2 things

1. higher rates of poverty lead to higher rates of violence.

2 the more guns per capita, the more likely somebody will do something stupid with one. It is the law of averages.

I realize this flies in the face of the sense of regional and ethnic superiority that southern gun owners all seem to believe in, but that is just nonsense. You have higher rates of gun owner ship and poverty, thus higher rates of gun violence.(try not to get hung up on the per capita thingy, it really is not all that difficult a concept)

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You actually made sense. Thumbs up to you.***

its the "per capita" game that those without common sense

Mar 14, 2014, 11:01 PM

are duped into believing.

the city of Chicago has over 500 murders every year. So does New York City.

The entire STATE of SC has about half of that. Yet it is considered more violent with the twisted stats.

If a small town like Pickens (as an example) has ONE murder, it has a high "per capita" rate and is deemed "more violent" than a huge metropolis like Chicago or Newark. Where would you feel safer walking the streets at night?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll dumb it down for you here.....

Mar 15, 2014, 3:01 PM

I know this is going to difficult, but I'm going to give it one try. I know mama told me not to argue with folks like you because you have way more experience than I do.

Say I'm in Clemson (or any city w/population of 10,000), coming out of Walgreens with my family. Two meth heads jump out of the bushes, attacks me and tries to hurt one of my kids. I pull out my 9mm and dispatch them both.

That turns out to be the only two "victims" of gun violence in Clemson during the entire year.

2 "victims" of gun violence out of 10,000 population.
same as 20 out of 100,000
same as 200 out of 1 million people.
same as 1200 out of 6 million people.
Hopefully you can follow that complex math.

Chicago has 6 million people.
If Chicago has less than 1200 victims of gun violence in a year (about 3.3 a day), their per capita ratio is lower than Clemson's.

Therefore, by your stat chart, Clemson is a more violent place per capita than Chicago. Because the formula says so. Because 2 in Clemson > 1200 in Chicago.

THAT'S complete and utter BS to anyone with a brain. But that is how your statistics are counted, therefore it must be a "fact" that you would totally stand behind, given your belief system.

Re: I'll dumb it down for you here.....

Mar 15, 2014, 8:41 PM

The per capita number tells you what the average person's odds are of being a victim of violence. It's not crazy to say that the higher the odds, the more violent the place.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.

He does raise a good point, though. At some point,

Mar 17, 2014, 8:29 AM

doesn't "per capita" break down as an effective way to compare populations? It reminds me of the murder that happened in Clemson several years ago. Some transient psycho blows through town and kills a girl. Now, per capita, Clemson's murder rate goes through the roof, but no one actually thinks that Clemson itself is a dangerous, violent town.

Not that it matters. The gun violence debate is a lot like the Global Warming debate. Everyone waits until evidence supports them and then goes nuts. For years Washington DC was the most violent city in America (or one of the most) and yet had the strictest gun laws. Gun-restriction-advocates weren't impressed.

You can more statistics, such as medians and standard deviations. They would provide additional insights into the character of a certain location.

P.S. You just called DC the most violent city in America. Are you talking per capita? ;)

in my analysis of gun law. :)

Seriously, I have no idea if that is EXACTLY what was said but I do remember it being a consistent issue (that stricter gun laws do not protect a city from gun violence).

The real reason I responded was to say that I think it's reasonable to say that a per capita analysis of one population of 6 million and one population of 10,000 might not be the most valid comparison.

centuries ago people used argue that if the earth was round, people would fall off. They rather to continue to be wrong than have to admit they were wrong.

we still see this behavior today, especially when you get further from the interstate highways.
