Harcombe vet from 1978. I used to have to bike in from off-campus to make that 6:30am shift. The only positive were those hot cinnamon donuts right out of the oven with ice cold chocolate milk.

Met a ton of cool people working there.

I ate at Harcombe. Thought this might be an advertisement for a class action suit.

Campus dining halls have gotten much....MUUUUCH nicer than in our days, but that same old skool milk machine with the giant metal handle for dispensing is still present and accounted for.

No doubt the feed at places is much nicer...

I guess that's good...but I'm not entirely sure.

I think the current generation of students are having a drop in the standard of living when they leave school, which might be the source of some of the angst being felt now.

As a very general statement...they borrow a ton of money to pay for college and all of the faculties are much nicer than they were 30-35 yrs ago...only to get out and be burdened with huge debt and having to cut their standard of living. Compare that to living is moderate to crappy conditions...learning to make the best of it...being perfectly happy...and then feeling a sense of progress upon starting a job out of school where now you feel like you "have some money" and can move on from ultra-cheep living.

Didn't work there, but at the age of 17 I thought Harcombe was amazing. I loved the idea of a place that I could go to eat pretty much any time, that was right next door.

Yea, and I grew up in a house in SC with no central air.

I thought Johnstone was the best place ever.

There's a reason you thought that

BECAUSE IT WAS

These kids don't know what they're missing in their dee-luxe hermetically sealed carpeted climate controlled on-campus condos.

Yep. Sometime around '73-'75? My memories aren't that skrong about some things. I think I remember keeping up the salad bar and those big vats they mixed stuff in made an impression. As well as watching how they made skrambled eggs...hmmm? Still good friend with a guy that I met there and lived in the Clayton House at the time. We ate good for free. Remember there were two girls called Fred and Pete working there. They were cool. I remember Rose.

Worked there '79-'80 during my Jr. year. Mostly Breakfast shift but sometimes during supper. Liked it for the most part. Roommate hated it because I'd get up before 6:00 to be there on time. Living on D-4 made it easy. Been awhile since I thought about that. Thanks for the memory!
