Transfer Portal thoughts

Sep 25, 2023, 6:49 PM

Some I have heard on this act is though we will find the perfect gem in the Portal. When I hear this I think, why are they abandoning their team and if they are so great why isn't everyone trying to find the resources to get them to come to their program? What if your program can't come up with the million dollar deal they want? They could be pretty high maintenance and take away from team chemistry. How many Portal kids has Kirby or Saban gotten from the Portal? I would love to see some answers. I really think there may be 2 or 3 that could solidify a class but these 2-3 would be solid players not superstars. For example, a senior kicker would have been a good take last year not to take it away from the top rated kicker we recruited but to give the young kid time to get into the college game. So, I'm not looking for a fight on this post- just asking questions. I do believe in development and the use of the Portal to perhaps solidify an existing class. I tealize any that respond it is just your opinion just like this post is JMHO. Go Tigers!!!!

Check out 24/7 sports. Click on transfers. You can look at every team and go back 4 years.

I think you already know the answer. If you watch any game the announcer will say which school a kid just transferred from.

FSU best wr. The one that made a big catch in the 4 qrt was a stud from mich st. They also got the gamecocks best offensive player, bell.

It varies based on the team/program.

Colorado was 1-11. Their talent was atrocious. They’ve tripled their wins from last year with essentially all transfers.

FSU was pretty low talent wise when Norvell took over. He knew he had to BUILD quick to solidify a foundation in order to justify their program to HS recruits. He currently has a top 5 recruiting class out of high school and his intention is to rely less on portal and use it more as a strategic stop gap to fill holes quickly.

Clemson does not need 15-30 transfers. They still have adequate talent. What they do need is 2-4 “gamechangers” at key positions (preferably 1-2 at WR).
The biggest thing “anti-portal” fans miss is that fans that are “for” Clemson using the portal simply want Dabo to fill needs to return to elite level. So far he hasn’t done that. Hence our “issues” as of late. If Dabo is the recruiter we think he still is then he should be able to do similar in the portal. Using whatever NIL advantages as possible. Our players get paid. What’s the big deal in transfers seeking to get paid too?

Some people are getting paid.

Some people want to move up a level in competition so they have more visibility for the NFL draft.

Some are both.

There are definitely players we might have taken from the portal but I'd expect for most or all of them there was tampering going on and they had a deal in place with a team before entering the portal.

Not sure about actual numbers but off the top of my head Saban got the Williams kid from Ohio State to be their leading receiver in 2021, and Jahmyr Gibbs from GT was their leading rusher last year. Also grabbed the Burton kid from UGA. UGA brought in JT Daniels (who transferred to WVU and is now at Rice) and that Gilbert kid who got arrested in Nebraska for breaking and entering a vape shop before the season started. So long story short they both have used the portal to try to fill positions of need and like recruiting it’s hit or miss and some coaches do it better than others.

This view of portal players is ridiculous

“Abandoning their team”
“High maintenance “
Etc.

How about guys who know they could have a shot but stuck behind another player at their position? This is what KB did, this is what DJ did. And others. Stop trashing kids trying to get ahead. It’s a small window to make it happen.

As the saying goes - The Lord/Portal giveth and taketh

Sep 25, 2023, 8:25 PM

…away.

I’m more concerned about the portal TAKING, than GIVING.
You absolutely cannot count on having a stable roster of players to develop.
If Clemson ends up 8-4, I suspect the portal will TAKE 20 players (1st & 2nd string).

Therein lies our portal problem

We give give give and never take.
Our opponents do both.

I think that we should look at when someone leaves look at what may help. WR, Kicker an solid DB. I don't think we need to fill the roster from the portal but maybe a couple of guys that can contribute right away. We still recruit well but when a guy has been in the system for a couple of years and wants more playing time someplace else, we should use that opportunity to replace with some skill.
