She got busted cheating in class and instead of normal responses of guilt, shame, remorse, or even fear, she actually felt aggrieved and went on the attack.
Got me thinking, this isn’t much different than the weekly occurrence of someone cutting you off in traffic and instead of the old “my bad” wave, they give you the bird.
So what’s happening that’s making people feel above adhering to basic social contracts of decency and consideration? Social media, and the narcissism it implants into its users is all I can figure…is there something else I’m not considering?

I grew up on a corner house in a neighborhood. People always used to cut the corner so we got a large boulder and put it at the corner. Problem solved. As we got older, friends of me and my brother thought it would be funny to roll the boulder in to middle of the driveway.
LOL. Good one. The first few times.
Then we got jobs it started making us late for work because we couldn't get out of the driveway.
Well my bedroom was in the front of the house and one night I saw the fuggers rolling it down the hill. I went out and they ran. But I knew who it was. A few days later I saw him and his brother getting gas at a QT. Walked up to the car and told him it was funny the first few times, but knock it off. We all chuckled and they agreed. I turned around and saw their mom storming over their car.
"What are you doing?! What are you saying to my kids?!" Keep in mind here 'kids' were 18-20 years old and I was 21 or 22 at the time.
Their mom flew off the handle. She went directly to my home and cussed out my parents saying her kids would never do that, I was out of line, etc. Her and her husband had never talked to my parents again, and that was like 20 years ago.
Meanwhile, the rock never moved again and both her kids have multiple DUIs and the older son was thrown out of UGA.
######## parents raise ######## kids.

Makes me glad I used to beat the shid out of my kid! NR, only had to get his attention about twice when he was about three. His momma didn't cut him much slack either but don't think she ever spanked him. Just made him realize he was going to be responsible for his actions. The cops would visit the kindergarten too and I think that's where he got a deep respect for authority...not from me.

Go anywhere in the world and you'll hear some fuckhead yankee complaining. They are insufferable ######## and want the whole world to know.
We were on a private beach on Grand Cayman island enjoying a fruity drink and perfect weather. Meanwhile, 10 yards down the beach some ####### is dressing down the wait staff on a power trip. Accent alone told us they were from the New England area. Can't you just enjoy yourself and where you are for once?
That mentality has seeped in to the south over the last decades and ruined manners and kindness.

It turned a whole bunch of otherwise regular people into insane raging asssholes. A lot of folks started looking at normal, everyday behavior as an attack on their safety or something.
I think a lot of younger kids probably picked up on this and are running with it.

The other half is people believing that common courtesy gestures like masks and distancing in the early stages of Covid were an attack on their very freedoms and liberties that the founding fathers granted them.

A few months in when it was obvious it was all theater that people started getting aggravated about being forced into said courtesy gestures. If you wanted to wear a mask to walk 20’ into a restaurant that’s all good, but when you start demanding I partake in the ritual is when I have a problem.
Which is pretty much what I’m talking about, many people became accustomed to others acquiescing to their demands, regardless of how ridiculous they were. And in their mind it became an attack on them if people didn’t.

The anti-vax anti-mask anti-science crowd had no part in this whatsoever, being generally calm and measured as they are.
A logical person might see how both factions could contribute to the sheer assholery happening around us. I'm glad you can see through that fallacy and get to the actual root cause: liberals.

But everything is national news nowadays. When I was a kid, a student grabbed a chalkboard eraser, wound up, and whipped it point blank into the back of a teacher's head. Did not end up on World News Tonight.
Here's another anecdote: One year in New Jersey reports of bear sightings went up like 10000%. You know why? Because they created a hotline you could call to report a bear sighting.

So what’s happening that’s making people feel above adhering to basic social contracts of decency and consideration?
I mean, I don't wanna get political but...
You can't toss out a certain someone setting an example for our whole society.
But a bigger influence is the "Not my baby!" parental attitude that immediately looks to defend the child instead of hold him/her/it/xe/they/whatever accountable. The kids learn from it and know to game the system. Deny and play the victim and mommy comes running with claws bared.
I think the social media/natural narcissism with it has to be a factor as well as you mention.

A tale of 2 parenting styles

Was at the Furman CU softball game on the berm and there were these 2 boys around 11-12 throwing a claimed foul ball around. It got away from them once and bounced off the back of a bag chair someone was sitting in. Owner of chair kind of laughed it off and gave the ball back and asked them to go behind the camera stand where they wouldn't run the risk of hitting anyone. One of the yellow shirts had appeared by then and also calmly reinforced the "If you're going to throw your ball, go over there away from people." Well a few minutes later the ball got away from the kids again and bounced up through a group of people and under their feet. Yellow shirt beats the kids to the ball and picks it up and says "You had your chance, the ball is mine now." Both kids go get their dads. One dad comes in screaming and hollering, yellow shirt tells him if he doesn't want to get kicked out to back off and go away. He stomps off cussing and fussing. Other dad comes up and calmly asks what happened and when he hears the story, has his son apologize to yellow shirt, the folks the ball went through the second time, and the lady it bounced off of the first time. Dad then told son, you need to stay right beside me for the rest of the game. When the polite family started packing up, yellow shirt went up to the boy, thanked him for apologizing, shook his hand, and gave him the ball.

that they only appropriate way to view the world is our own, and that anyone challenging the way we view it is "the problem." Almost all Jokes are personally offensive now to someone. And if one person has a right to be free from any personal offense, then we all do. This is not a liberal or conservative phenomenon.
The media has fed this problem with constant inundation of scary, click driven crap. We now admire people who do nothing to add value to the world.

Certain behaviors/ideas are learned there that otherwise never would have been learned if exposure to them didn't exist.
Ideas are planted. They are then copied and revisited. In the end, a certain numbness I think is created towards the idea due to the normalization of them due to repetitive exposure.
Unfortunately these ideas ain't normally about helping old ladies cross the street. They tend to be more rude, violent, and generally socially unacceptable.

It would appear that letting kids talk only to other kids, all day long with no supervision, leads to Lord of the Flies
