Alternatively, why I agree with Dabo that Nuk should have

Jan 12, 2013, 2:53 AM

stayed one more year.

While I don't think Nuk would make a huge jump in the draft by staying an extra season (maybe 20 or so picks), I think he could definitely have solidified himself as a first round pick. Dabo is correct in that there's a huge difference between being a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick. The thing about NFL draft position, is that by just jumping up a round, or even half of a round, you end up guaranteeing yourself a much greater signing bonus.

Look at last year's draft for WRs:

Blackmon picked 5th: $7.1 Million Signing Bonus
Floyd picked 13th: $10.0 Million Signing Bonus
Wright picked 20th: $4.4 Million Signing Bonus
Jenkins picked 30th: $3.5 Million Signing Bonus
Quick picked 33rd: $2.3 Million Signing Bonus
Hill picked 43rd: $1.9 Million Signing Bonus
Jeffery picked 45th: $1.7 Million Signing Bonus
Broyles picked 54th: $1.2 Millon Signing Bonus
Randle picked 63rd: $830K Signing Bonus
Posey picked 68th: $680K Signing Bonus
Graham picked 69th: $670K Signing Bonus

As you can see, the difference between being drafted 20th and being drafted 54th was a $3.2 million signing bonus. Between 30th and 45th is even $1.8 millon.

I hope Nuk ends up impressing at the combine and our pro day, but I think by staying one more season he could have gauranteed himself a much bigger payday.

Like the research, although I still disagree that he should have stayed another year. The only thing holding him back is speed. He doesn't look as fast as he is on the field. I think he will run a good time in the combine and will move up the draft board in a hurry. Not much he could have improved on. He's solid all around. I think he made the right decision, although I would have loved to have him for one more year. Best of luck to #6!

I'm only concerned because the NFL draft reviews

all seem to agree he's a 2nd round pick. I honestly believe he could have become a 1st round pick with one more season. People forget he only had 1 spring practice due to playing basketball after his freshman season. He had good freshman and sophomore seasons, but he made a huge jump this year into a nearly elite receiver after his first year of having a spring practice. He would have easily entered the season as the #1 senior WR on NFL draft boards had he come back.

It's over dude. Give it up.

He's not coming back.

Technically that's not true...

James Davis declared for the draft, then changed his mind the day of the deadline.

But I do think it is best for him to leave.***

You think Sammy is leaving after next year?

I do and I do not think they want to be in the draft at the same time.

Speed!Ever heard of Fred Biletnikoff,or Wes Welker?
Neither had great speed ,but they could get open and thay had great hands.
Speed will only take you so far,but even the bad teams need a possession type of reciever.Nuk is that type of receiever.

If you referring to my post I just have one question. Were either taken in the 1st round? Yes Nuk is a possession receiver, but as I stated he's faster than he actually looks. A good number in the 40 would put him in the 1st round without question.

I think this is the weak point in your argument: "he could definitely have solidified himself as a first round pick." Not really. By coming back Nuk would have risked not only injury, but being overshadowed again by Sammy. Even if he had a "pretty good" year it would be difficult to have a better than he did this year. Anything less than spectacular would depress his draft chance.

Absolutely right. No way he has another year like this one next year, and his stock very likely would fall. Having Sammy back at full speed and in good health, chance of injury, and defenses game-planing to shut him down would certainly contribute to a less productive season. I would think Dabo knows that also, but I'm sure he had his reasons for trying to get Nuk to stay another year. I am certain that there is no question in anyone's mind that Coach Swinney only wants what's best for Nuk's future.

It was smart for Nuk to decalre for the draft. What if he came back next season, and his numbers were cut in half with a healthy Sammy? Say goodbye to the first and second round...
