but since other folks are releasing their mug shots, here you go!
These 4 guys (me on right aka Bill Willis, age 24, married & living in a WW2 prefab house located near & above present baseball park) were the unpaid volunteer student sport’s writers on The TiGER’s student campus newspaper.
Sammi Carros, 2nd from left,, later became Sports Editor.
We guys wrote weekly independent sport’s articles on current events that were given to us my our Editor to cover, interviewed coaches & players of various sports teams and sometimes were given state-owned cars to drive to various away games and had full press box privileges.
We would bring our handwritten or typed articles to a 2nd floor office by a certain timeframe before printing date where clerical staff took them, corrected or shortened them and gave them the neat tittles and we’d anxiously wait to see the paper days later which was distributed in stands around campus but usually at the Loggia in a huge rack located between the Tin Cans central entrance.
Seeing one’s article was sometimes shocking what with the title, the pic used, the amount of corrections or how much the article was shortened! Felt a bit like a 1940’s actor who first sees the movie he/she acted in and their main parts and/or lines were deleted.
But, it was a super gig and maybe a reason I write on TNet a lot and way too much.
I still have yellowed old paper copies of some of my articles concerning interviewing Coach Howard, Bob Jones, Bonnie Banks McFadden, members of the FB & BB teams, etc..and maybe one day (after 58 years & 15 here) I will post a pic of them.
The two funniest ones being “The Day Coach Howard kicked me out of Fife” and the basketball article I wrote while in Greenville Hospital in Jan 1966 while in a traction bed for a fractured right hip in 28 fragments and was still a bit on morphine and which got the Sports Editor to replace me!
I had a great Clemson buddy & fellow student, Larry Walters, who would visit me and I believe he may have carried this particular article back to The TiGER staff.
Ha..what fun and good ole days @ Clemson College in 1959-1966, ratting & rat caps, climbing the greased Flag pole in front of Tillman, seeing the fiery Gator Farr at a pre bonfire pep rally at the Amphitheater, thumbing rides home, being single & married to compare, the CLEM in Cadence Count, Dan & Dan’s Sandwich Shop, President RC & Moonpie, AF ROTC marching practices on what is now tennis courts, the YMCA and seeing weird movies, thinking football players were campus gods, eating a steak meal at a Walhalla steak house on Friday nights for a Buck, etc~
Go TiGERS..ROCK whether old or modern!

Funny. I thought we were closer in age. I was only 3 years old in 1965; born in Beaufort, raised in Clemson.
Thanks for sharing Bill.

You and I are about the same age. I remember The Tiger well. I think that I wrote a few articles for THE TIGER and the AGRARIAN back in those days. Clemson was great then and ever greater today. I loved it then even though there was a shortage of young female students! How did I survive that??? More importantly, the basketball arena was jam packed on game night and extremely loud. Remember LBB?

and the ole Fife gym rocked as loud & as sweaty hot as Duke’s ole Cameron still does on those rare nights the Devils & Heels came to play.
LJ has never supplanted Fife’s excitement & overall experience even after a zillion millions spent on it. Size can matter (small & intimate) as well as teams that have a real zest for winning.

The younger Mahaffey lived next to me on E5 and became a close friend. We were called Mutt and Jeff because of my “limited” height! He was more than a foot taller than me! Those were the days! Remember when the most exciting thing on campus was “shooting squirrels”???

Randy was in my 1st semester dorm and warned me that I was going to flunk out for spending so much time in front of the TV. Richie was in my chemistry class that same semester - both good guys.

I began my junior year in 1965, and those were the good old days. The Tiger was a good paper then but went to crap a few years later.
Bill, all of the old The Tiger issues are online. Just google Clemson The Tiger Tiger Prints, select the year, the edition, and download. You can read your old articles.

Bill. I was THE editorial writer for the Tiger in 1965 and 1966. You sports writers must have been snowflakes because I had to turn my column in typed. Not handwritten. So, I would go to the old geology. Classroom bldg located behind the YMCA, AND use an old manual typewriter to type my column. I had a key to the bldg and go in about midnight and type. The night watchman would always check on me. I did my best creative writing late at night. My column was never changed, maybe spelling corrections. I had to type it on that unprinted newspaper and that is what went to the printer who I think was in Pendleton or Seneca. The Tiger came out on Friday morning and I think it went to press on Thurs. A.m. or Wed. I TOOK ON THE SACRED COWS, and had a big following. My writing style was pre Andy Rooney. I used a lot of satire and sarcasm in my writing.
I also wrote short stories for The Chronicle and was humor editor. Frank Pierce, field goal kicker on football team also wrote for the Chronicle. I still have my original rat hat. We had some see great times from 1961_66. Met my wife of 55 years at Clemson. I was a junior and she was a freshman. I moved to the Y my senior year so I would not have to buy the mandatory meal plan which I hardly used. AFROTC marching on Bowman field. AFROTC summer camp at Shaw AFB. GOING ON WEEKEND EXCURSIONS TO WHAT IS NOW UNDERWATER BY LAKES KEOWEE AND TOXIWAY And whitewater falls. Killed a 6 foot long rattlesnake on one of the trips in my roommates 1947 chev.which would vapor lock in the hills above Walhalla. My mom and dad dropped me off at Tillman hall. I had a duffle bag, and 2 small suitcases. Went into business office, checked in and got my dorm key and off I went to the tin cans to find my room. Hitched rides home and hitched (thumbed) ride back to Clemson. Had to go thru every small town between Clemson and Greenville as no bypasses were built back then.
Our paths probably passed during those years we were on the Tiger. Mark Steadman was my mentor. Best professor at Clemson IMHO.

in '67 for those in dorms because I was still in the dorms that year and did not get the plan that year. Lots of fried egg sandwiches from the canteen off the quad for breakfasts and trips to Dan's for supper. Wish I could get one of his burgers for lunch on gamedays (and for the same mid-'60s price.)

I was on the Tiger photo staff part of my 74-78 years at Clemson. Enjoyed the access we were given to sporting events and guest speakers. Some of my best work was for the “buzzard” issues. You mentioned RC and moon pie. I took a shot of a six pack of RC cola and some moon pies on the presidents house lawn. So much fun. And yes, I did get called into the dean of students office and given a warning. Wonder where those old pictures are. Go Tigers!

I would like to see you, Clover65 and a few others with a book about the experiences at Clemson, while in the military and just interesting events in your lives.
They would make great gifts for Clemson / Tigernet friends and family.
