Additional travel costs for going to the Big 12.

I posted this last night, thought I would get your input this AM as well. A lot has been made of the additional travel costs incurred by jumping to the Big 12, but the difference for football would be negligible.
Just thinking this through. If Clemson still plays SCU, FSU, and WVU (who is no farther away than any ACC school) plus two other out of conference schools, then that leaves only six games that would be farther away than normal. If we assume that three of those would be home games in any given year, then we are only talking about three long road trips a year. Factor out the amount that would have been spent on travel to ACC road games anyway (Miami, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Boston would be long road trips requiring air travel) and the added travel for a Big 12 conference membership might be negligible (at least in football). Of course, the non-revenue sports would have to factor in. The 20 million ACC exit fee would pay for itself quickly with an extra 10-13 million dollar pay check each year. So, yeah, it’s doable. If Ga. Tech and Miami jump to the Big 12 along with Clemson and FSU to create an Eastern division then there is no problem at all.

Also the travel issue is more for the non-revenue sports that don't fly everywhere now.

Only three of those are in our division (given that we play GT every year). We are guaranteed at least one long ACC trip a year by plane vs an average of three long road trips a year in the Big 12. I don't think that the incremental cost would be prohibitive. Especially if we are talking 10 to 13 million more in revenue.

continue to compete in the same number of sports that SCU and our SEC rivals do. Will we be content to field a variety of mediocre sports teams, or do we focus our revenue on building a high quality football program. Perhaps we can't do both.

a make or break issue at all here...
If the right teams are available, the Big XII will go to 14 anyway. That puts FSU/WVU and any combination of GT/VT/UL/UM/KU/KSU/ISU in a division with us.

Costs/benefits/revenue. This is a purely financial decision and the fans should be talking more about the financial ramifications than any of these side issues.

any of the SEC or remaining ACC teams. If and when CU/FSU make a move to the Big XII the dominos will start to fall. There would be a Big XVI eastern block that would be better than the SEC Least...and have the potential to be on par or better than the SEC West.

Putting the soccer, baseball, tennis and track teams (both men and women) on a plane for every event will add up very quickly.
The travel costs for football and basketball will likely only increase a small amount. Its the other sports that make up the increases.

As I said, the non-revenue sports would have to be factored in. Is there away around this? I don't know. Would we be willing to reduce the number of non-revenue sports in order to increase revenues in other areas? Could we do that anyway and remain in the ACC? Ultimately the athletic department is going to do something to create more margin if the revenue generating sports are going to keep up with the competition.

I recall either an article or on a local sports talk show where GT estimated an increase of 8-10 million in travel expenses to go to the Big 10.
The Big East allowed teams to come in "football only" like SDSU because travel costs for other sports were too high to justify the move.
I don't think the increase in travel costs is something to just gloss over. Its significant, but so can be the revenue. I think you likely would have a reduction or at least a slow down of expansion of non-revenue sports. Either that or drastically change the way those sports are scheduled.

No its out of overall conference revenues. Thus a reduction in everyone's overall take from the conference.
Granted that policy benefits us more than Oklahoma, but this aint the government. It aint "free."
