As a Basketball Fan, how do you keep sane after each year

is the same story..up & down & all around with the same mediocre winning record even after getting 1 or 2 upsets along the way.

The program’s talent and coaching is about the same last 15 years which shows any outsider with insight that Clemson Basketball is stuck and going no where exciting.

If other CU programs like FB or Soccer had performed in the same mediocre fashion over last 15 years, bet their coaches would be gone and player evaluation with a need for better overall talent would have occurred.

We might lose our next 3 or even 4 if we make the tournament. 5 losses in a row overall would sink the season. On the other hand, we might do great. We will see. People act like the season is tanked. Its been a good season overall. In a way, there is still a long way to go.

Most of us know the season isnt tanked.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I guess we expect more from other sports than from men's basketball.

May 31, 2022 Clemson has fired baseball coach Monte Lee after his team missed its second straight NCAA tournament.

Nov 19, 1998 Clemson Coach Tommy West, his team struggling through a 2-8 season, was dismissed yesterday

Mar 8, 2013 Clemson fired women's basketball coach Itoro Coleman on Friday after the Tigers' former point guard failed to return the team to the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference in her three-year tenure.

March 27, 2018 Audra Smith out as Clemson's Women's basketball coach after five seasons

Jun 4, 2015 Clemson fires longtime baseball coach Jack Leggett

"This decision was not an easy one,” Radakovich said. “Jack Leggett has served this institution with distinction for 24 years, the last 22 as head coach. It’s fair to say Clemson Baseball has been competitive over the last few years, but our objective is success, defined by competing for ACC Championships and winning in the NCAA Tournament. I have high expectations – and I know our fans and student-athletes have great expectations – for our baseball program.”

The Tigers also won regional titles in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. Leggett guided Clemson to the College World Series in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2010. For all his accomplishments, Leggett was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame in January 2014 in Dallas, Texas.

Tied for 4th in conference, dance card punched and 20+ win season. Given our history, how could anyone but the LF not be pleased with this season?

All I can conclude is that they are applying a football world view to basketball. That, or they have a weird desire to bash the basketball program and conveniently ignore logic.

It is easy because I have been a Clemson, and basketball fan in general, for 60 years and basketball has not changed. The nature of the game is that the outcome of any game is determined by a few made or missed shots, long rebounds and stupid passes. We have never been a power in basketball and likely never will be, but in no way does that mean I do not watch every game that is available and as long as the good Lord allows, I will keep doing that. My favorite time of the year is when we have endless games in the conference tournaments and NCAA tournament and this will be another great year because there are so many teams that can get hot and win at any time. Basketball is a great game, love it or leave it.

With defeatist attitudes like that it's no wonder we keep Brownell.

Unlike you I want Clemson to be a power in basketball, and think there's no reason why we cannot be in an era where even small school teams like Creighton, Gonzaga, etc. can be in the top 25 regularly.

Tell me why Clemson should not aspire and work towards being a basketball power? Why Clemson should be happy with just *not* being complete failures "Hey, we might finish in 6th place in the conference this year! What a great year, we didn't finish in 9th like everyone predicted! Hey, we only lost by 6 points, what a close game it was! Hey! At least this year we were actually FAVORED in some ACC games, even if we did lose a lot of those games."

I think until we have new leadership, we have to be satisfied with a 20+ win season and going to the playoffs. Even though 68 teams get to go, unlike football which is 4. 12 starting next season. This is just where we are at. It’s still very fun to watch.

Well, a 20 win season pretty much means "We didn't lose too many of the non-conference games we scheduled, and we won most of the ACC games we played against the dregs of league (losses to Ga Tech and ND)."

So yeah, good deal. We didn't lose to Queens or Radford, unlike, say last year's loss to Loyola-Chicago and SCAR., and we didn't lose to Louisville.

most years we have nine losses by January, and you are complaining about our ninth loss in March when we are only 3 wins away from sole ownership of first place in the ACC. It is a marathon, not a race, and doing well in the tournament is about having a hot streak when it matters. UVA is sitting at 9 losses, after losing 3 of their last 4 and getting run out of the gym by Duke last night, how would you describe their season?

You have to look at it from the perspective that we have never been a basketball powerhouse. We've never seen the success of the tobacco road schools for instance. I think the powers that be at Clemson decided long ago that we are a predominantly a "football first " school and thus don't invest as heavily as some would like to become competitive with those schools consistently.

We do on occasion have a " respectable " season which to seasoned Clemson fans have come to appreciate.

That's the complete opposite approach of most ACC schools with the exception of other football powerhouses like ourselves most namely FSU and Miami.

These "BB" first schools take the approach in basketball that we reserve for football.

It's been that way for awhile , quite a long while actually.

What has happened in the past and would likely repeat itself , is that if we were to have a run of back to back seasons that we play toe to toe with these BB powerhouses and make a splash in the NCAA tourney , , a school with greater aspirations than our own on the hardcourt , will come in and poach our coach.
See : Rick Barnes , and Cliff Ellis.

Not that I personally agree or disagree with our approach , that has been what Clemson fans have come to expect having witnessed it firsthand.
