Yes and yes please. Also, I've heard the architecture is amazing, so any input there, as well.

I got you!
- Portillos. Their Italian Beef sandwich is amazing! Hot Dogs are great too! I'm partial to the location at 100 W Ontario St. It's across from a huge McDonalds and a Hard Rock Cafe. www.portillos.com
- Wrigleyville - Head up to where the Cubs play. The neighborhood is great and packed with sports bars and retail. If the cubs are playing, the streets will be buzzing. Stop in for a brew at Full Shilling Pub (home of the Chicago Clemson Club). fullshillingpub.com
- The Gallery at Restoration Hardware (RH). This masterpiece is 6 floors, 70,000sq ft and is simply beautiful. You can have eat and drink here too. I surprised my now wife 7 years ago with dinner one time and she still talks about years later. (https://rh.com/us/en/chicago)
- Navy Pier - Shops, Museums, restaurants and access to water boat tours. Great views of the city and Lake Michigan. (https://thelocaltourist.com/navy-pier-chicago-attractions/)
- Michigan Ave. It's kind of a spectacle to see, to just walk down a few blocks and see everything. Everything is BIG on that street. There is a Huge Under Armour Brand House that has 2 floors and a Nike Chicago which is 3-4 floor spectacle as well.

First, a few touristy things:
1 - Architecture river cruise. Well worth the time and money 2 - Chicago River Walk (there are also gangster and food walking tours) 3 - Skydeck Chicago (Willis Tower) or 4 - Chicago Observation Deck (John Hancock Center) 5 - Millennium Park and The Bean 6 - Cubs game at Wrigley Field 7 - Navy Pier 8 - Natural History Museum (save this for a rainy day) 9 - Lincoln Park Zoo 10 - The Navy Pier 11 - Shop the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue)
Dining recommendations (a few of my favorites):
1 - Wildberry Pancakes & Cafe (across from Millennium Park) 2 - The Doughnut Vault (takeout only) 3 - Ann Sather 4 - Earl's Kitchen (Lincoln Park) 5 - The Triple Crown if you like Chinese food 6 - Evette's if you like Mexican food 7 - Au Chavel (great burgers) 8 - Virtue (southern cuisine) 9 - The Capital Grille 10 - Eddie V's (seafood) 11 - The Chicago Diner 12 - Lou Mitchell's (breakfast)

Excellent List. Would add the Frank Lloyd Wright tour just outside of the downtown in Oak Park and Field Museum. The Architecture River Cruise is Numero Uno.

If you stay out of the South Side (anywhere near the L track) you will be ok. Downtown and in the high rent district will result in a robbery and not a murder.

When I lived in IL and took weekend trips to Chicago, I went all over and never felt uncomfortable. However, I wouldn't go more than a couple blocks south of the Hilton on South Michigan Ave. You'll know.

Chicago has it's share of places you really want to avoid. Like so many other places, the election of some progressive woke policies has resulted in a significant spike in crime over the last couple of years. Most of that is around Garfield Park, Fuller Park, Washington Park, Englewood and Woodlawn which is largely the south side of the city.

1. Eat at one of the downtown steakhouses like Gibson’s, Chicago Chophouse, Prime and Provision, etc. I prefer the old school Chicago Chophouse. All are expensive and sides are extra. You will also see Morton’s and Smith and Wollensky, but you see these in a lot of large cities like Charlotte and Atlanta, so I would go with a local steakhouse.
2. Try a Chicago dog. I like them, but a lot of people don’t.
3. Not a fan of Chicago deep dish pizza.
4. Field Museum of Natural History.
5. Navy Pier.

don't include Navy Pier, but it is popular.
Great Lakes is North, if you haven't looked into stays yet, N. Michigan Ave. is a great start. I've stayed and put people up at the Marriott.
Chicago's version of the Magnificent Mile.
Chicago style dogs made me like hotdogs, not something I cared much for before Chitown.
As for the architecture, Chicago like Philadelphia is very Catholic. The Cathedrals are pretty amazing.
If you want to get away from mainstream a bit, Clarke-Division area, excellent breakfast at The Original Pancake House, very nice pubs. No reason to be on Chicago Avenue in that area so stay north & south. I was River North, Ontario across the park from Erie Cafe, so not too far from the funs there.
You'll fill up three days quickly, enjoy.

I have been to many great steakhouses around the country but Chicago chophouse is still the best. Gene and georgetti is also fantastic. I love staying at The Drake. Chicago is definitely my favorite city. The food, water, and the mafia! Lunch or dinner at the top of the John Hancock building is also a treat. There is an Untouchables mob tour that was also a lot of fun. Catch a Cubs game if that’s your thing as well. Have a great time!

-If Cubs playing at home and you are a baseball fan, that is a must -The Architecture tour you can take by boat (best way to see Chicago skyline is from Lake Michigan and Chicago River -You will obviously be at Great Lakes for the graduation which is well North of city, but some great areas up that way. Winnetka has some incredible neighborhoods on Lake Michigan. -Want to save a bunch of money, take the L from either Midway or Ohara if staying downtown. Like $2.00 ticket one way versus Uber for at least $45-$50.

You have to have an Italian Beef Sandwich. I love them loaded with peppers and completely dipped in the au jus which can get a bit messy. We love Portillo's. They have since franchised outside of Chicago but a great local chain.

Tons of restaurants. If love pizza try a deep dish. I like giordanos. They have a big theatre district of into plays. Take walk towards lake michigan.Navy pier is there. Chicago gets bad rap from people who have never been. Bad area is southside. Also can go to rush avenue and they have a huge shopping district. Also can walk along the chicago river pretty cool. I live near Philadelphia and Baltimore and those cities worse than Chicago. The bad stuff is basically in one are but its a large area. Have fun.

As far as the crime rate...
2
May 3, 2023, 3:37 PM
|
|
While someone earlier in the discussion argued that Chicago was not in the top ten for violent crime, citing this report: https://www.statista.com/statistics/217685/most-dangerous-cities-in-north-america-by-crime-rate/
That is only looking at crime per capita. There are 2,352 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in Memphis, for example. That translates into 14,764 violent crimes in Memphis in 2020.
The Chicago crime rate per capita was not as high (640 per 100,000 residents) as Memphis, but being that Chi-town has a little more than four times the residents, the raw numbers still make it clear that 17,260 violent crimes took place in the same time frame. They beat Memphis by 2,500. I don't care that Chicago has more people...the issue is that they have more MURDERERS and RAPISTS and THIEVES.
So yeah, Chicago is a dangerous place, despite showing only the data that makes it appear otherwise.

All you have to do is watch the news. Does not take a rocket scientist to see they have a crime issue. Think their mayor just lost her job for that very reason. They elected another loser so nothing will change.
But stay safe and enjoy yourself.

If you like or want to try Chicago deep dish pizza, Gino's East is a good place to go.
I agree with the Portillo's recommdations.
The Field Museum is cool.
