Volvo - 800 layoffs at three US facilities

Thank you Donald.

Volvo Group plans to lay off as many as 800 workers at three U.S. facilities over the next three months due to market uncertainty and demand concerns in the face of President Donald Trump's tariffs, a spokesperson said on Friday.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/volvo-cut-800-us-jobs-173258988.html

Trump lives in a simple binary zero sum world. He thinks we buy goods from a country and that country sells goods to us.

He is a simple man in over his head.

I recently heard a global retailer say that they work with companies from 108 different countries. Their products are not made in one country and sold to other countries. Their raw materials, inputs, components, etc come from many countries and travel through well more than two or three countries during quite a few steps of manufacturing. Trump has put a halt to their manufacturing in many countries, including the US. The fat orange clown is bad for business.

The dude is not a Republican. He is not a conservative. He is a reality TV star wannabe dictator in over his head.

Trump didn’t help, but many are using this as cover.

Inflation and stubbornly high rates are the main reason. At some point no one else wants a $70k Mustang or $40k Civic.

Yes, the auto industry has been a mess before tariffs.

But you are 100% wrong when you say it is Inflation and stubbornly high rates.

The Chinese are making better cars and they’re making them at a lower price. We do have to consider that that lower price enjoy some direct and indirect subsidies and PRC, But US car manufactures MUST make better cars, Regardless of where they are made.

If you’ve driven any EV, or more importantly if you’ve owned an EV, you know that EVs are better products than gas guzzlers.

Trump tariffs will indeed help US auto industry - but ~2 yrs B4 we see benefits

Already, the Trump tariffs (details of which are rapidly changing as the various automobile components are being discussed) have shown that automobile manufacturing in America will burgeoning.

Major global automobile manufacturers are making big capital expenditures in America. Some of these are from previously planned investments to be in countries other than the USA; some are for expanding operations at existing American car manufacturing facilities; and some are brand new investments for brand new facilities. Overall, these investments represent a vast sum of new investment in American automobile manufacturing.

These investments will, of course, not result in immediate new automobile production. Therefore, neither will a jobs bonanza happen. The job growth will start being seen in ~2 years; worker training programs for new employees will precede the commencement of new vehicle manufacturing.

To those who suggest that these foreign automobile manufacturers’ Capital investments will be easily redirected to Mexico, Canada, the EU, Japan, and P.R.China, they forget the biggest factor. The entire world knows that the US consumer market is ShangriLa for automobile buyers. The global automakers all know that, even after the Uniparty uh ‘gets rid of him,’ there will be future administrations that will love the political benefit of having millions of high paying new jobs show up during their administrations. The foreign car manufacturers understand this; for the sake of their own businesses they will follow through on their planned capital investments in America.

Container shipping has been hitting record profits.

Pre-COVID we could do a container from LA to Maui for $1,800. Post-COVID that same container is almost $6,000.

That industry could be humbled a little.

I don’t know if the market is gonna go up or down. Nobody knows.

I just don’t see any upside.

PE ratios are still significantly higher than historical average.

Investors, business owners, banks, lenders, borrowers, everyone sees extraordinary uncertainty at the moment.

But the historically bizarre thing is the uncertainty has been delivered by an individual who has made it clear he can deliver massive amounts of uncertainty with or without warning next week next month next year, who knows.

I think folks might be more comfortable with uncertainty if there was some logic or a plan associated with it. So far what we have seen is the logic of a fifth grader ……. you hit me and I will hit you harder.

I’m not the only investor that is saying no thanks. Lots of other places to invest.

Dear JJTiger89, Tropical, LesterWagner1990, SolidOrange89, and those other TDSers on this thread who I’ve forgotten.

FYI, the Biden Handlers Admin … Inflation Reduction Act, anyone? … granted several hundred millions to Volvo to convert three of their traditional diesel truck operations in the USA over to EV trucks.

The subsidies are going away. Volvo took the fools bait, and the American taxpayers paid for the fools bait. Without the subsidies, the other aspects of those costs (using Volvo’s own capital) do not justify pouring more of their own money down the EV rabbit hole.

Trump’s tariffs have nothing to do with this. Volvo isn’t willing to admit that their EV ‘business model’ for trucks wasn’t viable without subsidies from the US government.

OK, pardon the interruption. Time to get back to keying Teslas.

It will take ~2 years before the foreign auto makers’ new cap ex in America starts creating American jobs. That is the nature of how it works; got to build the place of employment before the employees get hired.

As for the trajectory of the Trump tariffs, they are entering the stage where the little details (and there are many many many little details … we’ll stick to the automotive assembly aspects of the tariffs at this time) are taking place with those (many) countries that have hurriedly agreed to engage in detailed tariff negotiations with America.

Trump and everyone else knows that the highly complex supply chain in the auto industry makes tariff negotiations on parts and sub-assemblies very complicated.

However, even at this very very early stage in the tariff negotiations, there have been hundreds of billions of new cap ex (to be deployed in the USA) that has been committed by the foreign automobile manufacturers.

This is already a ‘win’ in the Trump tariffs column.

Instead of subsidizing electric vehicles, fuel cells, H2, R&D and new technologies, Trump is going to continue subsidizing coal and the oil industry and it sounds like you’re dumb enough to agree that we should continue with subsidies that were first implemented in the 1910s. 😂
