Transfer portal, opt outs have made bowl games meaningless.

Playing a 3rd team quarterback, an offensive line with backups, all freshman defensive backs, etc - tells us absolutely nothing about which program is better in bowl games. It is the luck of the draw who is actually playing.
Navy lost no one - for obvious reasons. Thus they played well as a team with their top players.
Bowl games used to tell us a lot - now, absolutely nothing.

Playoff teams are different, but even those have some players leaving to portal.

College football is just not what it was. (I know, Germans.)

There hasn’t been any opt outs I’ve seen now that the players are paid. What you’re referring to is transfer portal players. We have to keep the window closed until spring. That will stop the transfers from jumping off before all games are played. The announcers went in depth on this issue last night in the Syracuse Wazzou game.

They will still opt out until the portal opens, IMO. The quitters will quit regardless of the portal opening.

The NCAA can't do that as long as the athletes are students.

Students, including athletes, can leave school whenever they want.

If or when they get picked up by another school is immaterial to them not playing in the post season.

The problem with that is that it does not give time to get players acclimated to their new teams. Maybe open 1st or 2nd week in January but not before bowl season.

The number of transfers at some of these schools is staggering. They would need to pay me a little more money to worry about the ebb and flow of my roster under the current rules.

So how do you propose we work around the school
Schedule? Remember 99% of these players are students first.

Make no mistake, zero starters or entered the portal on playoff teams. Air Noland is the big name but he would have never seen the field. There were one or two that saw some time in games but no bonafide game changers. Most are deep down the depth charts and better players entered after the losses.

Are you are an unhappy person all the time or just when you dwell on football changes that do not suit you? There are reasons football teams have subs and that is no player is immune from injury and players have choices of playing or not. There were good, exciting games all year and the Bowl season is no different and guess what, nobody on those teams cared if the guy beside was a 5* or a 2* and you may be shocked to know that each team had 11 players on the field at a time.

Take your blinders off and enjoy the games because when the ball is kicked off, football is football.

Disagree Valley… be nice to see the same team that earned the right to play in the bowl play an evenly matched opponent for bragging rights. Not sure what I have seen so far could be classified as good and that includes the playoffs.

QB’s making first starts don’t blend itself to good football. Maybe your expectations are just a lot lower than mine.

I'd agree that using bowl games to determine which team is better is less reliable than it once was. But, I don't see teams playing 2nd and 3rd teamers, players likley to assume an increased role the following season, as meaningless.

The playoff committee did that when they screwed FSU out of a playoff spot they earned last season.

The bowls were meaningless once the playoff came around and opt outs aren't even the most major factor. They opt out mainly because those bowls are meaningless and they don't want to get hurt playing in a meaningless bowl.

The fact that so many ######### now refer to anything outside the playoff as “meaningless” is the problem.

I love this time of year. Bowl games on a Tuesday at 2pm. Doesn't matter to me who is playing, I watch. I think the games are fun and meaningul to the fan bases. Last year neither Clemson nor UGA were in the playoffs. I can't imagine those fanbases thought the bowls those teams were in were meaningless. There is a simple solution for people who think there are too many bowl games - don't watch.

If the practices are beneficial, the bowl game is a plus. Hard to see placing no value on more practice for the younger players.

They only ever as meaningful as teams made them anyway. The gator bowl trophy ain’t worth that much in and of itself.

If it’s that meaningless then stay home. Otherwise show up and play with pride. Use the practices to develop younger players. You can only get better with more games and experience.

The attitude that certain bowl games are meaningless is what has grown and that is a shame.

every one of them sort of validated the season to an extent. I think, going forward, you will see bonuses for coaches based on bowl wins go away. I mean, who cares if you beat a team that just had their starting QB,tailback, best corner guy,and a couple of dlinemen or olinemen opt out.
