Are the rankings in all college sports fair?

3

May 11, 2023, 9:29 AM

We learned in basketball that it's no longer about winning and losing, it's about who you lose to and who you beat. It's a flawed system, because they're making assumptions that the team you beat or get beat by is either good or bad. Many of these rankings are based off preseason rankings (which are biased guesses at best). Therefore if a conference like the SEC has many teams highly ranked in the biased preseason rankings, all the teams will be propped up whether they win or lose during the season. It's a self fulfilling prophecy, while conferences like the ACC has only 1 or 2 teams highly ranked preseason, your wins and losses are all considered bad and don't help your ranking win or lose.
Couldn't much of this problem be eliminated simply by not having any rankings until halfway through the season? At least this way you'll have a better idea who sucks and who is good to base the initial rankings on.
The system now just blows. It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$.

What do y'all think?

No, they're not fair, because bias impacts the rankings. Last year, TCU was clearly one of the best teams in the country, but they received their first vote to be ranked (and only got 1) in Week 5. And yeah, the NET thing is really stupid.

But on the other hand, we benefit tremendously because of bias for our football team. We're expected to start the season #8. In 2020, we went 10-2 and got blown out by Ohio State. But we started the 2021 season at #2, ahead of Ohio State, even though we lost more talent than they did. We ended the season #16. But then we started 2022 #4, despite our team not changing very much. We ended 2022 #13, but now ESPN is predicting us to be #7 or #8 to start the 2023 season. We're definitely benefitting from bias in football and getting the benefit of the doubt (though you will notice we're falling each year).

So I'll take it.

It does benefit us in football, but is that fair to all the other teams? Having 8 teams ranked in the preseason almost guarantees your conference a good year. I just don't like the fact that those rankings are based solely on past performance. Bad system.

I'm not sure Clemson is ranked because of bias.

I believe Clemson is ranked because of Clemson history over the last 10+ years in football. We've done better than all but two teams in the nation, UGA and Bama. ESPiN refused to say what everyone who watched Clemson play for the last two years saw every Saturday.

We might have done as well with a running back playing the QB position and all those analysis know it. They just didn't want to offend their audience and readers by saying 'DJ sucks!'

We may or may not have a good QB to start this season. Idk, we'll see. Evidently the media believes we will be a bit better this season than we were last year. I agree with them.

That literally is bias. Basing a team's ranking based on their historical success rather than the most recent year.

It is not fair. Nor is it meant to be. It's what the so-called "experts" believe. How else can explain Notre Dame being in the top-10 almost every preseason? Last year the pre-season top 6 were:

Alabama - finshed 5th
Ohio St - finished 4th
Georgia - finished first
Clemson - 13th
ND - 18th
Texas A&M - unranked.

So, they got half of them kinda close. But here's the thing about the experts. They're never wrong. If a highly ranked team gets beaten, It's not because they over-ranked them. It's because they under estimated the team that won. For example: 2013 NC game, Alabama-ND. The Tide killed them. Wasn't even a contest. The experts? Alabama must really be good to beat ND like that. Couldn't possibly have been that ND was way over ranked.

This rule however does not apply to us. If a highly ranked Clemson team gets beat it's automatically because Clemson is over-ranked. Then it's the experts saying, "See, we tried to tell y'all that Clemson is only ranked high because of their schedule."

ND, USCw, Oklahoma...

They preseason select many teams to promote because the media always has one goal, they want attention. Love ND or hate them folks watch ND games though most of the audience hates ND.

This is not quite accurate. There is no pre-season NET ranking...there are no biases or votes. It's just math. The NET isn't even released until a few weeks into the season so that there is enough data for the algorithm's results to be meaningful.

But the preseason rankings are always there, and ironically the NET seems to agree with them.
All I'm saying is don't put out any rankings until the season is half over. That way there is an actual body of work to look at.

Fair ain’t got nuthin to do with it…..

It’s all opinion of journalists or coaches.

Polls are published to generate buzz so the journalists get more reads or clicks.

Anyone read more into it than that will be disappointed.
