I support Daboās stance on the portal.
As a former Clemson athlete (different sport) I appreciate the developmental and loyalty to players aspect.

There was a SC Baptist preacher who once discouraged his congregation, even married couples, from having sex standing up. He was worried someone would see them and think they were dancing.

Hey dumb A$$, DJ was benched bc he never got any better than he was when he first walked on campus. And please tell who are these elite WR's that you were talking about in the portal. Don't you think that if they were ELITE WR'S that the program they left would have done everything they could to keep them at those schools. I've never heard of a school that had so many elite receives that they had to leave to get playing time, I personally don't think so!!!!

These receivers left with tampering, which Dabo Swinney will never do! They all knew where they were going when they entered the portal. The WR room at Clemson has battled injuries for 3 straight years. Take away the injuries and Beau Collins, Ingata, Cole Turner, Antonio Williams, even Troy Stellato all are being spoken of differently. This also would have probably resulted in 2/3 fewer losses per season the past 3 years. If the OL has seen health as well it's possible Clemson would have been in the Natty hunt also. None of these could have been made better by a portal player that Clemson could have possibly gotten. And Dabo Swinney would never replace a player because of injury unless the player had to retire. Mess around with the portal and like UGA, FSU, and others you will have mass exits every year. Clemson will prove the naysayers wrong this year, especially when they stay healthy!

I don't know you'd call Dominic Lovett elite but he was Mizzou's leading receiver when he transfered to UGA following the 2022 season. Colbie Young had a productive season with Miami last year and he transferred to UGA. He's a big body, the kind UGA was lacking at receiver. I don't think the objective is to find "elite" players. Coaches are looking to strengthen their rosters and add depth. Kirby recruits at an elite level. If he can improve on UGA's roster via the portal, every coach can.

Philosophically, I understand Dabo's approach. It's a reflection of his values and reason for coaching. I have to respect that, and I do. He's one of a kind in the profession. I love the guy. Unfortunately, the world is not so kind, and college football is now a professional sport. I don't like that, but it's the reality. As long as Clemson plays it this way, we're at a disadvantage. We can still win at a high level, but championships may be hard to reach. I think ultimately this money grabbing landscape may push Dabo put of coaching.

You may well be right. I agree with how he runs the program and admire his loyalty to his players (which for some reason seldom seems to be talked about by the pundits. perhaps loyalty is another value that has fallen by the wayside in the country). However, as you pointed out -- "college" football is actually professional football now. Just played on Saturdays, and somewhat dishonestly, still called college football. And in the end trying to do things the right way and still win at a very high level may not be possible in a professional sport, and one without any real rules -- caps, free agency restrictions, tampering restrictions, etc.

Dabo could quit tomorrow and do whatever the heck he wants to for the rest of his life. But the commitment to this school, the community and mostly(aside of faith) developing young men, is what motivates him. At what point does all of the social media charged atmosphere, conference bs and especially the constant critique that cuts that tie?

Not hard to find a Dawg fan in Savannah. He's retired, 66 years old and was gracious. He said he respects Dabo's approach on NIL and the portal, but UGA fans want a coach who wants to win championships at the highest levels under the current rules. He expects a fight in the 8/31 game, but he sees clear recruiting advantages to UGA in the years ahead. I hope to see the Tigers shock the world and reset the grid two weeks.

Doesnāt UGA the mascot live in Savannah. Or did that movie lie. As Tiger of 60 years my second cousin Kellie graduated Georgia as Veterinary she is good krazy. Best part of UGA when her horse needed emergency surgery. They did it at UGA and used it teaching the veterinary students. Cade wins by 24. Then later UGA by 24 over Texas

"What he needs is those big time players on the outside who will make the big plays." That was what one of the guys said.
Who could Dabo have brought in this year from the portal who would be better than Wesco and Moore? Who could he have brought in this year that would be better than Tyler Brown or Antonio Williams.
Mike Norvell, for comparison, brought in two of the highest ranked WRs in the portal. 1. Malik Benson - many considered the #1 WR in the portal class this year. Last year he caught 13 passes for 162 yards and 1 TD at Bama. He is expected to be FSU's #1 receiver this year. But, nobody is expecting him to be Keon Coleman. All indications are this year FSU may have 4 WRs who catch 20+ passes, but none catch 50. 2. Jalen Brown - highly recruited WR in the portal. He signed with LSU last year and redshirted.
Are either of those significantly better than Antonio Williams (when healthy) or Tyler Brown? Now, if Tyler had entered the portal, it might make sense to try and grab Benson out of the portal. But, he didn't.

I don't think it is an exercise in bringing in receivers better than Wesco and Moore. It's acknowledging they haven't played a down of college ball. It's recognizing the team would be better served allowing those guys to gain some experience and not expecting them to carry the load this year. I don't think either of those guys should be benched. They should play - a lot - because much will be expected of them. I see the portal, in this case, just providing some depth and experience so not all of Clemson's offensive success rests on two guys who seem to have a ton of upside but haven't played a down.

Not clicking the link as IDC about their opinions. If the portal were the answer, teams like USuC would be in the playoffs as it seems like half of their roster is transfer players yet they still suck. The top teams seem to use it sparingly but they obviously tamper and buy players both of which are against the rules (but nobody seems to care). The whole thing stinks and Dabo has taken the high road as usual.

without using the transfer portal to improve our roster.
We can talk all we want to about being a developmental program and Clemson family and all that. Those things are great, but at the end of the day talent matters and we make it nearly impossible on ourselves by shunning the portal. Itās a great way to address holes on a roster, and fill needs with experienced and talented players.
Expecting guys already on our team, who have been buried on the depth chart, to step into significant playing time on a consistent basis is a lot to ask. Itās not realistic, no matter how great Dabo thinks we recruit and develop players.
This strategy of not using the portal is making us a young team every year, and puts us at a significant disadvantage.
Plus, itās a ridiculous notion that using the portal is somehow unfair to players already on the team. If thatās the case, then please stop with all the macho talk each year about positions having to be earned. And also stop bringing in high school recruits who might take the job of a veteran who has been on the team longer.

I'd be willing to bet it's the portal player who want a guarantee of being the starter more so than the players currently on the roster worrying about playing time
Telling a portal player he'd enter the program at the bottom of the position and will have to earn his way past the 4 star players currently on roster sounds like it'd be more of an issue

Then perhaps you could explain how Clemson has maintained absolute elite level talent on the defensive side of the ball without one rental player. If it can be done on one side of the ball, it can certainly be done on the other. Engage your melon, judge.

Give me a break. The portal makes mediocre teams better with other good teamsā 2nd and 3rd stringers. Itās not required to succeed when you recruit well. I have now doubt Clemson keeps winning with Dabo- he should be given credit with being the top coach in college football given he doesnāt have a ESPN and CBS pumping up his employer and school to compensate.

I have no problem with Dabo's use of the portal. However, I do feel he will have to change his stance on NIL if he wants to be successful in recruiting the talent needed to be on top. I feel we lost out on a good many talented high school players this year due to money. While I don't agree that any of them should be paid, it's become the norm. If he changes his stance on NIL, I feel he can use the portal sparingly as he has done in the past.

We are talking about the starters in the portal who are either moving up in competition level and/or looking for a better situation for themselves.
Itās amazing that you and others are generalizing the portal as a bunch of backups who arenāt good enough to play for us, although I know who that incorrect thought came from.

The portal is poison. Most players donāt match. The āgoodā ones are not team players. Many times, they want a bidding war or ann anuto starting job instead of working and proving their worth. Be very selective if youāre a coach.
