With all of the outside noise about the ACC starting to heat back up, I thought this would be a good time to update everyone on where Clemson stands. I told someone a few weeks ago, after everyone got wound up over a few stories, that I felt bad about taking some of the fun away. I don't want to. I said it felt like everyone had their bags packed and were in the security line at the airport - could see their departure gate - and I sent them all back to the airport lobby.
Let's address all of the stuff that doesn't concern Clemson - I have no doubt that the ACC is looking to further expand. The conference has at least three replacements in place - for the time when maybe Clemson and FSU and UNC leave - but is looking to expand past that. As you look at some of the schools that are named as potential add-ons, it makes it even more pressing for Clemson to get out and join the big boys.
So, where does Clemson stand today? Not a lot has changed. I know some people were thinking the coaches' meeting this morning would offer some clarity or hope, but I've been told it was the Dean of Students and AD Graham Neff hit on alignment and the same talking points.
However, here is something new for all of us. A guidepost if you will. I was told by a Clemson contact the weekend of the Syracuse game that none of the schools can pull the trigger on anything legal - such as take the ACC to court to challenge the GOR or leave - until the three new schools are ratified by the league (perhaps adding those three not in the best interest of the league members? Still digging). Once that happens, then we might see things commence. Since then I've heard from my buddy at UNC who said that he heard the same thing up there, and another contact here this morning told me the same thing.
I still believe things can happen fast, and I believe it's all in the works. And now, maybe, we have an idea of what will be the trigger point. As always, I will keep looking and digging.

The ACC had no choice. Clemson, FSU, and UNC are forcing their hand. If any of the 3 were to leave (and the conference falls below 15 members), then ESPN could renegotiate the TV contract for much less money. The ACC is between a rock and a hard place.

Great reporting there, David. Thank you.
The 'guidepost' angle resonates with what had previously been shared about a change in league composition potentially voiding the current GOR and forcing a reset there. The three in for the potential three out adds to that belief.

If you first add 3 teams, then lose in court, won't you per school payout go down to about $27 Mill? Your just making your piece of the pie small.
UAB Tulsa and Memphis will not move the TV contract higher.
Clemson is staying in the acc.

The piece of the pie was always going to be smaller, and that's why this deal is value dilutive. The people for the move wanted everyone to focus on the "pot" of money the new teams would forfeit, but didn't want to discuss what happened at the end of that period when the schools would begin receiving equal distribution. They aren't bringing in full shares, so once the overall pot is split evenly, everyone will be making less money.

Picking up ECU, UCF & USF instead of the crazy ones lined up at the door now. Competition wise would be about the same (outside of Stanford Olympic sports) and travel would be MUCH less.

Right the ACC will be nothing more than the Big 12 (after O-UT), Big 12 already looking like the American with UCF, Cincy and Houston. With exception of BYU their new additions are not helping one bit.

They can only delay for so long (around 6 months or so). I assume the new teams are officially joining next summer since the PAC will be no more after spring sports are done.

This could suggest a negotiated buy out with acc. ACC adds the calford Smu teams and Clemson, UNC and FSU start talking buy out. USF and Tulane join and then two other schools can start negotiating, etc… ACC can work on becoming academic d1 conference and keep ESPN contract. Extra money from teams leaving showings keep them on par with or ahead on Big12. Clemson fsu and unc to power 2.

Thanks for the info. Those teams will certainly have the networks ready to fork over truck loads of cash. I wouldn't watch UAB and SFla play if they were in my back yard.
