The Amboy Dukes have become one of those old rock legends in Rock Hill.

They played at a long-defunct club here back in the early 70s called The Bee Hive, and if you took a headcount of everyone who claimed to be there, then the attendance for that show must have been somewhere upwards of 20,000 people for a club that held maybe 300-400 people tops. Even bengaline was probably too young to get into the Bee Hive when they played here. It had changed names and become more of a disco by the time I was able to get into the place in the late 70s.

Way down Cherry Road, maybe a mile or so before Porter's/Branding Iron.

Back in those days, that end of Cherry Road headed toward the river was kind of a no man's land. Can't remember what the place was called in the early 80s, but it was a disco. The original building is gone now too...not really sure what's there now since I don't go that way much.

It wasn't considered to be a place that RH's upper crust hung out.

In 1979 or '80 I was visiting a friend in G'ville. Keith's landlord's children were using 33rmp disc like frisbees in their back yard which was next door to Keith's.
I walked over and saw a couple of disc made in the mid 70 which didn't interest me but made me curious as to where the yard apes had gotten them. They led me to their garage while telling me their mother had joined a record club, Columbia or some such, in the early 1960s.
The records came in and ended up in a rack there in that garage. I asked if any were for sale and we settled on one dollar per. I bought Amboy Dukes Journey to the Center of the Mind and a Blood Sweat and Tears album since I only had 2 bucks cash.
I left the albums in the car when I returned home and TigerFurLife®'s mama threw them away because they were "DEVIL's MUSIC!'
I didn't kill her because she was the most beautiful woman I've ever met and I was putty in her hand.

There's only one way to handle a woman who would throw your records away.
