The times I saw him around Clemson he always looked like he could still play even though he was well into his 40's then. The story of how he got there is amazing

Fullback Fred Cone on a full spinner with pulling guard Frank Gillespie running a trap was a lot more than most anybody could handle much less Jerry Clower. LMAO Mr Cone was also a kind and gentle person and had a smile ans helping hand for everyone. May God bless and comfort the family. Rejoice in a life well lived.

Yes, RIP and condolences to the family. I met Fred around 64-65 in the football players "weight room" at Fike. It was a Universal machine and a few free weights at the corner of the basketball court, and Fred was in great shape easily moving the entire stack for countless reps on the bench. So growing up in Clemson, I knew his kids and simply knew that he played at Clemson and for the Packers. End of my immediate knowledge of Fred until about 3 years ago. I met an elderly gentleman at the Clemson Downs Nursing home that was also local had been friends with Fred for many years. He told me the story of Fred getting an invite to the team sight unseen based on a phone call from Frank Howard's sister - generally matching the TNET article. Article left out one funny detail. When Fred arrived in Clemson he headed out to the practice field where the team was going through some drills. Introduced himself to Coach Howard who them told him to head up to the locker room, get fitted for a practice uniform, and come back out on the field. When Fred arrived back in full gear, Howard took him to the end of the field along with two of his best linebackers. Explained the drill. Going to toss you the ball here and want you to cross the goal line through these 2 tacklers. OK. Told the backers to not let him cross and knock him on his rear. Tossed him the ball and he went straight through/over the two defenders into the end zone. No, no, no. I told you boys to stop him - get him on the ground and don't let him cross. Fred repeated the exercise and left the two defenders on their rear end. End of drill. Howard turned to Fred and said go the the registration office, get enrolled, and tell them I said that your on the football team. So, I guess he was tentatively on the team but since he had never played in a high school game, and there was absolutely no scouting information, Howard was obviously more than curious. The rest was history.

A man I wished to know. My dad said he was one of the best he ever saw running. I salute his memory that will always be enshrined in Tigers lore. Well done good and faithful…….
