What computer to buy?

Feb 16, 2014, 10:24 AM

Laptop with Windows 8 and fall back on my comfortability with the Windows system?

Macbook?

Chromebook?

As long as I can run Office and Photoshop efficiently, I'm not picky about much else. But I have a son who will be learning on this laptop, so I don't know what's all the rage for the chitlens.

P.S. looking for a big harddrive (heh) for all that succulent pr00000000000n.

P.S.S. soccerkrzy - I expect a full, opinionated report laced with LBODs. Or just the LBOD's would be fine.

UPDATE: Had many folks suggest I steer away from Windows 8. The two most technologically advanced people I know objected to that view. I went with the minority and picked up a sweet little Samsung with a touchscreen and Windows 8.

Granted I've only had it for two days, but I'm glad I made the choice that I did. Considering its ease of use, it seems many of the complaints about Windows 8 are either nit-picky or coming from the same people who also hate Nike and Walmart.

you are throwing money out the window on a Macbook. Pretty much everything these day will run office, you will want something with an Nvidia GPU and as large a screen as you are willing to lug around if you want a good Photoshop experience.

Well, if you want full photoshop than chromebook is out

You can use the online photoshop express, but it's really a rather bare bones photo editor and not nearly as robust.

We recently did a bunch of laptop shopping for my wife and I. I went with the samsung book 8, and she ended up with the asus in the same class. Both can be founs for around 700 online if you hunt for bargains and I've had no complaints about either.

The asus isn't quite as 'nice' feeling. A bit more plastic and a bit bulkier feeling, but with a slightly better graphics card. The samsung has been a powerhouse so far. It's really the first time I've moved to a laptio as my primary computer and thus far it is flying through everything. I like being able to up the ram to 16GB and with dedicated graphics card I'v had no problems at all running my fairly intensive Peremier pro setup.

I can't speak to gaming with them, though my wife plays a few online games and can do so at their highest graphics setting for what thats worth.

I've had (and have) a few macs around, and in general like them. But I just couldn't pay the premium for what I was looking to do.

If you go with Windows 8.1, you'll need new Office

My wife just got a new Lenovo for Christmas

so far, so good. Windows 8 with the touchscreen (which supposedly makes it easier).

Lenovo bought out IBM's laptop division about 15 years ago, if for no other reason than to have the ThinkPad and IdeaPad nameplates. They're a Chinese outfit, but I've not read anything horrible about them lately. And you can get it at the Buy More with Nerd Herd protection, so I guess that's a plus.

I've not had a chance to play on the wife's computer (her touch pad and lappy, yes. Laptop, no. :D)) but she's not complaining about it.

When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!

I went with a Dell. It has Windows 8 and touchscreen.

I actually like it. I wanted to go with Apple, but after consulting with my tech support for the main business purposes I use it for, I decided against the Apple. Love their technology, but I need compatibility with my revenue producing activities, and it didn't make sense for me to make it harder than it has to be.

Windows 8 has a lot of compatibility and aesthetic issues.

Feb 18, 2014, 9:32 AM

Some people don't like change. Some people like what works. I'm one of those people. If it ain't broke... And Windows 8 took what wasn't broken and fixed it till it was. It's not a complete mess, but the "mobile experience" of the home screen on a PC is just not feasible for most people, especially if you don't have a touch screen. Mouse gestures are more inaccurate and awkward.

Overall, the system underneath is similar to Windows 7 (until 8.1 ruined a lot of that) but aesthetically, Win 7 is a better looking and easier to use operating system for anyone who's ever used a computer before. If you haven't, or only ever/mostly used a tablet/phone, then Windows 8 will probably appeal to you more.

Since you've already bought the Laptop, how's it working for you?
