I know people that could not insure their families due to the high costs of insurance and they now have affordable coverage due to this thing .
Not saying it helps everyone or that it doesn't end up costing some folks more , but it isn't the complete disaster some would have us believe .

Like I said, I understand that the thing hasn't had a great effect on everyone ...but it has helped these people I am close too so I see it a bit differently than some of y'all.

but to hear politicians talk you'd think it ruined the country. but hey, lets not blame the insurance companies who don't give a #### and have purposely screwed us because they may make less money. somehow that reality and truth gets lost in the shuffle and it becomes a democrat vs repub thing. the parties have done such a snow job on even educated people.

Well I am clearly not educated , but I do know that big business in America has absolutely no interest in anything outside of it's profit margins . While gain and wealth is the aim of any for-profit , it seems that forsaking and forgetting who buys and who uses is a business model that will not last for long ...and it doesn't even take a smart man to understand THAT fact .

yep, totally agree. i have seen the healthcare act work for people here at office. but political headlines love an "anger" or "fear" piece to drive their bases to a frenzy. yet, the greedy continue to profit. funny how that works

It's a complete disaster. It will be replaced with single payer, which is what the government wanted all along. There was never any truth to making insurance and medical affordable. Just another power grab.

I'll remind everyone to consider that there was sincere effort to involve all parties in its development, but the country was in a place where it voted in obstructionist who ran on the claim they would block everything Obama tried to do. Shockingly, we gridlocked Washington and then complain about it.

The democrats had a supermajority (look it up) in Congress. They could literally pass anything they wanted with zero Republican input. There was no obstruction. Dems had filibuster proof majority.

And this is what they came up with.

The ACA seems to work for the poor, but it is crushing the middle class that does not get insurance through an employer. As with most government things, it is the middle class that gets the short end of the stick. The majority of the middle class will not qualify for a government subsidy and will end up paying full price for a high premium with an even more ridiculous deductible and co-pay. As a real kick in the nuts, the middle class is also paying (through their tax dollars) for the healthcare subsidies but get no benefit from them.

Thank God I have health insurance available from my previous employer or I would be screwed as I went to the healthcare.gov site and ran the numbers for the federal marketplace coverage. The monthly premium was more than my monthly home mortgage, property taxes, home and car insurance combined. To make matters worse, the deductibles for the cheapest plan was $14,000 - so basically, this insurance will cost you an arm and a leg but will only pay out for something catastrophic - won't help for a routine Doctors visit as that will be paid all out of pocket.

Nope, Congress (rather the Democratic Party) destroyed an insurance system that was working for 80% of Americans in order to cover the 20% that was not insured. We threw the baby out with the bath water instead of just focusing on the 20% that needed health insurance - something that could have been done with a lot less cost and lot less disruption to everyone's lives. That's because this was never really about covering the 20% uninsured - it was about getting the USA to an eventual single payer healthcare system run by the Government. Just wait - single payer is going to be "the fix" the Democrats push to address the ridiculous and un-affordable ACA premiums.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so if i am hearing this correctly.

Oct 25, 2016, 1:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Affordable Care Act is a lot of things but affordable is not ]

those people would be happy to help me out to cover my increases until it becomes unaffordable to them and then we all have insurance and it's affordable to us and we can ride our unicorns into the sunset?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Affordable Care Act is a lot of things but affordable is not

Oct 25, 2016, 12:21 PM

Is this due to the ACA itself or is it due to the Insurance Company's greed with having to reduce their ridiculous margins because of the ACA that they increased their cost to the consumer in order recoup the potential to loss of revenue? The ACA may have flaws, but the biggest flaw is the greed of the Insurance Company's and their ability to sustain their greedy system. The insurance system was broken before ACA.

You couldn't be more wrong. Yeah. Let's blame it on greed. But it's not insurance companies greed. Shame on those people wanting to make money and not give it away, right?

It's government expansion.

Re: You know are on the wrong side when...

Oct 25, 2016, 12:58 PM

That sounds like an accurate description of government officials, not insurance companies. Stop hating success and blaming rich people. There are thousands of people that work for those insurance companies, too.

The bottom line is that companies are in business to make money. Every regulation or stipulation that government or any other entity throws at it makes it more and more expensive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This.

Oct 25, 2016, 12:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Affordable Care Act is a lot of things but affordable is not ]

The ACA is working. Which is why insurance companies are trying to pass the costs onto the consumer. Proving further that there should be NO middleman for healthcare. Your insurance company is the reason your premium went up.

Which is exactly what this is. The government wants the money instead of those "evil" rich insurance companies (which also employ lots of people). The companies would rather earn your dollar via trust and competition with other insurance companies. The government doesn't want to earn anything. It wants to control and grow (because the people do not know what is good for them, right?)

Interesting how there is practically a pharmacy now on every street corner yet we're more depressed, more harried, and less mentally and physically fit as a whole. It's a terrible racket and all the ACA did was mandate this broken system going forward.

Not sure why we don't just shortcut the gradual switch to single payer over the next 20-30 years and just go ahead and make the switch now. It will happen eventually anyway.
