(I bet some of you would have called to fire Coach Ford in a few of those games we did not win by 20 points or more.)

So you're saying we need to hang 84 on Wake? I can live with that.

and I can tell you that coming off a disappointing 6 - 5 season in 1980, excectations entering the 81 season were not particularly commendatory (Clemson was not ranked in any of the preseason polls), so everyone (at least everyone I knew) was pretty excited with the success the team achieved. The margin of victory was hardly an afterthought.

Yup. I think I remeber reading about that.

Oct 28, 2014, 4:16 PM

BTW, the Tulane team of the 70's -80's weren't the Tulane teams of now. Tulane used to be a pretty respectful program.

This was before all the conference lovefest. Each team was ranked on there own merit.

The things I remember most about that game....

Oct 28, 2014, 4:33 PM [ in reply to And when I say everybody, I mean me and the few fans who ]

Dale Hatcher hitting the roof of the Super Dome with one of his punts during pre-game warm-ups.

Ironically, he only averaged about 39 yards per punt in the game which was his second worst of the season. He also had a snap sail over his head into the endzone for a safety that gave Tulane a 5 - 0 lead in the first quarter.

Clemson's defense was exceptional in that game. The defense held Tulane (who work some ugly Tar Heel blue pants) to only 50 yards of total offense and three first downs in the second half along with four interceptions and three funbles.

The crowd of Clemson fans that attended that game. There were easily in excess of 10,000 of us.

For everyone out there, in the Kentucky Game, we were losing 3-0 at half.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is a fact....

Oct 28, 2014, 5:07 PM

We were coming off a BIG 13 - 3 emotional win against the defending National Champions (Georgia) the week before, and it appeared the team had a bit of a hangover, especially on offense. I believe we had a mere 65 yards of total offense in the first half (57 rushing and just 8 passing). Thankfully, Chuck McSwain showed-up in the second half.

September 5 Wofford* Memorial Stadium • Clemson, SC W 45-10 59,313
I missed this game.

September 12 at Tulane* Louisiana Superdome • New Orleans, LA W 13-5 45,736
Was there, watched an extremely poor performance by the Tigers. Saw a LOT of CU fans on Bourbon St. Watched Dale Hatcher hit the gondola in the SuperDome with 2 punts.

September 19 #4 Georgia* Memorial Stadium • Clemson, SC W 13-3 62,466
Was there, totally electric. Had been waiting a year to get back at the UGA team we totally destroyed the year before (everywhere but on the scoreboard) yet who went on to win the National Championship. Payback time! After this game we started wondering,....?

October 3 at Kentucky* #14 Commonwealth Stadium • Lexington, KY ABC W 21-3 57,453
I missed this game.

October 10 Virginiadagger #9 Memorial Stadium • Clemson, SC W 27-0 63,064
Was there, don't recall much about it.

October 17 at Duke #6 Wallace Wade Stadium • Durham, NC W 38-10 26,000
Was there. My first time at Duke. Was impressed by the campus, totally unimpressed by the football stadium. Emotionless is the best way to describe it.

October 24 North Carolina State #4 Memorial Stadium • Clemson, SC (Textile Bowl) W 17-7 62,727
Was there, don't recall much about the game,... but we were 7-0. Really starting to think now about how special this season could be,... really focused now on the UNC game.

October 31 Wake Forest #3 Memorial Stadium • Clemson, SC W 82-24 60,383
Was there. Pretty laughable as Wake totally gave up early. Clemson couldn't help but score. The Deacon mascot started helping the Tiger do pushups. We quit passing early in the game, but kept scoring with 3rd and 4th string tailbacks. Only players that never saw the field were our 2 punters.

November 7 at #9[11] North Carolina #2 Kenan Stadium • Chapel Hill, NC ABC W 10-8 53,611
Was there. Both teams were tight as both knew if they made a mistake, the other team would capitalize on it. Dale Hatcher kicked a punt out on the 2 to make UNC's last possession have to try and go 98 yards. Jeff Bryant covered a dropped lateral late on the ensuing drive to seal the win. We're 9-0, smooth sailing now, UNC is pissed and I'm ecstatic. Loved my first visit to Orange County NC!

November 14 Maryland #2 Memorial Stadium • Clemson, SC W 21-7 63,199
Was there, don't recall much about the game,... now we're 10-0.

November 23 at South Carolina* #2 Williams-Brice Stadium • Columbia, SC ESPN W 29-13 56,971
Watched it on TV. Don't recall much other than we're now 11-0 (wow) and ranked #2. Next weekend Pitt beats Penn State, moving us to #1.

January 1 vs. #4 Nebraska* #1 Miami Orange Bowl • Miami, FL (Orange Bowl) NBC W 22-15 72,748
Was there with 7 friends. Was very hot in Miami. Nebraska folks weren't uncordial, actually were pretty nice, yet at the same time never considered a school from a basketball cnf could beat them. No respect until William Perry, William Devane, and Jeff Davis started knocking heads. Wasn't long before Nebraska started worrying. Nebraska was ranked #4, and before the game was over, both the #2 and #3 teams had been beat so whoever won the OB would be National Champions. Knowing we had a great team, but also that the stars had aligned for us to be there, Clemson saw this as an opportunity that was not going to be wasted. Did we want it more? Probably. But as one of the fans who was there, I can say that our attitude is that we WOULD NOT BE DENIED! The rest is history!

I went to Tulane game in NO and Saint game

Oct 28, 2014, 7:32 PM

The next day. Also went to UVa game. They had a TB named Vigarito who went to NFL career with Dolphins. If our D would not have showed up, Tulane had us hung out to dry. Jeff Bryant and The JUDGE were all over the field that day, thank goodness. Bryant saved the NC with the lateral recovery against the Holes. What a heads up play by #99, the most underrated Tiger great IMO.
