since they are retroactively declaring national championships from 1922-1949, Clemson may have a shot of getting another Championship!

I still have to wonder how we were 1 of only 2 undefeated teams in the country that year, and ended up ranked 11th... Maybe our schedule sucked compared to other teams or whatever, but shouldn't that at least have gotten us a top 5 ranking?

Back in those days, it was considered quite a feat for a little backwoods school like Clemson to finish ranked #11. The polls then were stacked strongly in favor of the so-called "traditional powers". It wasn't fair by any means, & it's taken quite a long time for the system to evolve toward anything remotely resembling fairness.
As for claiming a national championship, there is a reason why it was, up until fairly recently, generally referred to as "mythical". It wasn't until the 1950s that it gradually came to be accepted that the team(s) that finished ranked #1 in the wire-service polls would be labeled the national champs. But, meanwhile, any team that finished undefeated against a big-time schedule could declare itself the "national champion", such as Arkansas did in 1964. Also, it's worth noting that until 1965, the final polls came out before the bowl games. Thus, LSU would've remained the 1958 national champion even if we had beaten them in the Sugar Bowl. It seems almost quaint today, but back then the bowls were considered by the media as nothing more than glorified exhibition games & by academia as examples of crass commercialism & sports excess. Several conferences actually banned their members from participating in them.

We played a respectable schedule that year ending with a win over Missouri. As a kid I remember the team rode the train to Auburn.

UNC was ranked above us at 9-1-1. They lost the bowl game to Oklahoma, but that was after the final rankings. They were 9-0-1 at the time of the ranking. UNC played a much harder schedule that year with wins at UGA and Tennessee, with home wins against LSU and Texas. We have no similar cache wins prior to the bowl game. I have no problem with the rankings, except that they should have been redone after the bowl games. Even with my best orange colored glasses I cannot give a National Championship to Clemson for 1948 based on strength of schedule. We were also undefeated in 1900 at 6-0, but Yale was 12-0 and played a tougher schedule.

How many is Bama claiming these days? It seems to me that the number is always changing, depending upon the source. They must be up to close to 20 by now.

I could be wrong, but I feel like I heard last year's was their 16th NC. Seems like 16 NCs in 2016 was one of the storylines
