I did just read that the shooter Tailei Qi had apparently been a student at UNC for over a year. At the very least it does mean that some hitter from the PRC didn't just stroll in off the street and whack an American. It does appear that the shooter and victim knew each other.
So...probably not. I'd still be interested to know what the victim's area of expertise is and what he might have been working on. Qi was into machine learning, spectra analysis, and light matter interaction...nothing to do with biology, but certainly stuff that might interest the PRC. They systematically steal any technology that isn't nailed down...and try to pry up the nails on even the ones that are.

That is interesting - and scary. And is absolutely something the PRC might be interested in.
The PRC is very well-known for putting the screws to Chinese citizens living abroad. I can certainly see them using that method to strong-arm one of them into swiping research data, and then wiping the researcher so nobody can follow his work.
The potential of nanotech assemblers makes nuclear weapons look like a child's cap gun. Something key in that field, the Chinese - or anybody aware of their potential - would absolutely kill for.

of students from China we allow to be educated in the STEM fields in the USA. Let's be honest - there ain't a Chinese citizen in a US University that isn't first approved for attendance by the CCP. That's not saying they are all spies but at a minimum we sure are educating a lot of future "international competitors" from one of the most tyrannical governments in the world.
