Baseball Scholarships

May 29, 2013, 10:57 PM

Anyone know the deal on baseball scholarships at Clemson? I thought I read somewhere that we only offer half-scholarships for baseball. Is this the norm? Do any other schools do it differently?

Schools get 11.7 full scholarships for 28 players I believe. You can carry a team for 35 players, but 7 must not be on scholarship. A player receiving a minimum scholarship must get 1/4th of a full scholarship. Other than that players can get offered larger scholarships compared to others. I think this is pretty accurate.

Allocation of scholarships is an important recruiting strategy.

I couldn't blame a kid of modest means accepting a full scholarship to Coastal Carolina or Georgia Southern over a partial to Clemson.

Also, the economics very much incentivize kids to go to an in-state college.

We recently lost a recruit who liked Clemson, because USC offered a full ride. That might be OK, as they will only have 10.7 schollies for rest of team.

As a side note, I find it irksome that coaching salaries far exceed scholarship expense at most big colleges for football and basketball.

Essentially correct. You can have 27 max on scholarship and

8 walkons to get to 35. And guys, virtually no one anywhere gets a full baseball scholarship. There may be some who's total package (baseball money, academic money, lottery money, etc.) equals a full ride, but it is extremely rare for someone to get a full baseball scholarship.

The scholarships are limited for baseball the players split them up.I think the better players get the most money, some get none.Very rarely does a baseball player get a full ride.

1st reply right on. 11.7 scholarships can be divided amongst 28 with 7 walk-ons. With pitching making up at least half roster it is rumored most schools slot about 75 percent to pitching. Minimum is 25 per cent athletic money. So, being a good student is essential for academic money and then save some for others. Tough take for baseball coaches when football and basketball are full rides and then women's sports getting more money because of gender equity.

Baseball needs average attendance of 3,000 to breakeven at $10 per ticket. What impresses me are the athletes that could have had free rides in football or basketball but choose to play baseball, the most difficult of sports.
