Against players sitting out bowl games

Dec 21, 2016, 1:56 PM

I understand the concept that there's life after football, and in some cases that means the NFL for certain highly talented players. I understand how players want to avoid injuries and increase their draft stocks. I don't see how players can do this. What is next sitting out regular seasons games or playing softer like Clowney did when he played? These colleges invested so deeply in you as a person and as an athlete the least you can do is go out for one final game and leave everything on the field. What about for your teammates? What kind of message does it send to them? That you place yourself higher than the team as a whole. It is one thing if you are banged up or hurt, but to be completely heathy and to not play sends a bad message I believe. It should not matter what bowl game it is as to if you should play or not. To sit out a lower tier bowl game also shows you gave up on the season and have no motivation to compete anymore. Don't get me wrong, I can see where these players are coming from and how they are looking ahead to their futures. I just don't agree with the whole concept.

I agree they should have to play but then you get what happen with us last year. I think most people thought we had a player that instead playing his best was trying to just get through the season without getting hurt. I am not sure there is a win win situation for anyone.

Then that guy should quit. He still can get drafted, but if he's not all in, adios.

In fairness to the players

Their workload and commitments have increased overtime, whereas their 'payment' of tuition has only kept up with inflation/costs. Use to only have 11 games plus a bowl. Now they have up to 15 games each season if playing in national championship.

Why are people outraged that players are cutting off one game early, but not worried about kids leaving a full year early? I wish players participated in the bowl games, but that's only looking at it for my benefit. The players can choose what works best for them.

Why play in a meaningless bowl game and get hurt when you can start your professional career?Well, it depends on the individuals situation. Many of Leonard Fournettes family are in jail. He has a ton of people depending on him to make it.
