Advice for first time to Death Valley?

36

Sep 19, 2023, 11:33 AM

Hi Tigers - my kids have grown up in Utah watching your guys touch the rock before running down the hill for HUGE games. So I'm bringing them out for the FSU game this week. We are so excited - got the tix like four months ago. I have questions - if these are too many, just answer the first two <img border=">">">">">
1) We're staying in Greenville (y'all booked all the hotels!) so what time should I leave Gville to get to Clemson in time to park and see a little bit before the game?
2) Recommendations for parking? I don't mind paying or walking. Would rather not be blocked in for hours after the game because:
3) Our BYU Cougars kick off at 3:30. Would there be a sports bar or something where we could watch the game and wait out traffic?
4) We wanna experience one of your HS football games Friday night. Can you recommend a great matchup in the general Gville area? Maybe two good teams, or a highly recruited player?
5) We've got our restaurants dialed in (my friend in Gville is a foodie but not a sports fan<img border=">"- looking for other activities in that area before Saturday.
Thanks so much guys and if you ever wanna experience football in the mountains, come out for when BYU hosts Utah or Colorado and I'd love to show you around!

trip and a great time. I used to park below Tiger Town and walk from there. It is quite a hike but well worth it. Getting out is not a problem but the traffic leaving depends. I would get there as soon as possible and enjoy the atmosphere and see as much as possible. The Esso club is a must and it will be crowded.

I hope this has been somewhat helpful and others TNetter's will share their thoughts as well.

Go Tigers and have fun!!!

Response to question 1 - leave at 7:00 am. Get parked and see the campus and Tiger Walk

Response to question 2 - an option - https://secure.touchnet.net/C20569_ustores/web/store_cat.jsp?STOREID=129&CATID=219 or https://www.tigernet.com/Clemson-Football-Parking/Florida-State-2068/forsale

Response to question 3 - Esso Club

Others can better reply to questions 4 & 5.

Thanks for the tips! Looks like the advance ticketing for parking requires the license number, which I don't have yet because it'll be a rental. If that sells out, do you have any suggestions?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Advice for first time to Death Valley?

Parking can be an adventure.

The C-1 lot advance tickets are a good idea. I’ve heard that some people have put “rental” where it asks for a tag, but don’t know if that works.

Some mentioned College Ave parking downtown. Those will fill up early but are great free spots close to a lot of the action.

You’ll also find some pay parking on 93/Old Greenville Hwy at the Episcopal Church.

Just off of 93 there are some neighborhoods that some people let you pay to park at their houses. Look for N Clemson Ave on your map.

On the other side of campus, you’ll find the C-1 lot. People also park along Cherry Rd and along Old Stadium Rd.

Just make sure to get there early. Many of the roads become 1 way closer to game time and if you don’t know your way around it gets really difficult to find your way.

Good luck.

+1 for Soby’s.

If you want som BBQ- Close to Main St (since that’s where your listed places are) you’ll find Lewis BBQ and Henry’s Smokehouse. I prefer Henry’s since it’s local Q. Lewis is good but is TX style Q. Mike and Jeff’s is a little bit farther but good. Buckys BBQ and Charlie’s BBQ are other local favorites but not downtown.

There’s a lot of great food in Greenville and surrounding towns.

And free parking on Kite Hill (opposite side of campus from stadium) is not a bad walk at all. Plus you get to see a lot of campus.
Also free parking at the walker golf course. Even better walk from there.

Enjoy the game! I’ll be there with 80,000 of my friends.

Best food in GVille, all walking distance from any downtown hotel. I have been to the following recently.

Maestro Bistro - a personal favorite. Inside the building next to the Westin.
Jianna
Bergamo - Italian
Halls Chophouse (this one is not as good as the Charleston one, if you are using that as a reference) lively Friday night crowd
Bricktop - new, only been open a few weeks at most. Have not had a meal there but some starters last Sunday. Looks like a really nice place.

Camp is good as well... just like the others more oversall.

Lots of other places downtown as well...

My house is a split Clemson and Arkansas house. We went out to Provo last year for the BYU/Arkansas game; what a beautiful place and such nice people. Last weekend wasn't as nice but what a catch by your guy in the end zone! You couldn't have picked a better game to come to Clemson but the kick off time sucks. There is nothing like Death Valley at night. Have a great time, quickly learn the cadence count and what to do during the fight song and you'll be a Tiger in no time.

Looking forward to more of the same from the Clemson folk. Yes, we're bummed about the kick off, we picked this one assuming FSU would be enough to get it into prime time.

1) I live in downtown Greenville and leave 70 minutes before the gates open. Since it is a Noon game, gates open at 10am. Traffic will be bad so I might leave earlier.

2) Clemson University Parking Services has gameday passes that are good options.

3) The Clemson game will not end by then. But if you want to catch the BYU game, you'll likely not find it on any tvs in Clemson.

4) Daniel High School is better than Greenville but Greenville is downtown-ish.

5) CAMP as the restaurant to go to but you'll need to wake up and get to Clemson

If you see someone wearing Purple Clemson shoes and a Tigers Football jersey in Downtown Greenville in the evenings, that's me. I take my evening walk and enjoy getting a few Go Tigers this time of season.

It is a weird name but Charleston Sports Pub in Downtown Clemson has a ton air TVs and will probably have the BYU game on one of the TVs. Walkons a little further down the road downtown also has a bunch of tvs and will likely have that game on.
If your on on the other side of campus, you can take a shot that one of the tvs at Esso Club will have it on, less likely at Esso since they have fewer tvs and Bama/Ole Miss is at the same time.

Re: my recommendations

1

I agree with Moondog. If you want to catch the BYU game, go to CSP or Walkons in downtown Clemson. It will be crowded, but plenty of TVs.

Esso is a must visit while you’re in town, but not the best option to catch the BYU game.

I think Byrnes High School (Duncan, SC>about 25 mins from Greenville, SC) is playing at home against West Florence High School.

Also, I don't know if you have ever seen the movie Radio (RIP Mr. Kennedy), but the high school T.L. Hanna in Anderson, SC has a home game as well against a less than stellar Laurens High School (0-5).

Yes, Byrnes is playing West Florence Friday night. The atmosphere at Byrnes is great and I highly recommend it. West Florence won last year’s game on a QB scramble from about 30 yards out on the last play of the game. Byrnes looks good this year; should be a good one.

As for BBQ, check out the Smokin’ Pig. Can’t beat it.

If you want to park, leave Greenville no later than 6:30 am (it's a 12:00 game). Try parking on College Av on the street. It's free if you can find a spot. If you see a spot, TAKE IT. Don't drive around looking for something better, or they'll all get taken quickly. If you don't see a free spot, go ahead and bite the bullet and park for $40.00. It will be money well spent. You'll see signs for paid parking on College Av.

Parking is the main thing... once parked, go into some of the shops and buy some Clemson gear. Try Tiger Town Tavern and buy a shirt there. Don't miss Tiger Walk 2 hours before the game (anyone can tell you where it is). Walk around and check out the campus. You'll be hard pressed to find a more beautiful campus. Be sure to see the area around Tillman Hall and the Amphitheater area (close to the library).

After the game, go to The Esso Club. It is truly one of a kind. Right down from the Esso Club are the dikes (which keep Lake Hartwell from drowning much of the campus). You'll get a good view of the lake from there.

Wait for the crowd to leave so you can see everything you'll want to see.

Have a good time, and make sure you talk to some people along the way.

Go Tigers!!! Beat FSU!!!

First, I can tell you've never tailgated at Clemson....

1

Sep 19, 2023, 12:12 PM

1) We're staying in Greenville (y'all booked all the hotels!) so what time should I leave Gville to get to Clemson in time to park and see a little bit before the game?

You need to be tailgating with a cooler full of beer and food at least 2 hours before the game. With this being a 12 Noon game traffic will be horrible. You want to be leaving Grenville no later than 8 AM.

2) Recommendations for parking? I don't mind paying or walking. Would rather not be blocked in for hours after the game because:

There is paid parking all around downtown Clemson (In the neighborhoods). The entire campus will be closed to IPTAY members parking only. I would try to find a parking pass here on Tiger Net (look in the Tickets area) so you can meet them somewhere and tailgate on campus. Watch for scammers...Do not give any money until parking pass is in your hand. Feel free to ask for directions from any tiger fan or even the police on Gamedays.

3) Our BYU Cougars kick off at 3:30. Would there be a sports bar or something where we could watch the game and wait out traffic?

No matter where you park there will be tailgates everywhere with TVs and all the games on. Check out downtown and grab a beer/buy some gear. I'd try to do this before the game if you can. DOWNTOWN will be packed afterward.

4) We wanna experience one of your HS football games Friday night. Can you recommend a great matchup in the general Gville area? Maybe two good teams, or a highly recruited player?

I think JL Mann is playing at Wade Hampton this Friday. Should be a good game. It's close and I think JL Mann is ranked top 20 in the state.

5) We've got our restaurants dialed in (my friend in Gville is a foodie but not a sports fan- looking for other activities in that area before Saturday.

Take a trip up to Table Rock. Stop in Travelers Rest. Sierra Nevada Brewery is about 30 minutes north of Greenville near Hendersonville (Also a cool little mountain town).

Re: Advice for first time to Death Valley?

Sep 19, 2023, 1:28 PM

Agree. DO NOT leave Greenville no later than 7 a.m. 6:30 would be even better. You want to be in your seats in time to see the team run down the hill.

My sophomore year at Clemson, I had a dorm room directly across the street from the Calhoun Mansion.

If you can get to see at least the outside of The Calhoun Mansion, do so. The old South, Southern Plantations, United States history, Clemson University. If any of these are of interest to you then you must visit Fort Hill the original plantation house located in the center of the Clemson Campus, literally just up the hill from the football stadium. John C. Calhoun seventh VP of the United States and Thomas Green Clemson founder of Clemson University.

As someone already stated, very doubtful any tvs in upstate will be tuned to BYU game. This is first and foremost SEC TV viewing and then ACC and BIG.

HS games in Greenville area on Fri. Sept 22. Game time is either 7pm or 7:30pm. Check school website.

There are 54 games for Greenville football on Fri, 9/22/2023. The featured games are by Greenville top ranked teams West Florence (Florence, SC) @ #2 James F. Byrnes (Duncan, SC), #3 Hillcrest (Simpsonville, SC) @ #15 Wren (Piedmont, SC), and #4 Spartanburg (SC) @ Mauldin (SC)

Enjoy your trip. Go Tigers!!!

lol at the folks saying leaving at 8am or 9am - leave at 6am

1

Sep 19, 2023, 3:43 PM [ in reply to Re: Advice for first time to Death Valley? ]

- seriously.

You don't have a park & you don't want to miss anything.

This will be the first test of the season for ticket scanning, security checks, etc. - first big test of stadium staff.

You are here first & foremost for the game & the experience . . . checking everything out can wait till after the game.

Leave no later than 6am - find a park - Google maps the walk to the stadium - leave 15 mins before it tells you to leave to talk with folks, etc.

Plus there is lots to see around the stadium - Cemetery Hill, the Military park right across from the entrance to The Hill - plus friendly folks all around - introduce yourself, tell your story, get fed & hydrated like nowhere else.

Getting up at 5am sucks - but trust me - you DO NOT want to be at an entrance gate as the buses are coming to a stop at the top of The Hill.

Hope you have a GREAT time - it truly is a one-of-a-kind place & people - G O T I G E R S ! !

the worst thing that could possibly happen - you spend 30 extra minutes in a stadium that has had storybook tales told about it.

The possible “waste” of 30 to 45 minutes FAR OUTWEIGHS possibly missing the whole reason you are there.

Also - after the game - you can get down on the field and then walk up The Hill and get pictures with The Rock.

And then you can run down The Hill !!!! It’s amazing.

Welcome to Upstate South Carolina! You will be visiting the best part. However, the Low Country is good, just avoid Myrtle Beach like the plague - too many transplants there, including the worst kind, Ohio State fans.

1. I am leaving at 7:30am from the Greenville area. However, I have reserved parking. I am definitely not one to know where to park. Follow the above posters' advice.

2. See 1. above

3. My recommendation would be Esso Club, Tiger Town Tavern, or someone else's tailgate. I was able to watch South Carolina lose walking to the game last week at multiple tailgater's TVs.

4. 🤷 I grew up in Alabama, so I haven't followed HS football in Upstate SC.

5. Would love to know what restaurants you go to. There are a TON of good restaurants in the Greenville area. Downtown-wise, I love Sassafras, Trio's, Smoke on the Water, Rick Erwin's West End Grill, Lost Cajun, Roost, Carolina Ale House, Will Taco, Rocky's Hot Chicken, etc. Have not been to Hall's Chophouse, but everyone who has, raves about it. If you want a cozy ambiance steakhouse, head to The Peddler. Not the best steak in Greenville, but great salad bar, atmosphere, and service.

Hope you have a great time! Go Tigers!

I read all the above and, since nobody stated this, will add that the pregame activities at Clemson are likely the best in the entire nation.

That being added, the departure times written above … early (0700) is my suggestion. Early allows possible free parking on College Avenue.

One person (above) writes to be there for Tiger Walk … 1000 … great idea. That leaves another hour to mill about the stadium area because … and I mean this for any, but especially for first time attendees … being in the stadium AT LEAST 45 minutes before kickoff allows you to absorb the pregame wonder.

Oh yes, wear a hat. If you are in the shade, good for you, but otherwise a hat is needed.

Now, finally … rubbing the rock and running down the hill. Called the most exciting 25 seconds in college football, I say it’s more than that. Exciting yes … but absorb and appreciate that you are in the midst of a life form. Our earth has plants, animals and the Clemson pregame crowd … three life forms. Get ready to be transformed!

Itinerary for first Clemson DV game

1

Sep 19, 2023, 1:06 PM

Just get seated and have an experience!

My advice is to worry about the next couple to three days.
1st day after - game hangover (as real as alcohol hangover!) Have Tylenol, ibuprofen and throat lozenge or spray. Rewatch game if we win! If we don't then blame yourself or anyone you took and never go back. (Its ok to hide shame of this nature)

2nd day after - possibly work so get ready to tell people stuff they did not see on tv (Looking at you Mr. Canon puller). Possibly just Tylenol and throat lozenge. Again if we won rewatch game.

3rd day after - ur voice should start to resemble a humans voice with a hint if puberty.

Also keep tickets and souvenirs, pics etc...

If we lose then let me please reiterate! Do Not Come Back To The Valley!

Have fun!

Yes, the stereotype holds true in my case. Alcohol will not be part of our itinerary, but we will be soaking up everything else!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not really a drinker myself, so I get it.

I believe a lot of visitor groups who come on here looking for advice tend to be on a guy's trip or a club gathering. Not quite as many families.

So the recommendations are from a different point of view.

Clemson is mostly family friendly on gameday, at least compared to other schools.

I don't drink either! Still expect a game hangover!

It is scientifically quantitative!

Seriously, have a wonderful time with the family! You will leave satisfied.

And if we lose don't come back! Lol

Lol! I must confess that the reason I'm coming to your game is because I am 0-5 on the road traveling with my own team. But I guess that means that the home team wins when I'm in the house!

My first game was last year.

significantly older than your kids, or even you.

My advice:

1. Get there as early as possible.
2. Walk around campus.
3. Go to the "downtown" area and walk through Judge Keller's store.
4. Walk through some parking lots and speak to some folks who are tailgating. Let them know it is your first game. Ask them for advice.
5. See the Tiger Walk.
6. Get into your seats early. Especially important for your kids. Let them watch the players warm up.
7. Definietely be in your seats before the players leave the locker room. Watch them leave, ride the bus around and get to the top of the hill. (It's on the big screen.)

They will definitely be pumped up and ready to kick off.

So cool that you are making this trip with your family. You will have a great time.

I agree with making Greenville your home base. Even if you could've gotten a hotel room in Clemson, I think Greenville is a better place to stay. Better hotels, better restaurants, more to do, etc.

If you haven't checked out downtown Greenville before, you must. It's very walkable, with tons of restaurants, shops, and public art. I'm assuming that some of the restaurants your friend recommended are downtown. Rick Erwin's West End Grille is my favorite, but there are many good ones.

Gameday in Clemson will be a fun experience. We love to tailgate, so you'll see many people arriving early for tailgating. If you want to tailgate, I'd recommend leaving Greenville by 8:00 AM. General admission parking will put you far away from the stadium, but the advantage is that you'll likely be able to see a lot of campus on your walk. Paid parking closer to the stadium will put you closer to donwtown Clemson, which you should absolutely check out. For souvenirs, Mr. Knickerbocker and Tiger Sports Shop are my favorites. For food and drink, The Esso Club is a Clemson institution that you have to check out.

Whichever bar(s) you choose, be sure to let them know that you're from Utah and traveled to see a Clemson game. I'm sure they take extra good care of you and will be more than happy to put the BYU game on one of the TVs.

I don't have a recommendation for high school football. This isn't a great year for South Carolina high school recruiting, so there are not any can't-miss five star prospects you need to see. The better teams this year in the region seem to be Hillcrest, Byrnes, and T.L. Hanna. Hillcrest plays at Wren this Friday, which isn't too far from Greenville if you want to watch a game.

Have a great time on your trip, and please post after the fact to let us know how it went!

Lots open at 6 this Saturday. Highly suggest you get into Clemson as early as possible. Small town and big game equal a traffic nightmare.

1) The earlier the better. No later than 7 AM.
2) If you don't mind walking, park a mile or two out of town. You might can even catch a CAT Bus. To get out of town quicker, you need to park out and walk. Check the City of Clemson website for more details on the Cat. Go out on 93 back to Greenville, not 123 or go up and take Scenic Hwy. 11.
Don't pay $40 to park. Hwy. 93 leads into Clemson and there should be some closed businesses or churches where you could park and walk for free. Take it from somebody that grew up in Clemson and used to walk to games from a little way out.
3) That is a good question.
4) Go to Riverside(Greer, SC) and catch the Daniel and Riverside game. Daniel is the High School closest to Clemson and you might can catch some of our coaches there watching the game.
5) Take a drive down Scenic Hwy. 11. It might be an alternative to avoid most of the traffic coming into and out of Clemson. GPS is your friend.

1) We're staying in Greenville (y'all booked all the hotels!) so what time should I leave Gville to get to Clemson in time to park and see a little bit before the game?

- no later than 9 if you want to see any of the pregame... its about a 35-40 minute drive normally but for noon games everyone is coming at once and its usually a mess... that was a no later than time...

2) Recommendations for parking? I don't mind paying or walking. Would rather not be blocked in for hours after the game because:

- would set this up as soon as you can, I would not chance it, hopefully others have recs for parking.g

3) Our BYU Cougars kick off at 3:30. Would there be a sports bar or something where we could watch the game and wait out traffic?

- ESSO club is across the street, not sure what is in downtown Clemson. Expect everything to be packed.

4) We wanna experience one of your HS football games Friday night. Can you recommend a great matchup in the general Gville area? Maybe two good teams, or a highly recruited player?

- no idea.

5) We've got our restaurants dialed in (my friend in Gville is a foodie but not a sports fan
- when do you get in town? Tons to do in Gville... where are you going to eat?

Thanks so much guys and if you ever wanna experience football in the mountains, come out for when BYU hosts Utah or Colorado and I'd love to show you around!

Next week regarding your trip to “the valley”. I’ll be very surprised if you aren’t speechless with the way you are greeted by Tiger fans.

Parking will likely be your only problem and I can only say good luck. Traffic will be a nightmare because you just can’t effectively park 80,000 plus fans in a small village.

You are in for the treat of your life. Wear

Please report next week and let us know how the weekend went for your family.
Greenville is a super city too!

Welcome to Clemson. Would love to have you and your family on my Pregame Show if you can get to Clemson prior to 9 AM. email me at scottrhymer.tps@gmail.com if interested.

A few responses

1) We're staying in Greenville (y'all booked all the hotels!) so what time should I leave Gville to get to Clemson in time to park and see a little bit before the game?
For a noon game in Clemson, especially your first time in Clemson, leave at 7 AM from Greenville so that you can get parked by 8:30 or 9:00 and can enjoy the campus and tailgates.

2) Recommendations for parking? I don't mind paying or walking. Would rather not be blocked in for hours after the game because
If you can buy a pass on Tigernet, do so. It's worth the money to be in a reserved lot. Otherwise, I suggest NewSpring Church area and ride the shuttle into campus.

3) Our BYU Cougars kick off at 3:30. Would there be a sports bar or something where we could watch the game and wait out traffic?
ESSO is a must and will have the game on. 500 yards from stadium. There will also be plenty of tv's in the lots from fans and you may be able to catch the game standing around with some Clemson fans in their tailgate area.

4) We wanna experience one of your HS football games Friday night. Can you recommend a great matchup in the general Gville area? Maybe two good teams, or a highly recruited player?
JL Mann at Wade Hampton or Daniel at Riverside.

5) We've got our restaurants dialed in (my friend in Gville is a foodie but not a sports fanThanks so much guys and if you ever wanna experience football in the mountains, come out for when BYU hosts Utah or Colorado and I'd love to show you around!
Falls Park and the Liberty Bridge is a must.
Southerside Brewery and Unity Park is great.
Main Street Greenville into the West End is a great walk with plenty of restaurants/bars/shopping

Any Clemson fan that is with a family in a tailgate will welcome you in for food and a drink. Just tell them you are from Utah and it's your first time in Death Valley. You will be treated like royalty...guaranteed!

Greenville is the best place to stay. Beautiful downtown area and great restaurants.
The traffic for the noon games is a nightmare. Everyone is coming around the same time unlike the later games. It can be so bad. Leave by 7:00 at the latest and earlier if possible.
The best parking is on College Avenue if you can get it. It’s free and the perfect place to park because you can walk up the street to all the stores and then go straight across the road to Tillman Hall. I’ve parked there on game day but you must get there very early to get it.

BYU

You have two choices as far as seeing your Cougars play at 3:30. Commit to the Esso Club after the game and get them to but BYU on one of the TVs or park at the Wendy's (or other establishment on Hwy 123) and walk through the neighborhood to the Esso Club. That way you will get out of Clemson & back to Gville fairly quickly.

I would suggest the first option - but you can still park out on 123 - easy parking and easy exit.

As some one who's been coming to Death Valley for decades as a visitor, I can tell you the biggest issue is parking. There just aren't that many lots open to the public. I usually end up parking on the golf course, which is a hike to the stadium. It's fun though as Clemson has the best tail gate scene in the ACC. The fans are always nice and accommodating. Get there as early as you can to soak in all the atmosphere.

Definitely go by the Esso station for a beer or two.

I'll be making a return trip in November and I can't wait.

1.) Traffic will be of a major concern on Game Day. Leave Greenville at least 4 hours prior to kickoff and expect bumper to bumper traffic off of I-85. Drive safe because some folks are already drinking alcohol from the evening prior.

2.) Parking is an ever-evolving problem/solution/problem again. If you have a parking pass, just find out where that lot is and where your space is. However, your best bet is to park off of campus and walk unfortunately. There's an abundance of ultra friendly people in the area and some have golf carts and will give you a ride. That's what makes Clemson stand out from everyone else in this world. There's also shuttle buses once you arrive on campus.

3. There's several places that are amazing to eat and watch a game. The ESSO Club is an amazing place and so is the Smoking Pig.... I highly recommend the brisket and ribs at the Smoking Pig. Also, don't forget to stop by the roadside boiled peanut concession stands on your way in. Those are some of the world's best boiled peanuts.

4. While I would recommend the Gaffney Indians, don't travel to Gaffney without a security team. That place is crazy.

5. If he's not taking you to Hall's Chophouse, then you're missing out. Also, Another Broken Egg has the world's best brunch.

You will have a great time! Like everyone has said, you will be invited to many tailgates if you just go up and introduce yourself. You should take Scott up on the Tiger Tailgate show. It is legendary! The Esso club will be crowded after the game, but it is fun. It was actually an old gas station years ago. I graduated in 1978 and it was there then! I live in Clemson ( my husband and I retired here) and I think you will probably find a spot if you drive down College Ave. it will cost you around $40. Have fun! Go Tigers!
