Check out pics of some.
* Handmade * Japanese kip leather * Luxury sheep wool wrist strap
EXPENSIVE but highly unique and they even do custom motifs (see Christian one on edge of Catcher's glove).

Sport. When I played all my gear (glove, bat, cleats, batting gloves, etc) cost probably 400 bucks all together

My first bat, ball, and glove came from the sporting goods section of the Western Auto on Main Street in St.George. Probably well under $20. Everything back then was Wilson or Spaulding. I think my glove was a Wilson.

My first real quality glove was a Rawlings Trap-Eze ā6 fingerā Stan Musial model. I think it was $15 or so.
Before that, it was Hutch and JC Higgins (Sears house brands).

If I am recalling correctly back then you had to go to a bigger store like KMart or a true sporting goods store for a Rawlings.
These were the days before national sporting goods chains like Dicksss. There was primarily big national retailers like Sears and KMart and smaller independent chains like Western Auto. Sporting goods stores were basically locally owned back then. I think Charleston had RPM Sporting goods back then.
Is that your memory as well?

For me, back in the 60s and 70s, Harris Sporting Goods was the place in Seneca. Also, in a pinch, Harper's Five and Dime in Seneca had the basic sporting goods.

Thatās the place I was trying to think of. It has been different names over the years but I remember in the 80s and I think 90s it was TNT. Right there on Rivers Avenue next to where 526 crosses.
When you were a kid did your family go to the North 52 drive-in which was very close to there?
My dad worked at GE in Ladson. About once a month on a Friday when he got paid we would go to that Western Sizzler on Rivers Avenue. We would go to Sam Solomon on the corner of Rivers Avenue and aviation. We would go to either Northwoods or Charlestown Square mall. If a good movie was playing at Charlestown Square we would watch it there or go to the North 52 drive in.
Man, I wish we could go back to the 70s and 80s. Before the Internet and cable TV and smart phones. Those things have IMO done far more negative to society than the good they provide. Mankind is not equipped for the type of rapid technological, industrial, and social change we have seen over the last 150 years.

And spent time as a kid in the 70s downtown Charleston because my grandfather worked for Southern Railway and lived on Elmwood Avenue across the street from Johnson Hagood stadium.
I graduated from St. George high school in 1984 and Clemson in 1988.

Yes we sure did go to the North 52 drive-in. Okay do you remember the tall slide and you slide down on a croaker sack. There was also a batting cage attached to it on Rivers just passed the RR tracks? Village Inn pizza and cruising rivers. GO TIMES AND DEFINATELY ALOT LESS TRAFFIC BACK THEN.

My favorite childhood glove came from Western Auto. The brand was Revelation, I think. Probably cost $10 or so. I was set.

The old Saint Georges high school

Became the elementary school. The middle school was originally the black high school, which was called Williams Memorial. The new high school was built right around 1970 and it was next to the Dixie Youth Little League field. Thatās where I played Little League.
When I was in elementary school the field you mentioned was across the street and was our playground.
Sadly, Saint George high school no longer exists. It got merged with Harleyville-Ridgeville and is now off Hwy 78 and called Woodland.
St. George and Harleyville hated each other. That was a huge rivalry. Not just in football. Saint George guys would date the girls from Harleyville. Now they are merged. Blasphemy!

My first good little league glove came from Delaneyās Sporting Goods on College Street in Greenville. It was a Rawlings, Lew Burdette model. Since Lew was a pitcher I am not sure why I git it other than it was a cool glove in the middle 50s.
Oh, it was $15!
