Not that I was a great X and O guy, but I learned a lot from the head coach who was knowledgeable about the game.

I watched NCSU last night and tonight. And, I will guarantee you that our defensive game plan against NCSU would have included - Any time the big guy puts the ball on the floor a double team is coming and coming quick. And, it would come from the top side making him pick up his dribble or having it slapped away.

I don't understand how you can have four guys standing around watching a big man take four dribbles and back his defender under the basket.

Makes a lot of sense. The defender would have to anticipate a pass as Burns is very good at hitting the open man and react quickly to defend the open man.

The tough part of the coaching would be to...

... explain the rotation. Who would double the guy, and where would the other three guys go when the double team came. You don't just leave the man who was guarded by the guy who went for the double team alone.

I'm not near smart enough to figure all that out. But, I am smart enough to know you don't just let a big guy back his way to the point of the basket and get layup after layup.

Those concepts should be trained in practice

I’m a soccer guy and have coached high school aged club players after I played at Clemson.

There are alignments and strategies, and when players come on the field, they know which role they are playing and should be able to determine situational play … both offensive and defensive … based on who has the ball and the instructions of the coach for that game, half, or based on situational communication from the coach.

If everyone is not on the same page and they don’t understand and execute their role, the team will likely not achieve the success they want.

Is that happening for Clemson Basketball? I don’t see that understanding and cohesion like I have seen it watching conference tournament games this weekend.
