All these years later

and it still hurt seeing that puntrooskie play from back in the 80s played during our broadcast.

However, I really enjoyed that our special teams unit looked like they were prepared and expecting the fake punt during this game.

The thing that always sticks out to me about the punt-a-rooskie was that it overshadowed two of the bigger story lines of the game and that era for each team.

one was Sanders punt return. Like him or not he made every Clemson defender look like they had concrete shoes on.

him calling it was essential Prime Time as a persona. Hate it happened to us but that is the kind of thing that makes College Football what it is.

The second thing was not a play but a drive. Clemson taking over at their own half foot line a running the ball up the middle and off tackle every single play and shoving it right down FSU's teeth. It was the drive that necessitated Bowden going all Riverboat Gambler on us and calling the punt-a-rooskie.

those three events in that game foreshadowed the absolute beat down we put on them the next year in Tally!

I love college football even when my team is on the short end of the stick!

seats in the south stands and didn't know what had happened until the end of that play.

Remained in a state of disbelief and anger all the way home to Columbia. Still remains one of the most upsetting outcomes of any game I've witnessed. Dammmmmmmmmmmmit!

The game was tied and we held FSU on 3rd down and you could feel the excitement as they were lined up to punt. When the center snapped the ball I never even looked to see the punter because I was looking at Donnell Woolford waiting on the punt. Then I see Leroy Butler running down the sidelines with the ball. I don't think I've ever been so faked out at a football game. That was a great game but I hated we lost it.

Interesting you mentioned that. My brother-in-law and I were discussing the stuffed fake punt yesterday and how that was good scouting. I recall after the puntrooski game one of the Tiger defenders saying they had keyed on #6 being in the game on special teams as a fake. Sure enough Butler comes in and it is a fake. Good scouting again, but totally missing the key when it mattered cost us the game.

I was sitting in the south stands at about the 10 yard line a few rows up

Where Leroy Butler was tackled out of bounds.
What a lot of people don’t remember is that Bobby Bowden called a time out and he didn’t have one, which is a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty. Couple of other issues that day is that it had rained a lot and the field was soggy. This was before the massive drainage project in 2001 so water was standing on the sidelines.
I would’ve like to have seen their kicker make a FG from 15 yards further back (45-48 yarder) on a soggy field from the left hash mark instead of 30-33 yd chip shot they had.

"The one who thinks we can and the one who thinks we can't are both right! Which one are you, son? Which one are you, son?"

Also our LB dropped an INT on 3rd down right before the Puntrooskie

Think FSU will have a hard time ever running another fake punt against us.

I remember that game vividly.

Ugly, rainy day. We dominated for a while, but Deion’s punt return really shifted momentum.

I remember not really understanding how they pulled off the puntrooskie until later.

It was amazing to me how “risky” Bobby Bowden seemed to be, passing the ball more and doing trick plays. That was such a contrast to the predictable and safe offense we ran (and most teams ran) in that era.

Here is a condensed version for anyone who wants to see it:
