All you people who are parents...have you ever thought about all

the junk you have in your house? Do you have any plans of getting rid of that stuff before you die off? YOUR KIDS DON'T WANT IT.

I think about getting rid of the stuff in my garage now because it bothers me to have a bunch of junk laying around, even if it is in tote boxes. And I don't even have any kids, so I know whoever ends up with all my crap is definitely going to toss it all (so knowing that is kind of a dis-incentive effect for me to do anything about it--what do I care if someone I don't know has to throw it all out?)

But my mother is getting up in age and has 50+ years of her and my father semi-hoarding everything in her house, that I know one day 99% of it will go to the dump.

comes. You may can find one that, for a larger cut, does EVERY bit of the work for you. Then you can just sell your families junk to another family so they can then deal with it later down the road. THEN you might get a few doll hairs to put gas in the boat and a couple sixers of PBR

and when she died, my older brother took a ton to his house, including alot that came from grandparents. Now his house is FULL of old shiitt. We have a couple things, sentimental items, nothing big except the nice dining room furniture from grandparents that she specifically gave to me. Even that takes up too much space. With the right buyer, I would sell it, but my brother would be PISSSSED.

The yard sale was tough and we didn't make much, lots of work, lots of haggling, just let someone else handle it all or throw it all away.

Yeah no way I'm doing any yard sales for my mothers old stuff.

jewelry, furniture, etc.

When mom and dad moved out of their house, I took 2 sets of China and the silver, because we wanted a nice dining room and the ability to serve a lot of people. Got my gggg grandfather's bed. Couple of paintings that went in our house, and that's about it. Oh, and dad's guns and safes. Also all the old photo albums, etc. Interesting thing, mom told me to toss a bunch of boxes on the street for garbage. I dug through and found one loaded with old pictures I'd never seen. She said to chunk it. I kept it. And she was livid I didn't want her mahogany bed. shfh

The rest went in an estate sale.

And one of the shotguns I have I'd like to get rid of and get a good one, but I can't make myself spend $3K-$5K for something i use once a year or 2 at a turkey shoot. I've looked into selling the others but I can't seem to find a good source to buy them all.

Have three sons though, and the oldest two like to hunt, so the extra guns will have hopefully 3 homes some day. I think we have 43 or so guns.

it was pretty cheap because we allowed them to keep/resell anything they wanted. Not sure how all that works, but they coulda made bank with the furniture, appliances, etc. But they cleaned up the place great to sell. Realtor knew about them and lined it all up.

Us kids picked over everything of value and small/mobile enough to take. I would have loved a bunch of dad's tools, but I already had most of them, just no room. Some of what I did take I really didn't want.....I now have a couple huge storage tubs full of old photos and knick-knacks. Threw away a bunch of MY crap that mom had saved for 40 years - little league trophies, report cards, junk like that. Ugh.

I found it interesting that it is generational. When our parents passed away the wife and I saved things like dining room furniture, china cabinets, silver, china, etc. Just the things that our grandparents had and/or parents had to pass on. Everything else is just furniture. We donated whatever was left after that. But the thing is, these kids today aren't interested in any of it. I've noticed the same with a lot of our friends. Antiques shops, yard sales, estate sales are filled with it. I've also noticed that a lot of the weddings we have been invited to, there is no brides registry for place settings, china, silver, crystal, etc. I have seen wish lists on Amazon, Wayfair, Home Depot and the like.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have no need for "fine china".

99.9% of the time when I do eat at home I'm using paper plates anyway.

No way could I have all that kinds of stuff. Just no need or want for it. I guess back in the day that was a thing.

My wife is big on knick knacks and stuff--to me it's mostly just clutter. Every shelf doesn't need something on it; every drawer doesn't need to be full.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we're working on it.

A lotto the stuff left IS the kid's stuff. Several shelves of Barbie stuff. All sorts of stuff for one daughter who still lives in an apt and has no room. It's all stuff that they want to keep, just not in their place. Like a tote full of every issue of The Tiger from when she was on staff there. When that daughter gets married and gets a house, some random furniture that we're hoarding will go there or Facebook Marketplace.

Most of the hoo-ha we store now is seasonal/occasional use. Outdoor furniture, coolers, luggage, Christmas stuff, beach stuff. Some of it is home decorating stuff that we save a few yrs till she decides we're never going to use it again.

Got rid of my parent's silver plate serving pieces, etc last summer, it had been in a tote in the basement since I got it in 1998.

My mother had a solution for that. Once my two sisters and I had grown and gone we came to visit one Thanksgiving. In the garage were 3 piles of stuff. She simply said, "This is yours. Take it with you when you go."

Don't just pitch your crap. Be ruthless.

My youngest just started her first year at Clemson last fall, and we started downsizing over the summer, with a take no prisoners attitude, which was challenging after 25 years of having kids around the house.

Fast forward several months, and we are practically back to where we were when we started out. Shedding all the crap was liberating.

It is liberarting.

Before we moved to Clemson and then more after we moved back, I went on a binge after pulling it from storage (dumb time to do it then I guess). But when I saw how much junk I had I'd never use, I started getting rid of a lot of it. Its time to do it again.

that was the thing with my parents. They lived in same place from when they got married to death, over 50 years. Never had to downsize or de-clutter, they just expanded or built another storage shed. They had more SF of storage sheds than house by the end.

Moving every few years tends to slim down your permanent "stuff", you get rid of it or leave it behind when you move.

1st keep old pictures of kids and randomly place them around the house when they visit with grandkids. The more embarrassing the olds kid pictures _ the better. After holidays stash in storage bin for future opportunities to harass you kids in front of grandkids.

Moved several years back and got rid of a whole lot of crap. Now periodically purge items from closets and basement storage. Have accumulated toys for grandkids but on verge of purging…. Except 4 year old granddaughter is sentimentally attached to every toy she ever played with.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a sucky day _ maybe do a closet purge. AND China _ who knows what to do with it?

Most of my treasures are in cars, tools, a Rolex and a 2002 Martin 0028ec (Eric C) model guitar.

My DNL (no pigs) was first in my family to graduate college. When I asked her what she wanted for graduation she pointed at the black 1985 380SE Benz. Without hesitation I gave it to her on the spot but delivery upon my death.

My only remaining son gets the Rolex and guitar because my 5 daughters don't play and the watch is a man's toy. The tools go to my only remaining son too because girls don't know nothin' about carpentry or Mercedes diesels. Son also gets all the rare MB systems, steering boxes, injectors, climate control and cruse control modules along with everything else I've rebuilt to keep the MB on the road another half million miles.

Clothes can be burnt. I'm getting cremated and the ashes dumped at the landfill.

I'm leaving for Heaven so if God wants music he can furnish the instruments.
