2014 loss to GT, who do you blame more? Stoudt or Morris

Jul 29, 2016, 2:49 PM

Both were complicit, but I think I blame Stoudt more. I personally think you could blame Morris for the play calling that got Watson hurt. Even though it was a non-contact injury, it was DW4's first game back from the hand injury. Chad was calling Zone read/ QB runs like Watson was some sort of battering ram that 1st Qtr. He should have diversified the play calling more and eased Watson into the the running game after such a lengthy layoff. I would guess that a significantly increased workload after an extended layoff could lead to non-contact injuries. Either way Watson wouldn't have made it through the game healthy regardless with that game plan. You could also say Morris didn't do a good job of having Cole ready to play in case his number was called.

Cole on the other hand was in complete "F.. it mode" because he thought his senior year was over once Watson was renamed the starter. He clearly didn't prepare himself to play and it was obvious once he got on the field. We definitely have some demons in Atlanta we need to exorcise. Watson will also have to overcome his own mental hurdle playing there.

Screw Calford.

It wasn't the play calling that got DW4 hurt

Jul 29, 2016, 2:56 PM

Non-contact injury so he could have just been dropping back and had it happen.

Floating those passes out was Cole's problem, but you'd think the Chad would know Cole's limitations. Still, those were supposed to be "safe" passes.

Hindsight is what it is but Chad was never one to really run the ball so it's spilt milk as far as I'm concerned.

I thought Stoudt was playing with a lot of pain/injured as

Jul 29, 2016, 2:57 PM

well. I thought I recalled that they were pumping him with pain meds?

Not sure it is fair to say that Stoudt was in F-it mode.

He was, he couldn't practice during the week because of it.***

I don't remember a lot of the particulars of that game but I do know that many tigernetters were really disappointed when Morris left the Tiger program. Last year at this time many were concerned about TWO inexperienced guys being named co coordinators and feared our chance for a good offense was gone. That worked out pretty good for the guys in orange didn't it? Good move Coach Dabo. I bet we see more improvement this year.... especially in the defensive backfield. I'm feeling good in early August right now. More so than last year

I was a big fan of theChad's. He still has one...

Jul 29, 2016, 3:42 PM

of if not my favorite, all-time quotes, "this ain't happiness camp", when talking about players' feelings and/or getting them ready during fall practice.

I think he's a top notch coach, would love to play for him, but with all that said, he never delivered on a commitment that was finally realized last year under Scott & Elliot - the smash-mouth spread.

There are a lot of "reasons/excuses" people can bandy about, but mostly I thought theChad got overly enamored with the downfield game at times and his own play calling at other times. You have to have a real, sincere desire to run the ball and I think that's what Chad lacked at times.

When a senior on the team says the running backs felt spit on, it's hard not to take notice and it starts at the OC.

Anyway, I'll always pull for theChad and remember how many mocked hiring an OC from Tulsa only one year removed from HS. He was what Clemson needed at the time and has a lot to do with Clemson's current success.

Cole was playing with an injured shoulder. And his mechanics were shot all to ####.

No issue with the play calls for DW4. It was a non contact injury; nothing you could've done differently there. Plus, it was working.

It's the Clemson offense, it's what we do, the QB's going to

Jul 29, 2016, 3:04 PM

run & is going to get hit. It's football, it's a contact sport - you can't call plays scared.

I don't blame Stoudt or Morris

Jul 29, 2016, 3:17 PM

I'm sure Stoudt and Morris wanted to win the game even more than us fans. Seems like I remember Stoudt was coming off an injury himself and had limited practice time. GT prepared well and won the game. GT controlled the clock on offense and we couldn't find any consistency. Although I was letdown by not as many Clemson fans showing up as I expected, we had a decent crowd (probably 20%-25% Clemson, with some empty seats remaining by the way) and they took us out of the game too. Sometimes, we just have to congratulate the other team on playing a good game and move on. :|

The GT player just guessed right and made a great play ...

Jul 29, 2016, 3:28 PM

... on the throwback pass at the goal line.

Maybe Morris shouldn't have called it ... maybe Cole shouldn't have thrown it. But it was obvious that the GT defense read it perfectly before the snap.

That was a 14-point turn-around and nobody on the team ... players, coaches (or fans) recovered after that.

The loss was a total "team effort" once the ### broke lose following that initial unfortunate play.

I was at the game and we were dominating them before DW went down.
Coles first pass was a GT TD and you knew it was over.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think Morris was pliable to change

Jul 29, 2016, 3:52 PM

for the staff he had on the field. ScElliot proved that you could win effectively with Stout....
