The current roster (2025) lists 106 players, 55 of which are flagged as RS (red shirts), that's 52% of that roster! So how does this stuff work? The RS designation is a leftover from 2024, changes to be made? Or that is the status of of 2025 roster? I have the confuse.

If you redshirt, you are listed as a redshirt forever. For example a redshirt junior might have taken the redshirt his freshman year.

Those redshirts will add quantity and quality to our signing class for the next year which should ease the fears of some who are saying our recruiting is going downhill.

WE even have one gray shirt. That 5 star kicker that will be in school next year but not part of the team until 2026.

Generally speaking...
In NCAA football, redshirting allows student-athletes to extend their eligibility by not participating in more than a specified number of games in a given season. This strategy provides players with additional time to develop physically and academically without losing a year of competition.
Key Aspects of Redshirting:
Eligibility Extension: Athletes have five calendar years to complete four seasons of competition. A redshirt year preserves a season of eligibility, effectively extending an athlete's career span.
Participation Limits: As of the 2024 season, players can participate in up to four regular-season games without forfeiting their redshirt status. Notably, postseason games—including conference championships, bowl games, and College Football Playoff (CFP) matches—no longer count toward this four-game limit. This change means a player could potentially appear in up to nine games (four regular-season and up to five postseason games) and still maintain redshirt status.
A Medical Redshirt (Medical Hardship Waiver): If a player sustains a season-ending injury within the first 30% of the season and hasn't participated in more than three games, they may apply for a medical redshirt, allowing them to retain that year of eligibility.
Academic Redshirt: Implemented in 2016, this status applies to incoming athletes who meet a school's admission criteria but fall short of NCAA academic requirements. These athletes can practice with the team and receive scholarships but cannot compete in games during their first year. To gain full eligibility in their second year, they must complete at least nine academic credit hours in their first semester.
Other 'Shirting' Terms:
Grayshirt: An athlete delays full-time enrollment and does not participate in team activities or receive a scholarship during their first semester, preserving eligibility for future seasons. Blueshirt: A non-recruited walk-on athlete who joins the team and can receive a scholarship after enrolling; their scholarship counts toward the following year's quota.
Redshirting offers strategic benefits, allowing athletes to develop skills and adapt to collegiate academics, while providing teams with roster flexibility.
So once you understand this you can understand why there are so many red shirts. They are all players that have extended their ability to play out to 5 years by not playing full seasons somewhere in there.

I wouldn’t count much at all on last years recruiting class. It finished ranked in the mid 30s with a bunch of 3 star projects. That class will come back to haunt us big time!
