I think Horace was better than Larry…

…just due to the fact that Horace ran with Jordan during those championship years.
But, Larry was no doubt a better dunker.

I think the graphic is correct as related to Clemson, as I cannpt think of any former Clemson players currently in the NBA.
As far as the greatest NBA player from Clemson...
I would say Dale Davis and Horace Grant could both be argued to be the best. Followed by Larry Nance and Elden Campbell. Trevor Booker probably rounds out the top 5. Although I might be missing someone.

In terms of NBA career, I’d vote for Larry Nance.

For his 14 year career, Nance averaged 17.1 points per game, 8 rebounds per game, 2.6 assists per game, and 2 blocks per game. He was also a three-time All-Star, All-Defensive Team three times, and won the first-ever NBA Slam Dunk Competition.
The other prominent Clemson NBA players such as Horace Grant and Dale Davis can’t compete with Nance’s accomplishments in my opinion.

A lot of people are probably surprised to see Larry Nance at #16, but he had a really good pro career.
In terms of the others, I agree with Duncan #1. I'd probably put Malone at #2, but it's hard to argue with the ranking methodology.
Rodman at #10 is a joke. He was an outstanding rebounder, and a good defender, but he was an offensive liability and not a great passer. His leadership was poor, he couldn't control his emotions, and he was a distraction to his team (sometimes significantly so) for most of his career. He's one of the most overrated players in recent memory, especially when talking about the all-time greats.

In terms of college career (not NBA career)...

Horace Grant: JR season: 16.4 PPG / 10.5 RPG SR season (1986-87): 21.0 PPG / 9.6 RPG Career totals: 1,563 points / 981 rebounds / 82 blocks His senior year the team made the round of 64 (only NCAA appearance)
Larry Nance: JR season: 13.9 PPG / 8.1 RPG SR season (1979-80): 15.9 PPG / 7.6 RPG Career totals: 1,341 points / 784 rebounds / 108 blocks His senior year the team made the Elite 8 (only NCAA appearance)
Unless you want to swing it because Clemson made that 1980 Elite 8 run, I think Horace Grant takes that cake here by a pretty decisive margin.

Concur with Grant as top Clemson Player in ACC Play
Jan 24, 2023, 9:57 PM
[ in reply to In terms of college career (not NBA career)... ] |

I was there and cheered for both. Grant was the better college player. ACC regular season champ and POY. Nance was the better NBA player. Nance put on a lot of weight & muscle upon joining the NBA. My recollection is he had teeth issues which affected his ability to eat right in college, and this was corrected early in his NBA career with big time results. Billy Williams was leading scorer and considered the top Clemson player in 78-79 and 79-80 seasons when he was 1st team All-ACC. Nance was top rebounder and shot blocker and 2nd leading scorer.

TBF, he did have a big block in like 93 or 94 during the championship. But yeah, the Bulls' dominance isn't exactly because of their #3 guy.

I agree with you that Nance was a better pro than Horace, but I disagree with your take on Grant's contribution to the Bull's success. Phil Jackson spoke often about Grant being the catalyst to his defensive philosophy, and that Grant playing that roll affected his offense tremendously. Grant never complained nor did he ever take plays off. People forget that the Bull's leap to championship status came with Pippen and (Grant) joining Jordan! Pippen the offensive answer, Grant the defensive answer! So it is a fair statement that Grant was huge contributor to the success of the Bulls!

No offense, but since when has the NBA been a "team" sport?

Not since the 80's - Celtics/Lakers. IMO that it can't be called basketball, if you limited the kind of defense that you can play. Also, all about self-promotion than the team.

Gonna agree with you on this one, Judge. Nance was easily the better player, IMO. Grant got more notoriety because he played with MJ on championship teams.

Maybe so.
Horace Grant. Longevity in NBA - 2nd longest vs other Clemson pros (Tree Rollins played more) Larry Nance, Dale Davis, Elden Campbell also considered # of NBA championships - 3 with Chicago, 1 with Lakers Highest Net Worth - I believe he is #1 vs other Clemson pros.
Dale Davis played really well in NBA. So did Eldon Campbell and Tree Rollins.
Clemson has had 7 players play double digit years in the NBA. If you count Harvey Grant, then it is 8. But he transferred so I don't count him.
Players drafted since 2000, only Trevor Booker has had a real NBA career as none even averaged 7 points per game.
Now in terms of total professional career in terms of longevity, highlights, accomplishments, etc. - Terrel McIntyre shows out. But he often was playing in second best pro basketball leagure in Europe.
------- This easily shows how Clemson basketball, though rich in history, is not rich in consisten success. All the people who state things like "Clemson should not lose to _____________" really do not know their Clemson basketball history.
Clemson has been a middling program at best across its history of basketball. That is why this streak, any sweet 16 birth, and NCAA tournament wins should be appreciated. They are rare.
