How can I control my desktop with my laptop if I am on a different network. I have figured out how to do it when I am sitting in my bonus room with both computers on the same network, but if I were over at my parents house, wouldnt I need to have some sort of IP address or something?

when the computers are right beside each other ( on the same network) as wehn I go to my parents house or something? How would it know what network to connect to without the IP address or something.
Note: I am nearly computer illiterate and may be using the wrong terminology.

(source - I'm an IT guru)
But seriously, it's awesome, free, and easy.
Be careful, however, cause you'll get stuck being the tech guru for all of your older relatives...

there are a number of ways...

first, you need to figure out if you have a fixed public IP address from our service provider. There are some apps available that will send you an e-mail when your home IP address changes.
Once you know your home public IP address (outside address of your router)...you will need to decide how you want to access your home PC. Depending on your OS, you may have remote desktop available. normally, you'll need to the professional version of the windows version you have to get in via RD.
If you can't do that, look into Real VNC. It't the easiest that I know of.
The thing you'll have to solve is having your router pass the ports that VNC uses to your PC. There's plenty of info on the web on how to do that. It will depend on the capability of your router.

but these work pretty well. You would install it on the desktop pc first, then connect to it with your laptop.
