All 80's Clemson squad vs. All 90's FSU.

Jul 11, 2012, 6:18 PM

Who plays, who wins? Just food for though in the heart of DT.

I was born in the 80s so I cant really speak to who would play for us, but I will say that I love the FSU rivalry we have developed.

My heart says the Tigers win (because it always does), but its hard to argue against a team that lost something like only 2 ACC games in the 90s.

As much as I hate to I'd have to give the edge to .......

FSU's 1990's team. They were so dominant throughout the 90s more so than we were in the 80s IMO. They had great teams throughout the entire decade.

Maybe so but...

1. Danny's teams were as tough as any team in any era.
2. Our LB corp led by Levonster are as good as any group in any era
3. Add to the LBs, the Perry brothers, Donnell Woolford, and Terry Kinard and it'd be hard for anyone to score on us.
4. Did I mention Danny Ford as Head Coach yet?

if fsu had been in the acc in the 80's

They would not have went on that run they had from 92 Til when ever......clemson teams back then were feared by all.

An all '80's Tiger defense would have hit them in the mouth

Jul 11, 2012, 7:47 PM

and all that speed they had wouldn't have been near as explosive....in my opinion, our DL from the '80's would be the Perry brothers, Jeff Bryant and Chester with Devane, Steve Durham and Co. backing them up. LB's would be The JUDGE (caps, because he's the best Tiger FB player on either side of the ball i've ever seen), Levon, Andy Headen with Ashley Sheppard, Ed McDaniel, Wayne Simmons and Johnny Rembert backing them up and our DB's would be Terry Kinard, Donnell Woolford, Hollis Hall and Delton Hall who would all drill you in run support and run like hell with Willie Underwood backing them up. The '90's FSU offense couldn't move the ball on those beasts, period.

Also, the offennse would have been a ground and pound attack for the 80's team. That would keep charlie ward and co. Off of the field.

not really fair to make the comparison...

Jul 11, 2012, 7:55 PM

seems that each decade the athletes get bigger, stronger, faster. Today's DE can run 4.4 and are huge. WR are big and fast. Plus, the game changes too.

Some players may be able to cross all decades and will be top talent in any age, but others should simply be remembered at being among the best of the best during their time.

I think....

..that we know the answer to this based on the '88 and '89 games. The key to beating FSU has not changed over the years - negate their athleticism with tough-nosed physical play. Nobody was better at that than Danny. We lost to them in '88 due to a Deion Sanders TD off a punt return and the infamous 'rooskie. Papa Bowden admitted that we were physically whipping their a$$ and they needed the trickeration to win the game. Having learned our lesson, we didn't even let them be close in '89. The biggest tragedy of Danny being forced to resign, IMO, is all the great games we would have had with FSU (and probably another nat'l championship). Well, that and two decades of painful football that followed...

You are spot on..........nailed it

Jul 12, 2012, 2:17 AM

our '89 defense, in my opinion, was the best Tiger D i ever saw and i go back to '77 with being old enough to know what i was looking at. prior to that we had some beasts on D that could have played in any era: The JUDGE, Jeff Bryant, both Perry's, Jim Stuckey, Bubba Brown, Terry Kinard, etc. but that '89 bunch had stupid speed and arrived at the ball in gangs in a bad frame of mind and drilled everyone all year. Just ask OU about that......'88 was a close second.....

Blah blah blah...FSU did dominate in the 90's but they came in at the right time. We were at a down time (just losing Ford and when we started to lose Ford's players), and we could've been right there with them. We are as responsible for FSU's greatness just as much as they are. I hate FSU almost as much as I do USuC and GT.
