the slaves were not freed on Juneteenth 1865 .
President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 did not free slaves in the United States. It only freed slaves in states that were rebelling where Lincoln had no authority.
the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States and was passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865.

correct.. JUneteenth was not the end of Slavery.

It was only an executive order at that time issued by Lincoln and only for rebelling states. It still had to be ratified into law . I guess December is a bad month for more holidays so we chose JUne.
like JUly 4th.. it was a day we agreed to declare independence but we weren't independent until October 19, 1781
or like people who think marijuana is legal.. it isn't.

Just curious. How about the black men that owned slaves in the South? Do their descendants not get to celebrate Juneteenth or does that not count since they aren’t white?

I am not a history major but the black slave owners or their ancestors had to BUY their freedom. Maybe the descendants could celebrate the perseverance of their ancestors who had to BUY their freedom just because of skin pigment.

in most/many cases, they still could not own property, go to integrated school, or hold an integrated job. Not a whole lot changed, unfortunately. Not for a long, long time. It was purely a political move.
