An Interesting Story

There was an IT guy back in the 90s and a company hired him to build a some software. He did and it was great. He used the latest and greatest technology and techniques to provide very useful software, delivered by CD ROM installation. The company made millions. He was given a big fat salary for his efforts and the company dominated their market for 10 years.

But then all of a sudden the web got more powerful. Cloud based products that didn't require local installation became possible. Other companies began developing on Azure and Amazon Web Services and were able to sell their software with monthly subscription. All you have to do is login. You can do so from anywhere, not just where you installed it, in addition to their mobile apps.

But this guy.....he's not having it. He likes the old way. He's the best. No one is going to tell him that he needs to change or adapt. Sure he made some changes. Instead of needing a CD ROM, you can now download the software from the web. Very convenient. But you still have to install it on your PC. And you can only access it where it is installed. A mobile app? pshhhhhh.....overrated.

The stock holders are getting more and more vocal year by year. They want changes and for him to adapt to the new industry. They don't want the guy fired because they know he's good and has done a lot for the company. But they know they have to adapt or lose their investment. Some stock holders take the guy's side and say "hey, if he was the best in the 90s then he knows what he's doing!".

The company's revenue has dipped over a 4 year period. Stock price is falling. But their lead programmer holds fast. He continues to ensure them that his way is the way forward.

I refuse to part with my Blockbuster and Winn-Dixie stock. It has served me well...and it will come back and serve me well again!
