St. Mary's County version: They didn't think they were "part of the fraud" that needed downsizing. It was others that needed the downsizing. What did the Leopard do instead? "Chomp."

https://wtop.com/maryland/2025/03/st-marys-county-voted-for-trump-diners-there-worry-about-effect-on-military-base/

Quoting from the link:

”Most times, when we want change, we want it to affect other people, not ourselves,” said the military contractor. “And this is affecting quite a lot of people.”

Approximately 10% of St. Mary’s County’s workforce consists of federal employees.

Traditionally Republican, many county Trump voters have lost their jobs with the ongoing downsizing of the federal government.

”There’s some folks who didn’t expect this — didn’t see themselves as being the fraud that was being referenced,” said the military contractor, referring to the Trump and “Department of Government Efficiency” efforts to reduce fraud and waste within the federal government.

Veteran fired from VA version: He didn't like the "chainsaw approach" of the pain. They wanted it to be surgical. The Leopard's reply? "Your Pain. My Gain. Chomp."

https://www.wqad.com/article/news/national/veterans-fired-say-betrayed-by-trump/65-cefcfb6c-cfff-4c24-8a40-d77041b461eb

Matthew Sims, an Army veteran, lost his job last month as a program support assistant at a mental health clinic at a VA in Salem, Virginia, after moving with his wife and three children from Texas. He voted for Trump and said he supports reducing the size of the federal government but not this way.

“I support downsizing, but it’s just the way they’re going about doing it. It’s like the chainsaw approach, I guess, versus the surgical approach that they should be doing,” Sims said.

Historically everyone wants to cut waste and fraud until it hits close to them or dead on them. Same with elected officials who claim to want to cut costs but good grief holler like a hit cat if a military base in their district is up for closure. You want to save then cut away, if there is no pain you did not cut deep enough. $36T+ and counting, if we are not able to get spending under control absolutely nobody is gonna like the outcome.

Its the same phenomenon where people hate Congress but love their person so we keep getting the same corrupt scumbags reelected every two years. It's always somebody else who needs to change their ways. How convenient.

There were a million ways to consolidate and pare down the government that were absolutely necessary...that did not involve humiliating public servants and throwing them out on their a$$es in a public spectacle...but the cruelty and humiliation is the whole point. Anybody who watched the opening sequence of "3 Body Problem" can see exactly how a culture war works - you just put horns (or in this case, a dunce cap) on somebody, cast them as the villain (in China's Cultural Revolution, that was anybody even remotely rational, since rationality is sort of by definition the enemy of simplistic us-and-them monkey tribalism...and then feed them to the masses to the delight of the crowd, Bad People getting their just desserts. It worked for the Romans, it worked for the Nazis, it worked for Communists of all stripes, it worked for the Church during the inquisition...and hey, it's still working today.

As George Orwell commented in 1984, the exercise of power is a boot stamping on a human face - forever.

Who gets it doesn't matter. Fairness doesn't matter. Rationality certainly doesn't matter. Just so long as someone gets it, so everyone can see who has power and who doesn't.

Same old sh!t. Same kind of people applauding it - dumb, ill-informed, mean...and so, so small. Whereas the people perpetrating it are something else - vicious, immoral climbers who know better, but perfectly willing to say the sky is pink if it gets them ahead, and if it gets them a chance to put down the boot, well, hey...more's the better.

Anybody who thinks the game is remotely about fairness or progress or justice will figure out the hard way eventually it was never any such thing. Hopefully we'll figure it out before we wind up like 1950's China or 1939 Germany, or Russia pretty much anywhen.

Face, meet boot.

And we're just barely 2 months into this....

That propaganda stunt...where Trump declared a bunch of deportees to be terrorists without any due process, and cameras were pre-set for the arrival in El Salvador....we're gonna see more and more of that.

We're also going to see people that are here legally - green card holders, students, tourists - get deported for thought crimes, found on their phone. That part is already happening.

This is turning into a broader attack on speech and due process, sanctioned from the very top.

And don't be shocked if citizens themselves are thrown into gulags with no due process. Once a fascist regime consolidates power, they never run out of groups of people to hate. And they never run out of people to punish.

I think most of America will still support these deportations. That's a losing battle for the Dems, even if they are in the right.

Have you ever been laid off, terminated or perhaps had to be the one tasked with implementing staff reductions? I have, both sides, so I get the feelings on both sides.

There is not any great way to let people go, just isn’t. There will always be costs to the person and their family during any reduction of staff.

Sometimes cuts are made that take out good people. Sometimes great people are let go, bottom line is the business must survive or all are out the door. The government is no different.

The part of the general population expressing glee is not right , there is no glee in it. That does not change the issue this business is $36T in debt, interest payments per year are almost $1T. We are spending $1.5T-$2T more than we take in a year, something has got to change.

I've fired people and I've been fired.

There are laws that must be followed. And usually, when downsizing occurs, it's after a lot of discussion & investigation into how to downsize. That has not occurred with Trump/Musk. Many laws have been broken. And the layoffs have often been just to settle an ideological score, and often followed by faked accounting of the amount of $ that's been "saved".

When your Department of "Government Efficiency" makes up nonsense about how much they've saved, then you know the whole point of the exercise is to inflict pain instead of actually making things better.

And many Trump voters will pay the price. I wish that weren't the case. But here we are.

Chomp.
