Name a few that you remember as being up at the top in recruiting.
Two come to mind, Hershel and a kid out of Mississippi named Marcus Dupree.

I'm only in my mid 20's so I don't go back tooooo far haha. But I remember Da'Quan Bowers was ranked pretty high. CJ Spiller was a big deal too at the time. I think both were 5*s

I don't know what your criteria is for this.
Recruits that turned out to be all time players? Or just recruits that had a lot of excitement and hype at the time they committed?
I remember being very excited over Willy Korn, Tahj Boyd, Ricky Sapp, Brandon Thompson off the top of my head among others.
But again my (personal) knowledge is limited to early-mid 2000's and beyond

I remember watching the 30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree. Never panned out after college though.
I wonder if Clemson coaches recruited him ???

If I remember correctly, yes Marcus was recruited, but that whole deal was especially slimy, even for those days. Another CU recruit I found interesting? Booby Miles, from Friday Night Lights fame. "And he can throw too!" Not that I think he would have ever left TX in those days, but he was among the most recruited players in the nation prior to injury.

Our recruiting level today is a whole lot different than it us to be. we couldn't pay enough to get 5* to look at us and today that is common. Heck, Dabo might even get a few to sign. lol

Confusing question as every year there is a #1 recruit according to various services, but if you mean as far as hype, I will bite: First one comes to mind is the Clown. Also QB Matt Barkley at USC. He was getting hyped while he was in the 10th grade at powerhouse Mater Dei. Eric Dickerson to SMU.. yeah, the good Old SWC bidding wars. And as already mentioned, Herschel Walker and Marcus Dupree. Although put of all of them, Dupree when hungry may have been the best of them. Just NASTY.

I think you could add Jimmy Clausen to that list as well. When he was in 8th grade, people were already talking about him as the "greatest prospect of all time".

I remember er him as being an absolute stud college QB, but I don't recall his recruiting. I do know that was the period where Nebraska started finally going out to CA and FL for skill guys, and they got over the hump finally.
