New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

For the first time since December of 2014, when Brandon Streeter took over for Chad Morris, the Tigers are in search of a starting quarterback, and he told TigerNet recently that he can't wait to see the competition unfold in spring practice.

Sounds like Cooper is going to be the starter going into Fall. TL will be the starter the second he steps on campus

That's what it would appear to us fans, as I generally have

The same thought, but the coaches will make the best decision. Hopefully they all learned from the Cole Stoudt plan. A long way away, but I can see more than one QB playing in the Kent state game. Of any season, I'm glad we start out with a lesser opponent. Auburn at home is going to be HUGE.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's nothing to be learned from the Cole Stoudt plan

Jan 26, 2017, 10:28 AM

They handled that whole situation exactly as you would expect.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree, Stoudt was Streeter's first pupil, as DW4 was hurt

Jan 26, 2017, 1:51 PM

And look what Stoudt did in Bowl game, possibly Streeter was just what he needed?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Chad Morris didn't know what to do with Stoudt

Jan 26, 2017, 2:23 PM

Cole Stoudt was a decent passer when he was healthy, but he battled nagging injuries most of that season.

Chad Morris struggled to adapt the offense to Stoudt's strengths, nor did we have a good running game to take pressure off him.

I blame Chad Kelly for the problems we had that season. It was supposed to be his year, with DW4 redshirting, but he didn't want to grow up.

Don't know that TL will automatically be the starter with Johnson and Cooper still here. The good thing is, if he needs it a redshirt season will be ok.

Is TL going to be an early enrollee? If he enrolls in January, I'd be surprised if he redshirts even with all the talent we have. The guy is a beast, and if he comes in and really buckles down and learns the playbook, it's going to be difficult to keep him off the field.

If he doesn't arrive until summer, I expect he'll redshirt. Even if he doesn't officially redshirt, He'll likely be 3rd or 4th on the depth chart just due to likely not having as good knowledge of the playbook and due to all the talent already here.

Based upon what is actually involved unless we lose several QBs unexpectedly, I think it would mean TL will likely redshirt to train and study. Going from HS to college is difficult enough without having to confront fan expectations. He will start when staff believes he is prepared and can handle the responsibility.

Go Tigers!

Jan 27, 2017, 7:57 AM [ in reply to Re: TL isn't going to rs.*** ]

It would only make sense for TL to redshirt unless he decommits. You have Cooper who could be the starter for the next 2 or 3 years. Who knows how long Johnson/Brice are staying. Giving TL a RS would guarantee at least 2 years starting as opposed to only 1 year guarantee unless TL proves that he is better than Johnson. Our staff has shown favoritism towards seniority over talent.

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Jan 26, 2017, 1:12 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice ]

I believe that if DW4 would have Red Shirted his freshman year, he would have been bigger, stronger, and more ready to be a starter. Also, some of the injuries that DW4 had his freshman year may not have been as serious of an injury as they were. And he probably would have never had those injuries in the back of his mind and could have been better than he was. I just don't believe a freshman QB should ever be thrown in the fire until they have served a RS season. Many freshman QB's have had their careers ruined bc of playing to early at the college level. Some injuies and some of those hits that causes a flood of butterflies surrounding their head will cause them to re-act and pull trigger to early for 3 or 4 games, and with some for the rest of their career. It all depends on their pain tolerance and how tough they really are....

Yeah Right. Cooper will be the starter...

Jan 26, 2017, 9:28 AM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice ]

... is good enough to keep Trevor Lawrence on the bench his freshman year.

If we're already anointing Lawrence as the starter as a freshman then that doesn't bode well for next season.

I sincerely hope that our starter next year gives us the type of play we've become used to the last three years and makes Trevor Lawrence have to work hard to get on the field.

LOL, You should look at the # of 5 start QBs that never start a game at a school in the top 25, many of them transfer to another school after graduation or earlier. I think Pitt just got a 5 star xfer from SoCal.
Whoever starts this year, if they perform well and stay healthy is very likely to start next year.

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Jan 26, 2017, 8:16 AM

I hope a true competition takes place and the winner separates himself. There is no way Stoudt beat DW4 out in spring ball. They should go with the best, not just the most senior guy. Not worth losing a game or two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Jan 26, 2017, 8:25 AM

Stoudt probably didn't do anything to lose the job. Deshaun broke his collarbone and was out of spring practice awhile so that firmly planted Cole ahead. Cole was and still is a lot better passer than KB. Everyone loved Cole when he was Tajhs backup as he played well in mop up time. Obviously as the season wore on it became apparent who the better qb was and the coaches went with him when he was available

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And let's not forget we opened at Georgia

Jan 26, 2017, 8:44 AM

very few coaches are starting a true freshman in his first game in that environment. Different this year with a tune up game then home against Auburn. Whoever they feel is ready is the one who will start. Several may play that first game if the competition is close, even against Auburn

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And Lvl is a far cry from Ga both in atmosphere and quality.***

This comment isn't directed at you, JCH81.
Most people either aren't aware or have forgotten that Stoudt was hurt through most of the season. The difference between when he was hurt, Ga Tech, and after he had time to heal before the bowl game, was amazing. I think he gets a bum rap and gave everything he had to Clemson. He deserves better.

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Jan 26, 2017, 9:08 AM

Agreed. He played fairly well against Georgia just not spectacular. Obviously the Oklahoma game at the end of the year was probably the healthiest he was all season and we saw what he did

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. Stoudt was 16/29 for 144 yards, no TDs, and 1 INT.

Jan 26, 2017, 11:06 AM

Don't let the 16/29 fool you, 144 yards on 29 attempts is just 5 YPA which is terrible. His QBR in that game was 22.7 which is also pretty terrible.

Granted he had very limited attempts, but Watson threw for 59 yards on 2/4 passing with 1 TD and no picks in the same game. That's 14.8 YPA and a 93.5 QBR.

A QB will get hurt next year so 2+ QBs will get serious time

Jan 26, 2017, 9:16 AM

We have a lot of youth in the QB lineup and their bodies won't be able to take the hits like TB and DW took their Junior years. I think 2 QBs will get a lot of playing time in the fall.

Since he is not an early enrollee, he will without question redshirt. That's not a bad thing. It will be interesting to see it play out though.

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Jan 26, 2017, 10:45 AM

One thing I noticed that DW4 could pass on to the new guys, was his ability to diffuse a big hit. He knew just how to fold or give to make most big hits deflect off him. Other than a couple of targeted Bama hits... he would pop up adjust that collar and go again. That hit deflection tactic was a big part of his survival out there and hope it doesn't go unnoticed or untaught to the new guys... Go tigers

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

I loved the way he bounced off a big hit in the 4th quarter against 'Bama and heaved the ball out of bounds. Must have been just a tad frustrating for the Tide would-be tacklers.

Re: New Story: Streeter excited about watching QB competition unfold in spring practice

Jan 27, 2017, 12:36 PM

KB - Have we really seen him " get a chance to pass the football " no. If he picks up the offense and has no issues making the right reads then he is the guy. If not, try out for TE or DE because I think he would be good with his speed @ those spots! But, have to give him an honest opportunity since he has the most time in the system.
Zerrick Cooper - I am pulling for Mr. Cooper to get the job. Strong arm. Good athlete. Good size just like Kelly Bryant. Only going off H.S. film he seems to be a better passer than KB.
Tucker Israel - his 5'11 concerns me. But, he is a gamer! You can never count out someone because of stature. Only a concern, if he can or whomever can move the offense then that's who you go with.
Hunter Johnson and Chase Brice - Brice most likely will RS. Johnson has a real opportunity to start. Watching his video I like his decisions and I like his running ability. How quickly can he grasp the offense is the question.
The cup runs over @ QB! Which should make for a fierce competition. Through that competition one would think would emerge a player who is going to be able to move the ball when called on. Their won't be any resting on laurels either because the competition is so good behind whoever is named starter! CU will have some of the best back ups in America! Young/untested but talented nonetheless. Should be fun!
