Economics Theorists: By what year will the quarterback make more than the head coach at the school?
(My thoughts): 2028
Legal Theorists: How will employment status of college athletes impact their legal claims with eventual CTE?
My own analysis says this will be a problem for the school in terms of insurance and workers comp claims. The NFL has navigated this well,
but from what I gather they have lobbied to keep OSHA out of the sport?
TigerNet Fanbase: what is the break/even point for cutting the cord and stop watching college football? 500K/player (because it looks like it
will eventually be here.)
Personally I like the idea of players making above the table money so they can buy more things and become property owners at young ages.
Last questions: is anyone scared of private equity coming in to run Clemson's sports programs? How will this impact baseball/soccer?

I’m getting close. I stopped watching the NBA decades ago. Only watch most NFL games when they get to final four. I prefer amateur sports but that’s no longer college sports. I’ll give them a couple of years to figure it out, but they better do it quickly.
To stay competitive, Clemson must play the game like the big boys.

Well, maybe not since I haven’t specifically researched that point. But several D1 QBs make more than some HCs and coordinators (at other schools at least), and they make more than some starting NFL QBs.

Haven’t had time to do much research on the matter, but I did find that no D1 QBs make more than their HC at present. So to answer the OP, it will probably happen within the next 5 years. So 2030 maybe.
But I’ve heard that CK2 will make $3 million next year. That’s far more than any coach on staff not named Dabo. Arch Manning makes $3.1 for keeping the bench warm at Texas. Most NFL starters don’t make that. For example, Brock Purdy makes about $1 million at SF.

Most NFL starters don’t make that.
That's not accurate. Only 4 true starters in the NFL make less than $5m.
3 of the 4 are on their rookie contracts, the other is Russell Wilson who has already made 10s of millions.
The average salary for NFL QB starters is $32M. AVERAGE.

Blue Jay, you may be right. When I said most NFL starting quarterbacks don’t make $3 million, I was in error. Thanks for pointing it out.
Here is a link to all NFL quarterbacks’ salaries (far right column). I’m not sure which ones are true starters for all the teams. Maybe I should have said several (many perhaps?) starters don’t make that. Certainly most backups.
The problem with giving an average is that the 8 or 10 top level guys skew it big time. It would be better to give a median. I’m just out of town with a large group and haven’t had time to flesh it out yet.
My point stands, however, that college quarterbacks and other top performers are making millions, even more than NFL players. I want college athletes to be paid, but this amount is not what I had in mind. It’s ruining the sport.

I yield to the master. But according to the link I posted, aren’t several starters making under $3 million whether they are under rookie contracts or not? Not trying to debate, just asking.
You have clearly done your research on the topic. I was mostly regurgitating what I heard on podcasts from people I thought were informed more than I.

Interesting thoughts. I think the aspect of student athletes becoming employee opens up a can or worms most people, the athletes included, have not fully contemplated. Case in point is your CTE claims, I had not even considered that yet but it could be an issue one day
I will respond to your questions in order
1. I think its already happened most likely and if it hasn't it will be next year.
2. Employment of the student-athletes is a massive bailiwick to unpack. CTE is a big one for universities to limit their future liabilities. If athletes became employees I would imagine the quickest way to limit CTE liability would be to have each one sign a waiver stating the understand the risks and playing football is risky and could result in CTE or the like. Without it insurance would become cost prohibitive for most universities
3. I like that players are getting paid. Now I would like some agreed upon guidelines that attempts to keep a somewhat level playing field and I would like to see it tied to academic success of the individual. But in terms of the breaking point, I don't have a specific $ amount but its coming with the way things are headed. If we get to a point where your 3rd DB is making more than 99% of the fan base annually we have a big problem and the toilet bowl syndrome could start
4. I think PE would be the absolute worst thing for college sports but the possibility of it is very real. Like I'm sure others here have, I've worked with PE before and they will grin f-- you. Like all PE's they will quickly find what isn't profitable and find ways to shut it down or choke it out. Olympic sports could be on the chopping block quickly

CTE - how is this current handled at the college level? Without employment contracts with the schools, I wouldn't think this would change. They might come after the NIL collectives.
My break/even point has occurred naturally. Without giving it much thought, I've already lost much of my connection to the Clemson sport teams - as I realize they are just here because we outbid someone else. (If I was a Michigan/Oregon grad - I suspect I would already be gone.)
I do like money flowing from the haves to the have nots - but it's still hurting my "school spirit" connection...

Joeyb: that's my question as well? How is this currently handled? For so long players didn't know that they were getting CTE from football. Is there a waiver, now? If the players become "employees" they can file workers comp claims for nearly every play in football.
I don't enjoy college sports as much either, but I think most of it is from just getting wiser and thinking there is more to life than Clemson sports, lol.
Money flows: thousands of young men and women are going to become millionaires. That has some potential challenges, but in America we should be allowed to capitalize on our talents (I know half of tiger net does not agree).
Private equity seems terrifying to me. Like we are falling into a trap.

about CTE and college athletes. I'm surprised a school hasn't been sued already.
Maybe I'll snap out of it. A Tiger football game is like a family/friends reunion to me. But I'm quickly sliding into feeling like I'm cheering for high priced laundry.

I am CTE_Tiger because I think we need to be atleast aware of the potential ramifications of CTE and our student-athletes who partake in tackle football.
It is a handle that I will one day be prophetic as I think the sport is headed toward flag within the next 20-50 years. The research is getting more and more conclusive that tackle football is bad for you brain. It probably shouldn't take a bunch of Boston U and Harvard scientist to figure this out ... most 4-6 year olds probably intuitively know it is not good for your head to hit it.
I also might have some CTE from my playing days. So my thinking could not always be crystal clear, lol.

There are over 350 concussion lawsuits that are being consolidated into a class-action against dozens of schools. This happened to the NFL and did very little to impact the way the game was played. However, if the college players get into a different employee-employer relationship (than the NFL), I could see this situation changing in a hurry.

I disagree with that completely. There have been tons of rule changes to protect players. They completely revamped the kickoff, put in all sorts of protections for hits to defenseless players, removed crack-back blocks, allowed the use of guardian helmets, instituted mandatory concussion testing DURING the game if an independent consultant deems someone may have one, etc etc.

IMO kids need to learn from their parents and grandparents on how to accomplish and build a successful life through hard work.
NIL and revenue sharing is basically giving it to these kids. The younger generation is becoming more and more entitled. They expect to start out with new cars a big house and nice furniture. They need to earn it !!! Not have handed to them !!!

and moral character who represent our University, football program and student body well. As long as Clemson continues to do that I will continue my support. When and if we lose our way it's possible I might become disenfranchised with Clemson football but since I expect Dabo to be coaching at Clemson long after I'm dead I don't expect any change.
I have believed college players should be compensated for the work, dedication and allegiance to Clemson sports since the mid 1980's when I was a student. I never imagined it would go this far but I consider this situation more virtuous than the situation our guys were in during that era.
You may consider this my notice. While I haven't been, in general, a college football fan for almost a decade I intend to remain a fan of Clemson football until I turn 10 toes up and my body grows cold.
