Bad check from a ticket purchaser. Any recourse?

So was selling 2 extra tickets. I got an inquiry from someone who sent me a check for the tickets. I waited for the check to clear my bank and even called the bank to make sure it was good. After they said it was, I sent the tickets. Now, my bank had come back and said it was a bad check. I don't have the tickets now and no money. I am very pissed at myself but wondering if there is anything Iptay can do, like reissue and cancel those QR codes, etc. Anyone know? TIA.

1. See if bank will process the check one more time to see if it clears.

2. Surely you have name and address of purchaser. Contact and demand money order for ticket amount.

3. Have a warrant Issued for fraud or writing bad check.

4. Contact IPTAY TO SEE IF THEY WILL CANCEL THE TICKETS AND REISSUE NEW ONES.

5. HIRE AN ENFORCER.

Yeah, that's the latest scam tactic according to B-Meist's Ticket Scammer Info List post. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice for you.

so not really fair to cancel, unfortunately. The person scamming was never going to use them, they probably posted for resale immediately. Reporting all info to police is about all you can do.

Sure it is. The fraudulent buyer cannot pass on good title to the second buyer even if the second buyer thinks the transaction is legit. Call Iptay and the cops.

have you contacted the buyer? It might be an honest mistake. At our business we sometimes have checks that bounce because of our safeguards with the bank.

I would check the scam list to see if your buyer is listed. You need to know who you are dealing with. I would file a police report ASAP. With police report in hand, I would contact the ticket office. You may be out of luck but, go down swinging.

If the bank cleared it initially, I would contact them. You followed safe procedure, it’s kind of on them.

They should at least honor it like a fraudulent charge on a credit card

With Venmo, PayPal and others, why would anyone accept a check as payment? Tell the guy to go to the ATM and bring cash.

To be fair, they did wait for the check to clear before sending the tickets. I would have been suspicious of someone wanting to pay me with a check, but I also would have assumed I was good to go once it cleared.

Agreed. I waited for it to clear. The. Called the bank a day or two after it cleared to confirm. They said it cleared on their end. Then they pulled the deposit back out overnight last night, which is 4 days after it posted. I will be contacting them as well but I don't want this guy scamming these tickets off on someone else. I would think IPTAY, via their Ticketmaster, could do something. They have to be in his Ticketmaster account for him to transfer. I am an idiot for being trustworthy but I did wait until the check cleared and double checked with the bank.

That would be the bank's fault. If you have the name of the person who said the check was good, the bank will gladly reimburse you. It may cost the person at the bank a reprimand though.

Hmmm. I doubt it. Unless the bank can put a hold on the funds at another bank things could change between when the clerk tells you that and when you deposit the check or it clears. The account could be emptied or money spent by the individual. Things clear instantly now.

Doesn’t work that way. Fund’s aren’t yours until it clears the other bank sometimes it’s days out a week. That’s why some banks hold funds out for days. Some give instant funds but can be taken away.

Agreed. What's the point? The major retailers scan them through now instantly and debit your account. Most hand them back to you so why have a piece of paper with your account number on it. Seems way more dangerous. Just get a debit card for store purchases. Target just stopped accepting personal checks.

Passing bad checks is a crime, not civil but criminal. Contact your local sheriff for info on arrest procedure.
Typically you send them a form letter from local sheriff giving them 30 days to make good. If they don’t they will be incarcerated. .
To all you newbies out there yes most all businesses still use checks to pay expenses. I certainly do.

One dude ran a massive scam costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. His buddy who helped him run the scam, was then scammed himself by his buddy. One guy was arrested, while the other (who collected money for the primary scammer, but lost money himself) is claiming innocence and not paying money back to those he collected from.

People suck, even lawyers who should know better.

For a bank to accept a check, it has to have a name, address and phone number on the check related to the bank account. Writing a bad check is a crime, and you can issue a warrant against the person for the amount , along with any additional fees that you may have assessed. It may take a little while, but if he ever gets a speeding ticket or any other legal matter, he’ll be flagged as under a warrant and arrested. He’ll have to pay you back to get the charges dropped

And for future reference, don’t ever take a check from anybody. If he can’t go to the bank and get out cash for whatever it is, you’re buying from me, then I don’t need to sell it to you. I was selling an old car once and the guy wanted to write me a check for 5k, and I flat out refused, even after he spent an hour testing everything on the car. He actually had to go to a nearby grocery store and purchase money orders to buy the car. I wouldn’t budge. No check, or no sale.
