Cost of Oil Change

For those of you who pay for an oil change, and use full synthetic oil, what is it costing these days?
Pre-Covid, I was taking my cars to a shop that charged $60.00. That shop no longer allows you to wait in their waiting area because of Covid, so I started taking them elsewhere, because dropping them off is inconvenient for me. Most other shops are charging $80-$100.

Just curious, what is best? Does brand of oil matter to you? Do you prefer a premium filter over standard?

5 quarts for 27.97 plus the price of oil filter = oil change under $40.00. Added bonus, I will have an adult beverage while oil is draining.

This isn't meant as a derogatory comment towards anyone here, but I do my own and enjoy it. I'm retired now, so the money to time ratio has slanted to other direction. I can change my oil, rotate my tires and wash my car in about an hour. As long as it's not too hot, I rather enjoy it. On the other hand, the price of motor oil it up, so even the price of a DIY oil change is up. Add to it the guys working at an lube joint are making near $20.00/hr, which is more than some Clemson grads make, depending on their major.

The last time I changed it myself, I bumped into the drain pan and spilled oil all over my garage. That's the first time that's ever happened to me. Also need to buy new jack stands before I can do another change myself. My old stands from Harbor Freight were recalled and I returned them for a refund.

I just keep a couple patio blocks lying around and use them to elevate the front wheels. Just one patio block and drive up on 'em elevates the front end enough for me to slide under there and work. Surprisingly, has worked on the last four cars I've owned.

they make 20 an hour bc for years public schools have been striped of funding for things like auto shop and academic advisor make it out like getting involved in a trade is for losers.
Now most people dont have the knowledge to be able to do it and less people are entering the field so you have to pay for the skilled labor when you can find it.
Seems like you are insinuating $20 is too high though? What do you think is a better pay rate for someone able to do a skill the majority of the country has no idea how to complete on their own.

I pay on performance so if you are good at your job you keep getting more. Leave the plug out or not put enough oil in it then you stay at the minimum if you are still employed. I feel 20 is a good wage to change oil. If you do well I have no problem giving more.

You are missing the point. Every job is paid off of performance.
When you have less people that can do the job their value goes up because of scarcity. Supply and demand.
What was considered a fair wage for them 15 - 20 years ago (adjusted for inflation) isn't fair now because there is less people competent at the job so they have a higher value and deserve to be paid more.

I’m on some sort of plan they talked me into at Toyota. I figure it came out to around 70-80 bucks. I’m just short of 50 but dang oil changes used to be like 20.00 when I got my first ride. Havoline 10W40. Had no idea the differences but my dad said that’s what I should run with on the antiquated car I was driving.

I currently own a newer Toyota so it’s peace of mind to let them look it over and handle any recalls while on site. Pop the hood and things seem a little more complex than the old 79 Cutlass and other trucks I had, but I was never around a lot of repair work growing up. Changing the oil is something I could do and may do at some point. Where I live now it’s really not an option.

Last oil change in June, bought a 5qt jug of synthetic Mobile 1 and an oil filter from Walmart for $35. Took my Camero to a combination minor repair, inspection and low volume gas station nearby which charges $30 to change it. Have done that for several years when the car needs an annual inspection, until the last two times with a 2008 Mustang. Cost for the oil change there increased $10 this time. Also do the same for a 1993 S10 pickup.

I bought Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and premium filter from Walmart today. Worked out to be $47 for seven quarts and the filter. Taking it to the local Shell service station tomorrow where I've been getting my state inspection for years. Didn't bother asking what they charge, but I'm sure it will be reasonable.

Wife has a 2017 4Runner we bought from them and the newer Toyota only required a change every 10,000 miles -- first 2 changes were free with the new vehicle -- at 30,000,I paid $115 -- in a couple hundred miles, she will hit 40,000 miles, so I don't know what cost will be ??? Was $55 with regular oil in my Tundra,a few weeks back -- I have my wife's hand-me-down Sequoia, and every scheduled maintenance,on all 3 have been done at the dealership -- would not be afraid to go cross country,in either vehicle** Full service, they check for everything, fill all fluid, rotate tires purchased from them.Best thing is,we both have slowed down and don't travel much -- the newer 4Runner gets about 5 or 6 thousand miles a year now, and I golf in my Sequoia and hunt in my Tundra ( only change oil about once a year )__________________________GO TIGERS !!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a small profit margin on tires due to competition. Shops may make $80-$110 on average on a set of tires. If you rotate your tires every 10k miles and they last 50k miles, after paying employees power and equipment that $80-$110 profit is erased.

I bought everything myself 2 weeks ago for a truck - 8 quarts of oil (mobil synthetic), mobil oil filter and new drain plug gasket and did the oii change myself and it cost $67. I use the old oil for my chainsaw lube so disposal is not an issue.

I changed the oil in my 2.4L Honda last week for $32; $25 for a 5 quart container of Mobil-1 0W-20 full synthetic oil on sale at Walmart plus $8 for a Fram synthetic oil filter. I had 3/4 quart oil left over, which I saved and will eventually use in our 3.5L Toyota since it takes 6.5 quarts.

This is something the dealers actually do cheaper. They try to sell you more while you're there but they're better on an oil change.

I do my own, 4.5 qts of Castrol 0-W-20 for typically under $30 and if on sale more like $24 and Fram tough guard filter for under $6. I can check the CV joint boots and look for any new leaks or other issues while under there. I also do my own ATF changes and rear differential.
I spent close to $90 to take three kids to the movies tonight and then another $90 for sushi for us so I save where I can.

Why is anyone not allowing people to wait due to Covid? Is the shop full of Liberals?

Good question. I never bothered to speak to the owner to get an explanation, and I haven't gone there in about a year. If they haven't changed the policy by now, there are plenty of shops that allow customers to wait.

A blend of all silicones Or siloxane, whatever you know them as. Current price says $52.88 for up to 5 quarts. A month ago I paid in the $40s, maybe a promotion. But way better than $80 or so.

Reading all these replies, has me wishing I didn't need a diesel truck. I love my diesels, but synthetic oil changes are up to $196 at the dealership. Like previous poster says they do wash it and rotate tires. Doing it yourself with filters is still $140+. Let's not even begin to talk about filling up a 38 gallon fuel tank. Lets Go Brandon!!

Had the oil changed today at the Shell service station. They charged $30 for labor, so total for supplies and labor was $77.
