Basketball expectations

After the BC meltdown, I finally posted that it was time for a new coach. One of the huge problems with the fans at any school is they want to win championships, either National or Conference. The only regular season ACC Championship we have won was in 1990 (I was at that game against Duke) and we have never won the ACC Tournament. The coaches since 1990 were Rick Barnes, Larry Shyatt, Oliver Purnell and now Brad Brownell. It IS time for a new coach, but this is not a new problem, and it will be a monumental task for a new coach to make much difference.

It’s more about

Recruiting than on the court coaching. Clemson DOES NOT attract big time basketball players. They NEVER have! No coach is likely to come to Clemson and bring in top ten talent. It will not happen. TatesLocke was able to do it and you see what that got us! The great coaches have great talent to work with. That is a FACT. Do you believe coach K could make this Tiger team into a top ten team? Not likely. The next coach will have his hands tied just like all the others.

Coach K would almost immediately make Clemson into a top ten team. Duke was nothing before he got there.

Duke had TWO national championship appearances, four final fours, and 11 ACC titles before K. K got them over the hump.

As you so eloquently stated, it won't be easy but after 12 years, it's worth the chance.
We cut the lead to 52-50. Had possession a couple times and threw up wild 3's when we should have gotten it low to either Hall or Tyson. Or even Naz. Pure coaching.

You're right. We need higher expectations.

Seems like our current and previous expectations have been to make it TO the NCAA Tourney. That's like coot logic, being happy with getting IN a bowl game.
We need a coach who will come in with a plan and the goal of WINNING the Tourney. Granted, it's pretty unlikely to happen any time soon, but if it's not your goal, it won't happen.
I know the basketball coach would want to have his own things, but I'd love to see someone come in and embrace the Dabo model and mantra that Best is the Standard. I don't think Dabo would mind. I don't see why the whole athletic department can't adopt that. Dabo had a plan. Not just a plan to win the ACC or to make it to a bowl game, or to win 10 games, but to win the National Championship again. But his end goal wasn't necessarily to win the natty, it was to recruit quality and talented young men, to have a great coaching staff, to develop players, to have a positive and championship culture and mindset.
We need a young, hungry, driven coach who will do this and put Clemson basketball up there with baseball, soccer and football. No one really expects to win the natty every year in whatever sport, or every sport, but we all expect to contend and to excel - not to muddle through with moral victories. Beating UNC finally was great. But I'd rather have won the ACC Tourney. But that's just me.

I do agree we need a new coach but an unknown, young coach will not bring in a CJ Spiller type player that Dabo got to come in and give instant credibility to the program.

But.... isn't that kinda what they said about Dabo when we hired him?
I'd like us to get someone who loves the university, not just basketball, and is committed to Clemson and Clemson is committed to him. But most of all, someone who is committed to pursuing excellence, not just averageness (I know, it's not a word, but it's Tigernet, ain't it?).

Is the program getting closer? Or are we just scrapping it every year to start over and hope the stars align or there’s a pandemic and we can sneak into the first round of the tournament?
