Basketball Practice

Aug 25, 2016, 6:38 PM

For anyone that has Snapchat, the men's basketball team has an Account that posts a lot of cool practice videos.

They were back in the new arena today.

JB is getting lots of time as a wing, as I've seen tons of stuff of him working with Grantham.

Another cool thing was a video of Legend throwing and catching frisbees over and over again to work on his hands and improve in that aspect.

I think the highlight so far has been the 1-on-1 drills shown in the video, and the competition between the guys. Shelton Mitchell vs. Avry Holmes is a seriously intense battle, along with JB going up against Donte. Donte has been very physical and using his length to bother JB some. But JB is also relentless.

One note about the 1-on-1 drills: this says to me that Coach Brownell realizes we need as many playmakers as possible. They've had several videos showing them doing this a lot, so I like the emphasis being out there so we have more guys prepared to go make a play when needed in a game.

Cletiger10, what do you expect out of this season?

Aug 25, 2016, 7:01 PM

I have trained myself over the years to never be too optimistic about our basketball program, but this is the first year in a while we have a legitimate go to scorer. Not to mention grantham came on towards the end of last year, the transfers are now eligible adding depth, and we have an experienced point guard to run it all.

Center is a spot of bother as Sidy is known to get into foul trouble, but with our depth at guard running a 3 guard set is not unreasonable if needed due to the length of grantham and blossomgame.

Biggest thing to me is that we won some huge games last year against top competition, and are now playing in a brand new arena which should bring some crowds. It all depends how we handle out of conference play which has bit us in the ### the past few years but I have higher expectations for this years team than any in a while

Agreed. We need to get off to a good start this year. It's a tougher non-conference schedule, but that's to our benefit because it shouldn't hold us back in March.

I have expectations to go dancing, and who knows what will happen in March beyond that :)

When you are Clemson, pre-ACC schedule is essential

in building an NCAA resume.

Brownell needs to have his team ready in November.

The pre-ACC schedule is not preseason, the games count.

As far as the Center spot goes, I don't foresee a drop-off from last year. I think Sidy can stay on the court better than Landry did, while providing more rebounds and points. He won't be as good defensively, but having adequate length at every position (unlike last year) should really help to make up that difference.

Having guys like Shelton Mitchell (6'3), Marquise Reed (6'4), Gabe (6'4) in his natural position of SG, along with Scott Spencer (6'6), and Donte (6'8) in the backcourt will help our overall defense tremendously. Also, Avery doesn't have ideal height, but he's good on-the-ball so that works well too.

We're set to be much better defensively this year, along with having more playmakers than ever before.
