I know the liberals love spending money

However they hate spending it on constitutional items like defense

But, they love giving US money to other countries

Must be rough

It's probably in our interest to support Ukraine with arms and not money or direct military support. It's also in our interest to support Israel with arms and not money or direct military support.

I partially agree with you on the Ukraine matter.

Our time to support Ukraine via military equipment and ‘accessory’ equipment such as tractors, bulldozers, back-hoes, communications devices, etc. was very early in the conflict. At that time, we needed to ‘go big’ with the equipment.

Below is where our views diverge.

Unfortunately, our government didn’t know what to do and invaluable time was wasted; while time was being wasted, so were the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. Bigly.

At this time, Ukraine is nearly out of fighting age (15 to 40 year old) men. The war has deteriorated into a stalemate. The time is NOW for a negotiated peace, which, unfortunately, will absolutely lead to the loss of significant territory (e.g.,some or all of those parts of eastern Ukraine which are currently controlled by Russia).

This is the correct thing to do as far as world stability is concerned. It is also the correct thing to do so that Ukraine can get a breather and then have time to establish a powerful border (which will need to be very long and endowed with modern fortifications) with Russia.

Unfortunately, the OBiden Handlers Admin desperately needs their first foreign policy success. For that primary reason, the USA will figure out a way to keep the war going.

Of course, the secondary reason for the USA wanting to keep the Ukraine war alive is to create the justification for our government to purchase tremendous amounts of frantically expensive military equipment. The financial opportunities for both the defense industry and politicians / bureaucrats / politicians / potential politicians to make big money off of this are stupendous.

I don't remeber the word defense being used in the constitution.

Not that he's noticed that in the several years he's been here. It took me at least two years to convince him you were the lawyer in here and not me and I'm still not 100% it ever really sunk in.

Attack you enemy, then retreat, and hide all of your military in churches, hospitals, and citizen's homes so they can't be attacked. Then wait, and build up for another attack. And so on.

That's sort of a one-off situation particular to Hamas, though. Heck, you're the one who got me hooked on Peter Zeihan; you know we're headed for a far bloodier, more regional, less globalized world where the US is no longer acting as the world's mall cop. The second it starts becoming obvious all around the globe that the US is out of the peacekeeping business, you'd best believe anybody with a historical axe to grind with their neighbors is going to be looking to settle old scores, and without the US there to advocate (and push for) restraint, who's going to show any? If Zeihan's right - and he seems like he's been right about a lot of things - we're headed for a far, far more brutal mid-term future, not a more peaceful one, where a lot of the regional conflicts that have been on enforced hold for the last 80 years flare up again.

The US lost a lot of world credibility with Iraq. For good or bad, a lot of citizens don't want the US to be the world cop.

I don't think most of us appreciate the role a strong, ever-present global U.S. military presence has played post WW2. I've complained in the past myself about the U.S. being the world's police force, but if we hadn't been, the world would look very very different now, and not in a good way. Of course there has been almost constant war in parts of the world over that time, but it likely would have been much much worse without everybody else having to respect U.S. military might.

Stuff like THIS ^^^ is where I agree with you re military aid for Israel. Help Israel to shoot down Iranian rockets = good thing.

We need to keep the non-Hamas entities out of the Israel / Hamas conflict.

As for direct military aid to Israel for conducting their war with Hamas? Nope, no aid.

This whole conflict was made worse by before it even started by Israel refusing to take measures to protect its citizens despite getting highly credible warning of a Hamas attack several days before Oct. 7.

Combined with the Israeli authorities quasi-encouragement for the now-famous music festival to be relocated to a much more vulnerable venue, the war itself has the stench of a Netanyahu choreographed ‘bigger deal’ than would have happened otherwise, Netanyahu was successful in arousing far greater global sympathy for a very powerful Israeli military response than would happened if the Hamas attack did not create such devastating results.

This war is too dirty from both sides for us to financially bail out Israel. Netanyahu needs to bear some political consequences. Israel will not lose this war; that is the outcome that the USA should want. But Israel should not be ‘rewarded’ for their role in conflating the conflict.
