5 Games into the Season, What's our identity?

1

Sep 30, 2023, 5:45 PM

I'm at a loss. We still have turnovers, special teams is still struggling, and the defense continues to miss tackles. Our defense is not a shut down defense but does enough to keep us in a position to win. Our offense hasn't shown the ability to use the run to control a game. Cade is getting better and has shown us he can hit big throws under pressure. But what is it?

What do you all say?

I’m not sure, but today we were the most well rounded I’ve seen yet.

I’d say the identity is : a work in progress

No, actually our offense played a lot better last week vs better defensive personnel. Last week we actually had higher top and only 4 punts. Our scoring drives were longer.

I think when you go back and look at the tape, we had very short fields. Cade made some beautiful scrambling plays and brown bailed him out not giving up on routes. But overall we were a lot smoother last week than this week.

We're definitely a work in progress. We'll have some great games but we'll probably lose some too.

We are Klub, Brown, don't turn it over and keep everything in front of us on defense. Any pressure we get is gravy. I think/hope the pressure ratio is going to start going up though. Just a hunch.

To me its straightforward

Balanced offense that is learning how to reduce buffoonish plays and an OC trying to figure out personnel. Solid defense in top ten I believe. Failure on special teams.
Also, an odd mix of youth and veterans trying to be a team and getting there. Just taking a while for our patience.

I would agree we have shown "Balance" on offense. What would you say about our Defense?

I think the defense looks too 10 as usual. One thing I noticed is it seems like the young guys (Parker, Woods, Mascoll) get better pressure than the older guys.

Mascoll is a 6th year guy. XT might be the only guy in the defense that is older 😂😂

I had no idea Mascoll was a 6th year guy 😂😂

I was hoping it would be "Pressure" from our defensive line and LB's with the secondary being solid shutting teams out. Overall I think we have played well but not consistent. Pressure at times but soft at other times. Still trying to figure out who they are at this point.

Define “shut down defense.” We’ve given up 104 points this season, and 50 of those points have been from the offense either giving up a score or putting the defense on our side of the field.

Almost 50% of the points scored against us this season are from the offense giving the ball away. 50%. I get turnovers are part of the game, but that’s insane. Teams are averaging 21ppg against us, but 10 of those are from the offense giving the ball away (points off turnovers / games played).

The D averages 11ppg given up when the offense doesn’t give the ball away. Not sure how much more shut down you want.

You are correct, overall the stats show a great defense. My frustration is with the poor tackling, the soft play at times (end of half last week), having a team on the ropes and giving of a long drive with a 2nd and 20 to keep them in the game. I want to see a team the finishes. pI.m probably just not adjusting to the now versus the past very well.

Fast, relentless, talented attacking defense and scheme.

Balanced, ball control offense that finds weaknesses but lacks the skill speed to take full advantage of opportunities. Talented young athletic QB improving each game gives this team opportunities in the short and long term as it continues to recruit and develop explosive skill.

Our defensive and offensive schemes allow talented youth to shine early.

GET RID OF THE TURNOVERS, and this is a 5 - 0 team.***

This is probably the most intelligent question on the board

Offensively we are not sure. We show flashes of greatness but we keep doing dumb stuff. I think the skill positions are getting better each week and I am all in on Cade. Oline is not good or aggressive. Defensively we have studs all over the field but a dud at dc. He is 3 steps behind, all of our studs are keeping us even.

Thank you. I love these kind of discussions. I would agree with your assessment. I'm all in on cade too. He'll get better (I hope) at reading D. Both pressure and understanding what throws he can make. Several could have been intercepted today. I actually think he managed the game last week better.

He can make the throws.

As to the original question, I think we felt our oline would be better. Missing Parks, perhaps. I also think GR thought he had a stud Tight End or two. So far we don't. It'll be great to get Williams back. Hopefully stellato continues to grow because he fights for the catch.

Tell me if I'm off base because I'm still trying to learn. We had 4 punts last week and 6 this week. Sustainability against weaker opponents.

Work in progress in which you hope sticks together at least on O with Cade so next year and the year after it’s a seasoned offense ready to go.

I already considered this the growing pains year after last week.

Dude chill out.

Our identity is we have a team full of young men, lots of them 18 or 19 years old, getting better every week.

If you want one word for our identity, it is “improving”.

I'd say we are a very good rushing D with some playmakers in coverage. Our D is pretty dang good. One of the best in the country imo. Our O is becoming pretty balance and I believe slowly turning into the Cade show with his play extending ability with a splash of some big plays by the 2 headed backfield. Still too much misdirection play calls that do not work. I would say our identity is a top 5 team with no kicker and a turnover machine on O sadly tho.
