2024 Offense question

Nov 7, 2023, 8:36 AM

I’m wondering what you guys think about the offense moving forward. This year hasn’t been even close to what I think many people imagined. I saw a stay where the offense is ranked in the 100’s in either explosive plays or yards per play. Maybe both. That isn’t what Riley signed up for.

IMO, the problem is literally everything. Cade isn’t there yet. His issues are obvious. The line was better against ND, but they had to simplify it and go away from the Riley offense a bit. And maybe the biggest issue is at WR. Brown had flashed, but there isn’t much other than him.

So what does Dabo do? Does he go into 24 with the same guys and pray that he hits big on one of the freshman at WR? Can he risk that?

I heard on the radio Dabo out everyone on notice, players and coaches. I think he knows what he has to do and will he will do it. I think he brings in big time talent from the portal at WR and OL. Maybe a QB and RB. It’s been 3 straight years of struggle on offense and I bet he is sick and tired of it.

This year has taken a toll on him IMO. I see wholesale changes on his roster and coaching staff. He didn’t say buy stock in Clemson for nothing. He is going to fix it.

Dabo will make substantial changes.

What changes? We can only guess at this point.

But we will not enter next season with the same toolbox we have now.

Will be interesting what changes are made in offseason if any. Bringing back all starters but Putnam. Two big time WRs coming in next year. Curious to see if Shipley goes pro or if he stays Mafah transfers. Obviously the offense needs to improve but wonder if an offseason with all these guys and Riley can get it done.

I think it starts with bringing Jeff Scott back in the fold as maybe Asst. HC, WR coach, and recruiting coordinator. Whatever it takes to get him back on the staff, do it. I think 2 WRs from the portal that can come in and give you a big play threat on the outside is priority 2.

I do not see any way the program can get away with another year of Collins, Stellato, Randall etc. You have to get better at WR.

Depends on who we return next year.

Cade flashes his potential. I want to believe that he will be much better next year.
I doubt we return both Shipley and Mafah. RB2 will be Haynes or Eziomume.
We still need a game changer at WR. Randall needs to finally develop.
Getting Briningstool back would be great. OPH will be a factor.
We return Parks, Tate, Leigh, Miller, Sadler, and Sewell. That is a solid top 6 at OL.

Do we replace any coaches? Grisham and Austin have to be on the hot seat.
I still believe Riley is one of the best young minds in football.

I'll stay cautiously optimistic.

Dabo was really pleased with the job Austin did last week.... and said so publicly. That doesn't sound like he's considering a change.

So one week out of nine? And that was with two forced changes due to injury?

Thomas Austin isn’t goin anywhere I’d bet anything on it, even if the line plays the rest of the way like they did prior to ND… he’s made it clear in many interviews how much of a leader he is and reiterated how this is really his first recruiting class and it’s got a lot of talent in it… Grisham is the one that may be gone that group has just regressed so badly whether it’s talent or development it’s a prob that needs fixed… to the OP I believe cade can be the guy and needs to just get stronger. He will def be a better qb next year naturally but I believe he needs to get alot stronger bc the qb run threat in this offense is def missing and it shows… he’s just not big enough or strong enough to be a threat there yet. He seems very indecisive in that aspect.

How so? Looked like they had to dumb down the whole thing because we don’t have the players to run his offense. It was like in 21 when they went ultra conservative just to try and get to 10 wins. It worked in 21, and it worked Saturday.

I think it depends on the how these next 3-4 games go. The O and Cade played a decent game last week. But are still turning the ball over. However, was the ND game a "one off" or a "take off".

Also, if we go into Columbia and lay an egg, you got the think he has to make some changes. Who knows what changes.

I don’t see how you go into the Georgia game next year with the same staff, same players, (add the 2 freshman WR) and Cade playing like he has so far, and expect to win.

That game is huge for Dabo and the perception of the program. I think if they add help to the offense through the portal, combined with the freshman, they might can win. Look at FSU and Louisville. It doesn’t need to be that drastic, but it’s necessary because the pieces already here aren’t developing fast enough on offense.

What a difference half a season makes...

Remember when we were wondering where Riley would go be a head coach after we won the National Championship? I think he's too big of an OC hire with the media and hype to get the blame and take the fall. I also think he would like to correct the problems and bolster the resume at Clemson before taking a midlevel hire. I see OL improvements that's not only bringing in a better coach but a better recruiter as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it stopped there. WR's may get a shake up.
The question is if Clemson runs the table will they scale back on changes they would make today? I think we need to identify weakness and improve no matter the record. You can always get better.

I don’t think winning out erases the glaring issues and problems on offense. There is a 3 year sample size of terrible offensive play that a few wins don’t cover up. The offense has literally kept Clemson out of the playoffs the last 3 years.

Wes Goodwin is proving himself this year. The defense in 23 is elite IMO. And the young talent is awesome.

I think it’s time to bring in experienced, proven coaches on offense and playmakers from the portal so they can get back to being Clemson.

Not sure what big time receiver will be available in the portal but do we have the money to out bid Fsu, Oklahoma, S. Cal., Bama and the list continues. I think the Offense will be better if the ol is better.
