is Clemson going to hire that will allow the worst basketball team in the conference to beat the best coach of all time at the 4th best basketball school of all time? Seriously who?
Brad may have a worse overall record than OP but OOC scheduling is a crap shoot. IMO ACC production is a much better measuring stick because it is almost always the best of the best. Believe it or not Brad (.459) has out performed OP (.446) despite the conference being ever stronger than it was when OP was here. Remember historically Clemson is a miserable .373.
Basically what I'm saying is lets see how these new facilities pay off for Brad who just had his best recruiting class ever before we go spending $3M we could use to expand our football trophy case or gold plate that slide in a few years.

Mediocrity should never be accepted at Clemson. I'm sick of these weak fans. Brownell is a loser.

Actually, the conference just has more teams.
The Duke the OP teams faced was much more fierce than the one you saw today. GT went to a National Championship, Duke won a National Championship, and UNC won two National Championships while OP was at Clemson. Also, when OP was hired Maryland had just won a National Championship and Duke the year before. Those teams were loaded with talent and not skinny freshman.
Duke has one National Championship and UNC one, with UNC also playing in another National Championship during the Brownell Era.
Another thing to note is: Purnell's teams had to play the elite teams twice a year.

Again, we don't play those teams twice a year, as well as others, and U of L and 'Cuse have not been what they were before entering the conference.
Wake had Skip Prosser and had been on top with the momentum from teams with Childers and Tim Duncan.

The % of ACC teams that made the NCAA Tournament actually went down when those teams were added.
Why do you think that was?

Basketball Reality - We Stink
Mar 8, 2017, 10:31 PM
[ in reply to Re: Basketball Reality ] |

The reality is that we stink. We always have. As long as we continue to do things the way we have we will continue to get the same result and will continue to stink. Personally I think BB is a fine man and is doing his best. But that is just not going to be enough. The situation is never going to change unless it is changed with a revolution. I cannot stomach that we cannot be successful in basketball here. It is extremely frustrating to see us get close to breaking thru over the years but always find a way to stink it up or mess it up. Tates Locke, probation. Bill Foster, elite 8, but then cannot recruit and keep up with the Joneses at UNC and NC St. Cliff Ellis, up one year down the next. Gets a chance to break thru in 1990 and blows it. Rick Barnes gets close then flees to greener pasture. OP gets us to NCAA 3 times but cannot sustain things. Something has to change drastically and in a big way if it is ever going to be different here. What happens if we go 19-10 next year and still don't make the NCAA? Will it be any easier to get a top notch coach who can and will win then as opposed to this year? I don't think so. I am afraid we are just kicking the can down the road. I think the fan base really does want a consistent winner in basketball, contrary to popular belief. Bringing in a Saban-type coach has never been done here, in any sport. But I am afraid that is what it is going to take to ever get much better than what we are. Players play for the coach primarily. We seem to have players who try hard and are nice guys and good citizens but they are just not the caliber of the guys we need to beat the teams we need to beat on a regular basis to make any real noise in the conference. Maybe we just need to go join the SEC.

I would absolutely take that every year and be happy. That puts us in the NCAAT every year and in some top 25 polls.

Besides beating South Carolina without their best player, not just best player but really their team, name me the Top 25 teams we beat this year.
Remember we beat 3 in a row last year and 4 of 5, and also beat Syracuse @ Syracuse, who made the Final Four, the game before that stretch; before imploding down the stretch.

I agree. Basketball is my second favorite sport but I would absolutely axe the program if it gave us a step up in football. And 99% of Tigers would say the same.
Winning in basketball at this current stage without the rich basketball history or fertile recruiting territory is going to take a lot of luck. No matter who we bring in, we are going to have to get really lucky a couple times. Get a couple of players that turn into superstars, have a couple of buzzer beaters go our way, etc.... You get some momentum like this and it can build on itself. This team just turned out to be unlucky this year and it happens.
I do hope we can become respectable at basketball but I'm not going to be delusional and think that we can be a blueblood.

We won't be good in basketball because the administration doesn't take the sport as serious as football or baseball. If they did, Brownell would have been gone.

You are delusional and flat out wrong. You can't just magically get better at a sport overnight. Even if we fired BB, there's a good chance that the next coach can't get it done here.

Geez - having been in business for 40+ years, I have seen countless people fired for their inability to do their job well. And guess what - they weren't paid millions to do a lousy job, and did not have a golden parachute of several millions in case their boss finally got fed up with their mediocre performance. I have NO SYMPATHY for someone that IMO is basically stealing from CLEMSON and abusing the fan base. If you do, then we will just agree to disagree. Whatever you do in life, do NOT try to run a business or work in a professional environment. You will be devoured.
That said - I guess it's easy to have perceptions of what is best when it is someone else' money that is paying the bill. I choose NOT to do that. Try to imagine that it is YOUR money that is paying his salary.

What's your sport of choice?
Dale Earnhardt isn't going to win a single race if he's driving a Mazda Protege. Chris Petersen finally realized he was never taking Boise State to a national championship. Coack K went 73-59 in 5 years with Army. Year 3 was his only tournament birth, NIT first round exit. He was the NCAA runner up with Duke 6 years later. So did Coach K just magically become the best coach in the NCAA in that 6 years or did Army hold him back?

Look at these facts. Forget beating Duke,or UNC for now. When you can beat Ga.Tech,Miami,Va.Tech,Syracuse,and Florida St.,then get back to me. That's reality.
