Why did all of our manufacturing go to China in the first place?

I thought it was because the cost of production was so much lower there. Has that changed?

Chiner en masse for another 30 years at least. First it was to Mexico, but before that could really take hold, most of it went to China. What was the reason for that?

Joe Biden was in politics that entire time.
Just a coincidence though.

30 years? started in the 1980's under Reagan's Trade deals

when he lifted tariffs on Chinese goods. It was mostly textile manufacturing, but eventually consumer electronics in the late 80's, and pretty much every clone PC made in the 90's passed through there in some capacity, which is when Chinese manufacturing took off.. It should also be remembered that NAFTA came out of the Reagan administration as well, he campaigned on it, but people have short memories. This conservative ethos that Reagan was he best thing to ever happen to America is utter BS. His policies set us down the path we are on now, everything from the polarization of our media to the 36 trillion hanging over our heads, to shipping our jobs overseas, it all started with his administration. To his credit, he was nto smart enough to see what was happening, just towing the line for the capital class, which have seen their net worths skyrocket since, while the rest of us have been treading water.

Companies manufacture in China because it costs less.

It costs less mainly because labor is significantly cheaper, taxes are lower, and there are fewer regulations. Whether that's because of Reagan or Alfred Hitchcock is irrelevant my point, which is that the cost of manufacturing will still be much higher here in the U.S., even if we were somehow able to get manufacturing reestablished here, nobody will be able to afford the product.
Sure companies started establishing manufacturing in China by the 80s, but it was gradual, and China didn't become a dominant force until the 2000s.

Lower cost of living. Universal health care. Very strict on crime (e.g. a habitual crook like DJT would not have survived his 20s in China). All adds up to cheaper labor. And the Chinese get to live longer too. By a year or two.

And Xi is not a crook? And while the cost of living is lower, the standard of living is lower too. And a lack of basic rights and freedoms. Then there's government intervention and control of the Chinese economy.

Xi is way smarter than Trump. His kid even got into Harvard, which just pisses off DJT even more. But no, he’s not a crook by their standards and laws.

Who don't understand the tariffs but only support them because "der Trump," don't understand that question. And they think everything can be reversed magically by a president in a matter of months.

The Dollar Yuan spread
1

The Chinese never floated their currency, which allowed them to leverage their citizens as cheap labor in order to import dollars. They used the huge trade imbalance to grow their gdp and build their cities over the last three decades.
The PRC has abused the average Chinese worker, and our companies exploited the setup to make boatloads more money.
Until their is another Bretton Woods agreement to force China to float the Yuan, we’ll never have balanced trade account with them.

We wouldn't have a balanced trade account with them if that happens either...

nor, is a balanced trade account with a developing nation of with 4.5 times the population of the US and about 5 times lower per capita GDP.
Having a trade deficit with China isn't automatically a bad thing for the US and that point applies to many countries and it's a point that hasn't been discussed enough (at all) in the context of Trump's trade war with the world.
