Clemson May Have No Choice But To Jump To The SEC

Jul 28, 2021, 9:50 AM

First, I absolutely want to stay in the ACC and dominate the league for the next 10 years but I have doubts that the league as a whole can recruit competitively with these new super mergers.

If the ACC can't get at least 4 solid programs to compete at the highest level it's going to die.

Clemson will be fine for a while but with NIL and a ACC that is weak as hell we will start losing Top recruits that we would normally get to the NIL money league of the SEC. Stanford lost a QB to Alabama and that kid's already got a near 7 figure NIL deal and hasn't started a game.

I totally understand the GOR is good through 2036 but I have to think that could be challenged with the changes in NIL and Super conferences changing what will be broadcasted.

Clemson and FSU need to really look at the landscape and think about the long term future.

Maybe going to the ESPN masters and asking them to find a way to break the GOR so they can jump to the SEC.

The SEC is raiding the top revenue schools BECAUSE of Clemson

Jul 28, 2021, 9:54 AM

They don’t like us being a threat and will not want to see what Dabo can do at Clemson with SEC resources.

Agree with you both

Jul 28, 2021, 10:02 AM

To be the best, you have to beat the best, but I don't think the SEC wants us. Our only chance to beat the best may continue to be in the CFP.

If That Is True The Clemson Better Move Quickly

Jul 28, 2021, 10:04 AM [ in reply to The SEC is raiding the top revenue schools BECAUSE of Clemson ]

I've been all over the place on this issue. Part of me says wait it out but the David Shaw comment about Stanford losing a QB to SEC NIL money really gave me pause.

The ACC needs to be extremely proactive in making the league stronger or Clemson and FSU needs to get the hell out of Dodge.

Would inviting some of the Big 12 schools like TCU and Oklahoma State to the ACC work to get the Texas TV market?

As I said, the ACC needs a Hail Mary (No ND pun intended) to get this league competitive.

That may be true, but when you apply fort a position on Wall Street how hard of a decision is it to choose between a Stanford and Alabama graduate?

it will get scoffs from SEC fans

And you have no choice but to understand that it's not Clemson choice to jump to the SEC. The SEC has to extend the invitation to Clemson to join and then it has to be an unanimous vote of the other members.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah...I get that.

Jul 28, 2021, 10:08 AM

Seriously.

That you for making that abundantly clear as if we didn't know that.

Clemson controls its own destiny

Jul 28, 2021, 10:17 AM

Look, the ACC Network TV contract is atrocious and antiquated. It goes through 2036, so without a total overhaul (maybe new commissioner Phillips can do that?) we aren't going to be able to entice other teams to leave for the ACC.

Consequently, the usage rights is a huge gap for us----TX & OK basically have a fee to leave the BIG12 early, but it's little more than an entry fee.
We, on the other hand, can't just "afford" to leave & pay for the penalty inherent to the ACC Network contract, even with IPTAY.

I digress; the bottom line is Clemson's recent success IS enough. It means we won't/can't be left behind. So we don't have to worry about that.

But change is coming. I think it's OK to celebrate it, too. One thing I'm certain of, whatever changes are in store for Clemson will absolutely create more revenue & more big game matchups which means better opportunities for awards like the Heisman and more.

It's going to be very hard to entice any new school that has to give up media rights until 2036 given the fluid nature of college football. This is where the lawyers come in to challenge contracts.

Clemson will be fine for a while. With that said, if the ACC doesn't get stronger Clemson may have to make some hard decisions.

Swofford was a fool for agreeing to a 20-year television contract.

Who the helllll signs a 20 year TV sports contract w/o a renogiation clause? And what teams sign such to abide by such a contract? Shows complete lack of leadership among ACC AD's, College Presidents, and BOT.

The GOR contract schools signed was based on what the landscape in college FB was several years ago. That landscape has changed drastically with NIL, SEC expansion, players union, etc. A good attorney can get that contract thrown out. I am sure there are clauses in the contract that give both the league and the schools the right to terminate the contract based on certain factors. As time passes and conditions change, no contract is etched in stone.

Re: Clemson controls its own destiny

Jul 28, 2021, 11:17 AM

I wish that were true, or it was as simple as that.

The reality is now the ACC has to find a loophole in the contract.

Contracts are "made to be broken," but this one was so bad & goes on for so long & has EXPLICIT provisions against leaving early.

The BIG12, for example, those teams like TX & OK simply pay a fine, essentially (they can afford it, too).

Ours is not nearly so simple, and the penalty is astronomically worse.

It was a horrible contract, but we'll need all the help we can get to change it or get out of it. In all sincerity, the SEC might be the only option that can even come close, but it's likely not close enough. Taking care of the contract first is vital.

A unanimous vote of the other members is not required.

That is wrong The procedure is a school contacts a conference and and states that they are interested in joining. That is the first step.

First step is the school must approach a conference and state that they are interested in joining. The conference does not extend an invitation. that is an agreement the conferences have.

It's interesting to think about, but does the TX/OK to SEC stuff happen if the ACC didn't first call them up months ago about joining the ACC?

Actually I don’t think it has to be unanimous any longer. Just no more than 4 against.

Re: Clemson May Have No Choice But To Jump To The SEC

I agree. I think the ACC is in a precarious position. I believe we are headed to 2-3 conferences. The SEC and Big-10 have good TV deals. I could see Big taking cream of PAC 12 and SEC taking creme of ACC. Then you basically have a AFC- NFC situation. Another factor is the competition between ESPN and Fox.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ESPN vs FOX

Jul 28, 2021, 11:19 AM

I completely agree with this.

Make no mistake, the SEC & ACC Networks being under the same ESPN umbrella is a tremendous renegotiation advantage for the ACC over other leagues. It may ultimately come down to this outright.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nailed it. I agree with everything you said and

Jul 28, 2021, 11:21 AM

would also love to stay in the ACC and operate from the position we have been during this great run. Howver, just like you said, that may no longer offer the same abilities ot recruit and compete. I feel if Notre Dame would join and then we pick up West Virginia, we'd be ok. Bt it does not look like that is going to happen.

The problem with the fact that we may have no choice but to compete in the SEC is that we may not get an invite from the SEC and if we do, the GOR will likely prevent us from going.
