Back in the day there used to be hidden gem cities to live in.

Even in the mid 90's Charleston was a hidden gem for people outside of the region. Asheville now is known by everyone all over the country. Are there any hidden gems left in this country that you know of?

If there are, I'm not hip enough to know about them. And there seems to be a push by those that are already there, to keep them hidden. Oh, they want us to come, spend money and then leave.

Is see a lot of potential there over the next 200 years.
Anyway, cities that are coming around but not that hidden are Wilmington NC, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Knoxville, Buffalo, even Cleveland is supposedly coming around. Those aren't that hidden though. People know.

Bozeman itself is meh, I run my errands there. It's got that gentrified area feel. Lots of black and white and sheet metal aesthetic. It's outdoor access is arguably tops in the country with Moab and Bishop CA. I'm spending a week there next month, will report back.
Boise is a Utopia. I couldn't believe how nice of a city it was. Clean, easy to get around, pretty. Not the best access to outdoor recreation. Probably about the same as Denver in my book.
Also, Shout-out Salida CO as a gem of a town.

I thought Moab sucked, but it was a sleeping point for us to get to Arches and Canyonlands, which it appeared everyone else was doing.
Imma have to look up Bishop, CA but that is a trip I want to take, to Yosemite, Death Valley, Sequoia, and Kinds Canyon National Parks.

If you're looking at a Glacier trip, know that the Many Glacier section is going to be very limited access this year and to reserve spots early.

the latest it ever has, which was after we went. Oh well.
I got Missoula and Bozeman mixed up. Going to Jackson Hole this summer, might drive up to Big Sky or Bozeman, but probably not. Missoula is way too far away.
Do you know much about Gardiner, MT? Other than John Mayer living there and it is the North entrance to Yellowstone, I don't know much about it. And I only know that because when Yellowstone got washed out, he had some concerts up there to raise money.

I barely know her! Jk, I basically live there. I know it well. AMA.
small town, not a lot going on. I wouldn't say it's a cute town. Mostly a service spot for the north entrance to Yellowstone. Nice people, a few spots to eat, some hotels. The Yellowstone river runs through town. It's gorgeous. Pretty undeveloped for the scenery. Probably because it's old and remote and there's not a lot of place to spread out with the park boundary, the forest service boundaries, and the river.

That's the beauty of it up here. There's a dozen ranges as nice as the bitterroots. The distance from population centers, grizzlies, and cold keep people away. The ability to get lost and have a lake to yourself for a whole weekend is second to none.

The Ironbound in particular. If you can't afford Hoboken or Jersey City, Newark may appeal.
https://www.nj.com/essex/2025/01/closed-since-1972-ballentines-newark-brewery-is-reborn-as-apartments.html
The main building of the P. Ballantine & Sons brewery complex was demolished a few years ago and the brand founded in the city in 1840 by Scottish immigrant Peter Ballantine now belongs to the blue ribbon bottlers at Pabst.
Rents for the market-rate units will start at $2,000 for a studio apartment.
Gimme some more of that sweet, sweet gentrification.

The airport opened on October 1, 1928, dubbed the Newark Metropolitan Airport. It was the first major airport to serve the New York metropolitan area, the first commercial airport in the United States, and the first with a paved airstrip. The nation's first air traffic control tower and airport weather station opened at Newark in 1930.

Newark has good international food scene, and brings in some good performers.
Still preferred living in Doylestown with occasional trips to Newark, versus the opposite.

Yeah that is always so appealing. I always wished I would have had one of those. It so touch washing the dog in my own bath. I would prefer to rent a place with a communal dog bath.

Tons of great little towns in WV that are hidden. Too many to name but if you watch the Wrong Turn movie series you may catch some names.

I would imagine it's probably best to just to wanted around aimlessly and see what you find down random roads.

If it's not a hidden gem, they've done a good job of keeping it from getting out of control.

That looks like it is in the middle of nowhere. How did you find it? Looks like the nearest airport is for ever away. Tell me more about this place.

I'd like to be able to say I've been to both, especially to the chili cookoff in Terlingua.

it was September. I'd wreck-o-mend going when it's a bit cooler
3 hours from Midland/Odessa Airport, which might be smaller than GSP, but just as nice (then)
you get to a point where there's NOTHING for like 2 hours besides desert.
That *could* be a problem on the way back, if you partied like crazy for a week but turnt it up to 11 the last night, went to bed at 5am and was in the van w/ 12 other people by 7am, and had to come the realization that you might have to pull over and tdrake on the side of the road with absolutely nothing to shield you from view.
if that sounds specific, well....

Not sure how hidden it is, but I thought Frisco CO was a pretty cool town that seemed somewhat off the radar for CO towns.

Redneck, nowhere good to eat. Hot, hut as far away from the beach as you can be in Florida
Traffic is terrible because the lights are nit synchronized
All of the horses and that industry is pretty cool though

Cuyahoga falls , downtown is on the up and up. Was there for a work event this past late summer. I couldn't live anywhere in OH but it was worthy of a visit.

The Charlestonians are fading. There are outrageously loaded people with connections that aren't from there. All you need is enough cash and you're in if you carry yourself well.
